Kolcraft Security Entry GateA baby gate from Kolcraft is a fantastic investment for mom and dad to make. It is one of the better baby safety gates because it features an alarm. It is truly a baby safety gate, with safety emphasized, because it features a 2 stage increasing volume alarm which sounds when the gate is opened. The powerframe helps set it apart from other baby gates. It provides a solid pressure with an easy walk thru desing. I searched for a tough baby gate for our 15-month-old son. My son is a climber, active, can open doors, and is strong. He broke our other brand baby gate with surprising ease. Given my son's abilities, we needed a strong gate.
This gate seems pretty tough and my son can't climb it. It is constructed of steel and plastic. The welds look strong and neat. Each verticle bar is mounted to a horizontal square bar and is welded. The fit, paint, and finish are excellent. The hinge is metal with a plastic cover. I was concerned about the latch. It is constructed of plastic but seems sturdy; although I wish it was metal. Our 90 pound German shepard tried to knock down the gate and it didn't budge nor open. The mounts work well and the installation was simple. There is a foot lock that can be opened with your foot. The foot lock is meant to be used with the hand latch. With some practice, opening the gate with one hand and one foot is easy. It opens one way. This gate has a latch alarm. It works when the gate is left open. The alarm starts off soft and gets progressively louder. This is a nice feature to not wake your sleeping baby. If your child is a light sleeper I'd recommend not using this feature.
Overall this is a great gate. I think it's one of the best. No baby gate will last for ever. To design a gate that would be completely indestructable would be too heavy and expensive. I looked at every brand of gate and looked for design flaws. This one seemed to be the best construction and design out of all of them. We now own two. This is a great gate if your child is an escape artist or is strong. The latch seems child proof.
