Baby Products Reviews of Leachco Back 'N Belly Contoured Body Pillow, IvoryCustomer Review: UPDATE: Great Pillow So Far Summary: 5 Stars
UPDATE: This pillow is an incredible MUST-HAVE! I bought it at 19 weeks pregnant and have been sleeping soundly ever since!
It supports every part of my back, hips, belly, and legs! I had initially given it 4 stars because of the thread count, the color of the pillow case, and the length, but I absolutely believe none of that matters next to how soundly I've been sleeping!
I'm 26 weeks pregnant now and can't believe that I have to fight with myself to get out of bed at this stage in my pregnancy. And the only reason I have to get up is to use the bathroom or to go to work...NOT because of unnecessary sleeplessness!
This pillow is so comfy that I don't want to get up! It's true that I can't cuddle with my husband, but he's gotten used to it and actually LOVES it also! He cuddles up against it and absolutely loves how comfy it is. If you're thinking about it, just get it! You MUST HAVE this pillow if you're pregnant.
I'm sure you'll LOVE it.
INITIAL REVIEW:
Before I bought this pillow I was starting to have some back and hip aches. I'm 19 weeks pregnant and expect the pain to have gotten worse if I didn't do something about it soon. Once I got the pillow in the mail, I slept on it and the very next day I felt incredible relief. Needless to say, I was in a better mood at work because of this. I LOVE THIS PILLOW! I have no more pain due to poor sleeping positions because this pillow supports every part of my body. I gave it 4 stars because the pillow case feels like it's 180 count so it's not the softest (I would recommend washing it and then using a fabric softener), the cover is white and gets dirty easily, and because the pillow isn't long enough. I'm 5'4" and feel like I could use a little more length, so what I started to do is, depending on where I need the length, I'll pull on the one end so the other is shorter on one side to compensate. Either way, if you're pregnant and shopping for a pillow, consider this one your blessing from the skies. It has definitely helped me sleep better. I've only had the pillow one week, so I'll be updating my review at a later date as my pregnancy progresses and as I use it. As long as you have this pillow you'll have a good night!
Customer Review: Unfortunately, a waste of money Summary: 1 Stars
This pillow has a major design flaw, which makes me wonder if the people who designed it actually tried it out? Or maybe they just weren't too critical. In any case, lying on the pillow with your head at the top of the horseshoe draws the inner seam so taut that it digs into your shoulder and neck. The filling quickly migrates away from the areas that get the most pressure (head and knees) so you spend a lot of middle-of-the-night time trying to fluff it back up - which you can't really, since it's migrated and not just flattened. I ended up needing to use another pillow for my head, but that didn't work very well because then it was way too high. I tried to solve the seam problem by resewing the pillowcase so that there was a stretchy inset panel instead of the original seam, but that didn't help either since the pillow's seam was still there underneath. I didn't even want to attempt redoing that one, since the pillow itself is made of some kind of crappy nonwoven 'fabric' that would probably tear instead of cooperating.
In any case, you can see that I gave this pillow a lot of chances, (which I felt I needed to do since I'd had it shipped all the way to Denmark) and it still fell through. I ended up being a lot happier just having lots of regular pillows - one under my head, one behind my back, one under my belly and one between my knees. That's really what I would recommend to anyone else. Pillows can be moved around, pillow cases are MUCH easier to change (the body pillow case is HELL to change), and you can always use them afterwards. The back 'n belly pillow is really huge and not really useful for anything else. I just wish it had been useful for my pregnancy. :o(
If you are looking for a horseshoe-type body pillow, it really needs to be sewn in a straight line (like a long tube) that you then curve around yourself. That's the only way I can imagine how you'd avoid the taut seam problem at the inner curve. A friend of mine had one like that, with cords at the end to tie together so it kept the horseshoe shape, and it worked a lot better. I was still a lot happier with a bunch of regular pillows though, because the filling will inevitably migrate if it has the space to.
Customer Review: Worth the Money Summary: 5 Stars
This is my second pregnancy and after a first pregnancy without one of these I promised myself I would buy one the next time around (you'll see, the last month is rough). I am SO happy I did. I felt guilty about spending the money on it (I'm a tightwad) but it is a lifesaver! I'm 5 1/2 months pregnant and with this pillow I can actually sleep through the night or lay there and read/watch tv comfortably.
The way it surrounds you is like a little nest of pillows, exactly what you need when you're pregnant. We have a tall bed and I have to admit it's not so easy to get into or out of once you're in the middle of the pillow but you can turn over without problems allowing you to easily get into the same comfortable position you were on the opposite side, all while having back support. You can also put your regular head pillow under the top part so that your head is elevated, helping to relieve heart burn.
