Description of Kidco Y Spindle
Many homes have staircases that are not bordered by a wall. In this situation the Y Spindle aids installation of the pressure mounted gates to these types of staircases. The Y Spindle wraps around the baluster to provide a secure installation.On the Gateway (Model G11), use Y Spindles only on the hinge side of the gate. No more than 2 per gate can be used.
On the Center Gateway (Models G15 and G35), the Y Spindle can be used on either side of the gate. However, they must be used on the same side. No more than 2 per gate can be used.
NOTE: For installation of a pressure-mounted gate on a staircase with balusters on both sides, you will need to use a K10 Installation Kit.
Can be used with Kidco Pressure mount gate models G11, G15, G16 and G35.

Customer Review: The picture looks nice, but this is an awful gate to use

I have four kids, and I don't recall the brand of child gates I had with my first few as it was a while back. However, I do recall that they were all very easy to use in that they opened easily and closed behind you automatically. That's what I was looking for this time. I purchased these gates and I have to say, they're just awful. Firstly, the company ships them in their regular packaged boxes, which clearly aren't meant for shipping purposes - one of the gates was damaged right out of the box, and the rest were obviously 'lucky to be alive'. That was just the beginning though. The nice neat locking mechanism you see in the picture doesn't tell the true story. You need an act of congress to simply open and close the gate. The gate does NOT close behind you. And, in an unlocked but closed state the design is particularly atrocious because anyone walking through the gate puts enormous stress on the gate hinges which would break if I kept the gates that long. It's basically a poor design all around - you simply can't trust that the gates are properly closed, and if I can't trust that my baby is safe, then a baby safety gate becomes pointless. I am returning these pointless gates, and recommend you look elsewhere if you want peace of mind. [Update! I purchased the Dreambaby self-closing gate from Amazon. Arrived in proper shipping packaging and self-closed with a nice click each time ie peace of mind. THAT is the product I recommend!]
