I find this gate to be adequate to the task of blocking the top of a stairway in our house and thus preventing our toddler from taking a bad tumble. The construction is sturdy and the latch is secure yet easy to open for adults. I do wish it would close automatically. My problem is with the included mounting hardware, which is insufficient for my needs. I've had to remount this gate three times in the same doorway, each time with progressively stouter screws and stronger anchors. The mounting hardware shipped with the gate is fine if you mount it in a low-traffic area or don't have any other young children in your household. Neither of these conditions describe my situation, and the gate is in constant use, opening and closing seemingly hundreds of times per day. Invest in some toggle bolt anchors if you expect this gate to get a lot of use.Customer Review: Great gate, installation issues

The gate is great so far. I researched other reviews as well as on Consumer report and decided to try this one out. I was looking for a gate that could handle angled walls since the wall at the top of our stairwell is very oddly angled. The gate fits its purpose and is easy to manipulate while holding a child or laundry.
Our only complaint was the installation. I had read on other reviews that it was hard to install and I agree. We installed it 3 times, first with screws it came with (it stayed up 30 minutes) and second with slighty longer screws and anchors (this lasted 1 day until we swung the door open and our daughter leaned on it and pulled it right out of the wall). Finally we got long screws and made sure we hit a stud, now we are good to go!
My son loves his freedom and I love the work I am getting done while he has it.

We purchased this gate for the top of our stairs after returning the cheaply made plastic mesh version (don't even bother with those!). We mounted this gate at the top of our stairs with one side mounted to the wall and the other mounted to our wrought iron staircase. It worked wonderfully and is VERY sturdy. We purchased the optional installation kit (we needed 2) for the wrought iron stairs (which is basically a strip of wood, plastic strap, and some screws). We ended up returning the kit and purchasing the same items at a hardware store for much cheaper. I agree with the other reviews, don't waste your money on anything else. I don't see a hazard with the locking mechanism and our twin daughters eyes, like the other review listed. The children aren't opening this on their own and it's to protect them when it's closed, not open.Customer Review: New House, New Obsticles

Just moved into a new house with a very ominous looking staircase; straight down. I purchased this gate out of necessity for the safety of my 29 month old. The hard part was that I have a wall on one side and an old wrought iron railing on the other side. After reseaching my options I chose the Safeway. I did need to purchase two installation kits, but it was well worth it. I used two boards on the railing side with the tie wraps and I'm amazed at how well it holds. I used a third board (in the second kit)on the wall, evening out the surface to match the molding on the staircase. We had been in the house for about 3 weeks and I was always very nervous watching her around the stairs. Now I don't worry at all. It's very sturdy and very easy to open and close. We bought this as a replacement for a gate my 4 year old couldn't open and close- the baby (11 months) kept getting out and even fell down the stairs once. Whew, this one is so much better! It looks much nicer and feels tons sturdier than the plastic ones and is not too hard for my 4 year old to open. She's happy, we're happy, the baby is happy (unless we're on the opposite side) :) We were able to mount it on the bannister on both sides. We just put a decorative molding on one side to attach the latch to. Only complaint is the supports that hold the hinges to the wall/bannister/whatever are plastic and I'm afraid they might not hold up- our 4 year old likes to hang on the gate and swing, which hopefully will stop soon. One of the consumer pictures I saw showed a different latch than what we have, so be careful.