Cons of this pillow are pretty much what everyone else stated. It's a bit big. I have no problem with this but my husband does. We have a queen size bed and it takes up exactly (I measured) half of the bed. Which shouldn't be a problem but my husband is a bit of a bed hog and is always telling me to move over (before the pillow). When I measured and showed him that it was EXACTLY half he still would complain. I did however find a way to quiet these complaints and I'll share: I told him we could use it to help with positions during love making. He hasn't said a word since. A grunt or over exaggerated sigh when he tries to move over but that's it. In all truthfulness though you may want to consider using it for that as well as it actually does help (both with that and with your husband's complaints). Also, the cover is a pain to get back on but I read the other reviews that said 'cold water wash and don't dry' and I didn't notice any shrinking, just a pain to slide the pillow all the way through.
This pillow is worth it, please please please do something for yourself and buy one of these since it will probably be the last thing you get yourself for awhile. You can justify it the moment it surrounds you.
Customer Review: A must-have for back sleepers Summary: 4 Stars
I didn't know if it was worth investing in a body pillow, but we have a memory foam topper on our bed (I've always found it hard to sleep on my side or stomach with it since you sink in) and I've always been a back sleeper. The further along I get in my pregnancy, the more uncomfortable I am on my back. So, I caved and got this pillow. I'm SO glad I did. I definitely had some concerns based on the reviews. But here's what I've found...
Pillow case - I wouldn't call what they include with the pillow a pillow case. It's a cover and it is very rough. I didn't even bother with it (this is why I didn't give it 5 stars). I went out and bought two comfy body pillow cases and put one on each `leg' of the pillow, meeting almost at the top. It works great. They cover almost the entire pillow and even helps with the seam at your shoulder, since the two cases bunch around there.
Heat - It's a bit warm (you're completely surrounded by pillow, what do you expect?), but nothing unbearable. If I get warm, I take the comforter off of me and just use a sheet. Easy.
Size - Yes, it's big. My husband and I are in a queen size bed, and he has very broad shoulders. We make it work though. My husband even hugs on to it sometimes.
In and out of bed - Of course it's going to be a challenge to get in and out of because you're surrounded on both sides. But all you have to do is lift the side of the pillow up to get out of it (like a drawbridge). Not difficult at all.
Too small for my height - There have been some concerns that it didn't fit some ladies bodies right. I am 5'8" and it fits me great. I could see there being an issue if you're much taller than me though.
I'll admit, it did take about a week to get used to it, but it's the only thing that keeps me on my side and I just can't sleep without it now. I just traveled down to see my folks over a long weekend and had to surround myself with 4 pillows to try to get comfortable...didn't work. I was SO glad to come home and finally get a good night's sleep!
Customer Review: Finally rid of the pregnancy hip pain... Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this pillow when I'd reached the point of feeling crippled. This is my 1st pregnancy, and pretty much since week #12, my hips have been so ridiculously stiff during the night, I've had to wake up and flip sides every hour, on the hour. The pain was only lessened when I took Tylenol, and I did not want to keep taking it throughout my pregnancy. In the morning, I could barely walk when getting up from bed, until a half hour of moving about had passed- my hips felt like someone was pulling my legs from their very sockets in the night, slowly-- (which is, essentially, what the hormone Relaxin DOES while you're pregnant - loosens everything up to that degree). So...I bought this so that I could quit stacking roll pillows in front and in back of me while I tried to keep another giant pillow between my knees, to keep my hips level - Sleeping was becoming next to impossible with all the set-up I was doing to avoid this pain.
I IMMEDIATELY felt the benefits, once this arrived and I figured out how to position myself overnight with it - since then, I have had minimal, if ANY of the dreaded hip pain that has become such an issue for me. It was completely worth the cost, as it gave me back my good night's sleep (priceless)--despite the 2 or 3 trips to the bathroom every night, which cannot be avoided. ;)
The other "Snoogle" types of pillows would not have been as effective for me- what made this pillow better was that it supports the front AND the back of me at once - so my hips are able to stay elevated, and not even have contact with the bed. Flipping over easily is also a big benefit - no more waking up due to painstakingly readjusting the pillow, and getting frustrated. :) It's big , and takes up half our Queen bed - but for the upside, my husband is willing to deal with it - Better to be a little crowded for a few more months, than to have me in serious pain, moaning throughout the night as I was, and waking up angry b/c I'm exhausted again. :]
