Customer Review: Great for the stairs! Easy to open!
Summary: 5 Stars

After much research and a purchase of the "First Years Hands Free Gate" that DOES NOT work well for the top of the stairs, I bought this gate and have been very satisfied so far. The door opens wide with no worry about having a bar to step over like center mounted gates. Installation was fairly easy but I would HIGHLY recommend reading the installation suggestions from "snapcrackle". We used the screws that came with the package and thought they would hold up. Well, that lasted all of 10 minutes before one fell out of the wall. Solution for us was to use longer screws which actually penetrated a stud (drywall anchors wouldn't work for us). I actually purchased the gate from BabiesRus because the price was the same and Amazon didn't offer free shipping. Check around. Good purchase!

Customer Review: Wonderful Solution
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently purchased this gate to keep my 2 1/2 year old daughter safe in her bedroom. We live in an old farmhouse with steep stairs and she doesn't stay in her bed. She would climb down the stairs all the time, including in the middle of the night. So far she hasn't been able to climb over this one like she could do with the pressure mounted gate we replaced with this one. It is a little tricky to open, but that is good in my case because we don't regularly walk through it and she won't be learning how to open it herself. The installation was a snap. In fact, I am going to purchase another one for her bedroom window because it goes down to the floor. Then I won't have to worry about her falling 1 1/2 stories if she leans on the old pressure mounted gate we used last year.

Customer Review: WARNING!!! Do not buy this gate!
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this gate to use at the top of my stairs. Shortly after starting to use it, I became aware of a major problem. The gate has to be lifted up slightly in order to lift the bolt on the gate up and into the latching mechanism. The problem is that if you lift up too much on the gate (and it doesn't take a lot), the pins on the gate come right out of the hinges mounted to the wall and you're left holding onto the detached gate. Last week my 18 month old daughter went to close the gate. She lifted up too hard on the gate, lifted it out of the hinges, and my daughter and the gate fell down the stairs!!!! And this is supposed to be a SAFETY gate! I am extremely upset about this. Fortunately, my daughter was not hurt, only very scared. But she could have been hurt badly.

Customer Review: Not an Eyesore of a Gate
Summary: 4 Stars

I did follow the directions exactly and still needed a stiff drink and lots of spackling and paint after installing this gate!! However, once installed it works beautifully. What I like best about the gate is that it does not have bulky plastic parts that draw attention to the gate. It is very easy for an adult to unlatch, but a child would have difficulty figuring it out. One thing that the directions left out, was that the two main pieces of the gate will not properly line up unless you position them so that you can see a warning label on both the top and the bottom side of the gate. I thought I had a bent piece and was ready to take the gate back, until I tried several different ways of positioning them. The directions didn't tell which way to put them.

Customer Review: Sturdy But Difficult To Open
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this gate because I needed something sturdy for the two stairwells in my home. They weren't very easy to install. We needed to buy longer screws and one of the holes didn't match up so we needed to drill a hole through the steel gate. Now that they're up, I'm satisfied that I purchased a pair of VERY sturdy gates. However, I am very DISAPPOINTED in regard to how difficult this gate is to open with one hand. The mechanism to open the gate is somewhat difficult - especially when you're holding a 20 pound baby at the top of a stairwell! But, since they were too tough to install in the first place, we're keeping them up and I'll just have to work on my "opening technique while carrying a baby".
