Baby Products Reviews of Lamaze Play and Grow Jacques the Peacock Take Along ToyCustomer Review: Great for Newborns! Summary: 5 Stars
The Lamaze peacock was one of the first toys we were given for our son. Personally, I think he's fun to look at. Jacques the peacock made me want to run out and see what other toys Lamaze has... unfortunately, I think I've already got the best one. From the first week (and I mean, less than one week of age here), my son was enthralled by the back of Jacques. This is really a great toy for newborns to look at - the red, white, and black high contrast back is very interesting and stimulating to young babies (they can't see in color yet).
I think this toy was a life-saver when my son was less than a month old, because he would get distracted by it hanging in his crib and he would actually agree to lay in there! Recently, he hasn't been as interested in this toy, perhaps because some of his others are easier for him to hold. We'll have to wait and see whether he decides to be interested again at some point. He's 3 months now, and just learning to hold things (and shove them in his mouth) - and this is a bit large and difficult to pick up right now. The toy does have a rattle, crinkle paper, and a squeaky thing, as well as a mirror (that you really can't see yourself in) that might be interesting to older babies.
Since the toy was so interesting early on, I still think he's worth the price. But, I'd say get this one EARLY - before the baby is born - and introduce the toy right away (but remember to show the baby the back, not the front, because it will be more interesting and easier to see early on).
Customer Review: Baby's Best Friend Summary: 5 Stars
Jacques is one of Lamaze's best offerings! The peacock is light enough - and the feather panels thin enough - for little hands to grab, tug and pick up without easily dropping. The feather panels also provide several chewable surfaces for little ones who love to put everything in their mouth.
The shape of this toy also makes it easy to tuck into a car seat. While a lot of toys seem to fall out of the car seat once baby starts playing with them, the flatness of the feather panels and the flat bottom of the peacock body seem to help this toy stay in the seat. Also, the feather panels are easy for baby to reach out for an edge, grab and pull back into reach.
For these reasons, we made our peacock a "car only" toy so that our little one, who was not fond of car travel at 4 months, would have something he liked in the car. This toy was an immediate favorite even before our little one really became interested in these types of toys.
The back of the peacock feathers have different black and white panels which makes the toy interesting even when the toys happens to be upside down. The cute face and large eyes appealed to our little guy and were worthy of cues and smiles - a friend indeed. I could not be happier with this toy. Our favorite Lamaze character!
Customer Review: great little toy Summary: 5 Stars
I found myself short on the minimum for free shipping on some baby items on my (then) about-to-be-born son. This popped up as the #1 item for baby toys under $15. I could not believe there were so many positive reviews. Why would so many people be that excited by this little guy? It was colorful, and "Jacques Peacock" kind of rolls off the tongue, but c'mon.
Well, the simplest toys are often the best, and this is one of those. When Dimitri was first home, we turned it around so he could see the black and white patterns on the back. His eyes focused and it help his attention for at least 30 seconds every time (if you haven't had a newborn yet, just know this is impressive). Now that he's two months, he loves seeing it come out of the diaper bag. If I hold it up and let it "fly" he tracks it with his eyes and head. He loves the colors, the face and the crinkly noises. If I want a few minutes break, when I set it in reach he'll self-entertain -- talking, laughing, swatting at it. In fact, last night we propped it in his car seat and he played while we ate a peaceful meal. In a restaurant. So yeah, the reviews are that good for a reason.
Customer Review: Insanity Summary: 5 Stars
I've never written a review for any baby toys before, but I'm going to make an exception for Jacques. We call him Pierre the Peacock, because alliteration is more fun than consonance, but I digress.
As far as our 5-month-old is concerned, Jacques is the greatest thing that has ever existed. Our son goes absolutely insane at the mere sight of Jacques. Even a month ago, when he was not such a grabby baby, he wanted to touch all parts of Jacques simultaneously. With great intensity, he wants to stare at Jacques and never look away; he wants to squeak and scream and laugh at Jacques as loud as he can. His love for Jacques is metaphysical.
In fact, if it was possible to be a little too excited by a toy, Jacques might potentially fit that bill. Sometimes our son is overwhelmed by his excitement for Jacques. Jacques is baby cocaine.
Our only complaint is that we wish Jacques was machine-washable. He fell on the garage floor and got very dirty, and now our son spends his days in a deep, Jacques-less, existential depression. C'est la vie...
Customer Review: Interesting toy for baby Summary: 5 Stars
What I think is really great is that the peacock has very large eyes. Research shows that babies like faces and eyes and I heard that Lamaze increased the size of the eyes on their toys. I like Lamaze toys.
This peacock is brightly coloured on the front, black and white in different patterns on the back and each 'feather' has a different texture such as silky, furry or courderoy. It makes a crinkly, crunchy sound when you touch it which is interesting to my baby. It has a squeaky button too which will be better when my baby is older.
A couple of weeks ago I started holding up the peacock in front of my baby and describing the colours and textures to him (as talking and describing is good for babies) and I can spend almost 5min talking about this toy as there is so much variety! Now he can hold it himself and bring it to his mouth.
I am online now writing this review as I am about to buy one for my friend's baby.
Edit: Baby is now 8mths old and still loves Jacques. It keeps him occupied in the car really well. I definitely recommend this toy.
