Baby Products Reviews of Kushies 5 Pack Reusable Ultra Diapers for InfantsCustomer Review: really great diaper! Summary: 4 Stars
i took a risk by purchasing these as a first time mommy with little research into the cloth diapering world. i'm really pleased, overall, but we had a few trial and error issues that we worked out pretty easily...
straight out of the package:
i recommend washing these two or three times in warm water to loosen up the fabric to make it more absorbant. i washed these once before putting them on my daughter and a little bit of pee leaked out the leghole onto her outfit. after another good washing, that didn't happen again.
night time:
my daughter has been sleeping longer through the night at 4 months old (yay!), so i started using inserts in addition to these diapers. kushies makes some specifically for these diapers, but other brands might work with these too. i've also just folded one of her rectangular birdseye cloth diapers and put that inside of her kushies diaper to help with extra absorbancy. it makes them look and feel more bulky but she doesn't seem to mind, as long as she doesn't wake up swimming in the middle of the night :)
these diapers do not wick away wetness, so if your baby wakes up crying from a wet bottom, i'd look into solutions like "cottonbabies stay-dry pockets" or any other insert to help wick away moisture.
laundry:
i've been reading various cloth diapering websites and since learned that many detergents have oils/ingredients in them... these ingredients build residue on cloth diapers, making them less absorbant and contribute to other nasty issues like skin irritations and odors. previously i was using dr. bronners peppermint castile soap to wash my daughters kushies and inserts (it smells so nice!)... but after reading about residue buildup i started using charlie's soap (it's soap free; a detergent) and it helped get rid of some of that residue build up. i noticed after a couple washes that my daughter's diapers were more absorbant and felt really soft!
i like hanging the kushies outside to dry (the sunshine helps get the stains out too), but i can only do that in the summer since it rains so much where i live. like others have said, you can toss a dry towel in the dryer with the kushies to help get the moisture out of them quicker. fabric softener sheets also build up residue on the cloth diapers, and can irritate the skin.
velcro:
sometimes the velcro tabs come undone in the washer or dryer, and catch on other things. i noticed that sometimes the hooks will get lint and hairs (we have lots of pets) trapped in them, but running a toothpick along a row of the hooks helps get some of that stuff out.
messy diapers:
my daughter is exclusively breastfed, and breastfed babies tend to have runny poops that go everywhere. so far, we have not had a blowout up the back in these diapers like she used to have every morning with the disposables. if i don't use an insert, her poop sometimes ends up out the leg holes and that is not fun to clean up, so we pretty much always use an insert.
one thing that i find really helpful is the disposable/flushable cloth diaper liners. kushies makes some, and there are other brands too. the liners catch some of the solid stuff from the poop, and lets the runnier liquid stuff pass through so it absorbs into the cloth diaper. then when you change baby, you can just flush the liner and it makes laundering and changing baby SO much easier.
so far these diapers are really holding up for us! with a little bit of trial and error, we are having a positive experience with cloth diapers.
one thing i would recommend before making a big cloth diaper investment, is to do your own cloth diaper test trial. order one cloth diaper in a few different brands and see which one fits your baby the best and which one fits your lifestyle/budget. kushies are really good for us because we don't have a lot of money, but there are probably diapers out there that have less issues (even if they are slightly more money).
hope this helps!
