We bought this gate for the top of our stairs. The first thing that we noticed is that the hardware does not allow for any baseboards, so you have to raise it above them for installation. This leaves a gap of about 6" at the bottom. The screws that came with it are not good for drywall, so if you are installing it where there is no stud, you have a safety issue. The latch is a great big bolt that slides into a slot. Not only could the bolt injure your child, but it is not a secure lock. There is a piece of plastic that comes over the tip of the bolt holding it in place and you're supposed to have to push a button to release it. All you really have to do is push that plastic with your finger (we were stunned when our 12 month old daughter opened it)and the bolt (and gate) is released. We are planning on returning this ASAP and getting a safe gate. If you are concerned about the safety of your child and not just wanting the illusion of safety, buy another gate!!Customer Review: Best gate on the market for staircases!!!!!!

I can't express just how much I love this gate! I searched high and low to find a suitable gate for the top of my staircase and after trying several gates I purchased the Safeway Gate from kidco...and couldn't be more thrilled with my decision! There are not many gates on the market designed for a wall to banister mount, I thought the only choice I had was a presure mount gate but, after my son took a spill I decided there must be something better. The Safeway gate was so easy to install! Granted, I needed to buy a installation kit so the gate would mount to the banister. But, to my delight there was no need to drill holes into the banister, it mounted securily with plastic tie straps. I could seriously put all my weight against the gate without it budging! I know some people have expressed that the gate is not easy to open but I would disagree, I can easily open it with one hand. Do yourself a favor and don't bother with other gates! After trying four other models of safety gate, I am happy to have finally found the one that works for me. I use this gate for my dogs, but it would be equally effective for a baby. It is sturdy, easy to operate, good-looking, and as unobtrusive as a gate can be.
This gate is not pressure-mounted. It needs to be screwed into the wall on both sides. However, I have learned the hard way that the pressure-mounted gates do a lot of damage to walls, they are more difficult to operate, and they are bulky. If the need for a gate is going to be relatively long-term, I now believe that it is easier to screw it in and worry about patching the wall when the time comes.
I've also learned that gates with vertical bars are more likely to be left alone because it's more difficult for pups to get a purchase on them. The ones with grids or cross-pieces encourage dogs to rattle them -- and to jump, a habit that I work hard to extinguish.

I am still in the process of putting this gate up. I live in an older farm home and unfortunately the top of the steps are not even. The pattern didn't work and I need to re-align the gate to make it work. I was surprised that when receiving the gate it had rust marks on it. I am hoping with some cleaner it will clean up. It is not bad, but it is brand new!!! Also, I had 3 of the 8 wood screws heads break off while trying to put them on with my small hand drill. I was surprised they would break off that easily!!! I went to a local hardware store and purchased new ones. Alot of the reviews were correct in saying that you need to read directions first!!! I consider myself "handy", but you really need to read the directions and look at the pictures carefully. Once I have this gate on I will probably be happy with it, but the couple problems which I have encountered are very surprising!Customer Review: Very happy with this product!

After much research into a gate for the top of our stairs, we chose this one and I'm thrilled! It looks great, doesn't have that "plastic" look that many do, it has very clean lines and blends nicely with our white banister. I was so concerned about a difficult opening mechanism as I have numerous friends who I have visited where it's virtually impossible to open the gate at the top of their stairs holding a baby. This one is so easy!!!! And simple...you really don't need to explain to anyone how to use it. It did require my husband to make a trip to the hardware store as he decided he wanted to add a piece of wood onto the sheetrock side since he didn't want to mount it directly into the sheetrock. But, in order to get something mounted very securely at the top of the stairs, you need to expect a little work. Overall I'm thrilled and recommend to others out there looking.
