Baby Products Reviews of Kidco PeaPod Plus Indoor/Outdoor Travel Bed - RedCustomer Review: Good travel bed, not as big as others would have you believe Summary: 4 Stars
We haven't traveled with it yet, but my 2yr old daughter was so excited about her new 'tent' that she wanted to try it at home as soon as we got it. Which is a good idea since I wouldn't want to be caught far from home with no where for her to sleep (she doesn't sleep in our bed with us). Here are some thoughts about the bed that others thinking about purchasing it may find useful.
* The bed has a terrible plastic/chemical smell when you first take it out, so I would air it out for at least a day before putting kids in there. I had ours up for 2 days before we used it, and we haven't even used the sleeping bag yet.
* It isn't hard to fold if you follow the directions. It helps to keep them and reference them when you are in the process of folding the bed. We have had no problems with putting it up or taking it down. It's actually quite easy.
* It isn't as big as other reviewers would have you think. We bought it to replace the pack-n-play which is getting to be a little bit small for our daughter. She is 2yrs old and fits in the peapod great, but I cant see her using this item for more than a year (two at most), which is ok since she will most likely be in a bigger bed by then anyway. By the way, those that say they get in with their kids must looove cramped spaces. I'm only 5'1" and I could only stand to be in there with her for a minute or two because it was not nearly big enough for both of us.
* As other reviewers mentioned, it gets really hot in the tent, even with only the netting flap closed. Granted, my daughter is a hot sleeper, but we keep our house at 77 degrees (it's summer) and I had her ceiling fan on high and she still woke from her nap soaked in sweat. Next time I'll try not closing any flaps and if that doesn't work, I'll try a tower fan on the floor so that it sweeps the tent once in a while.
All in all, I would recommend purchasing it from a site or store that has a great return policy (or even from Target so that you could return it to the store to save on return shipping)and try it out at home before you travel.
Customer Review: great for seasoned travellers Summary: 4 Stars
this thing is a savior. we travel a lot and while it's ok to bring the pack&play while travelling with a camper, pack&play a hassle to bring while travelling on an airplane. so we bought peapod plus in nov. we've only got to use it once so far, and it's great. it's big enough to last my baby for at least another year (he's 9mo now, average height), easy to carry, easy to fold (i figured it out after reading the instruction carefully and try a couple of times).
the other reviewers were right about the smell, i do suggest airing it for a few days before using it. and it does get a bit warm inside with all the mesh closed. i wouldn't suggest putting it on a bed though. my baby woke up one night while sleeping in it, and he tried to climb the mesh.. and the whole thing rolled. luckily we put it on the carpet, so he's ok.
the air mattress is easy enough to pump using the hand pump, it takes less than 5 minutes. but i did have troubles trying to flatten it back to the original shape because i couldn't get all the air out. so in the end i just fold it and put it in my suitcase (out of the bag).
one warning: this thing is a hassle if your baby's sleep challenged (which was the case with my son). i kept having troubles trying to put my sleeping son inside the tent without waking him up. and everytime he realised he's in the tent, he thought it's playtime. it's very annoying at 2am, so i'd suggest get your kids used to sleeping in there before traveling anywhere with it.
the mattres is not very thick, and i found the other reviewers suggestion useful, by putting the sleeping bag on top of the mattress and cover it with a sheet. i covered mine with my son's quilt though. it worked fine because my son's used to sleeping on it.
Customer Review: Great product, could be even better Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great product. My daughter (17 months) loves it, and says "tent! tent!" whenever she sees it. It's lightweight and packs down easily. My daughter slept better in her PeaPod than she did in the pack-n-play, and while she does think it is a fun play object, that doesn't seem to have made it less useful as a travel bed. She likes to pretend her stuffies are going for a "nap!" in the tent. Too cute! I had been warned by a friend that your baby could get stuck between the mattress and the sides of the tent, but this isn't possible at all-- the mattress is in a separate compartment underneath (maybe that's a problem with the other model?). We did receive one with a mattress that didn't hold air (very slow leak) and PeaPod had *fantastic* customer service, shipping a free replacement overnight, no hassles at all. Also (and this is the reason why I don't give the product 5 stars, although I would have given 4.5 if I could have) it is very easy for a toddler to get out of the tent. We ended up attaching a twist tie to one of the zippers, and then looping it through the other to form a make-shift lock-- our girl needed this to fall asleep initially, because in an unfamiliar environment, her first choice would have been to get out and find me! The only spot on the zipper where you can attach a twist-tie or safety pin is where the pull actually attaches to the zipper-- the product would definitely have been improved with the kind of zipper pull that you can attach something to the other end, or better yet, coming with some kind of snap device already attached. This is the third travel bed we've used (we used an Amby baby hammock when she was very little, and then a pack-n-play) and it is the best by far. Can't beat the weight or compactness of this product.
Customer Review: Better than other style Peapods for many reasons........ Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this Red Peapod Plus for our 3-yr old son. He is tall for his age but fits in it fine for now. The mattress is about the length of a crib mattress. Our son loves his tent so much that he sleeps in the tent, which we put on top of his twin bed every single night & every day to nap!!
PROS:
- kids love it as their own little "house"!
- dark inside for sleeping (reviews say this red style is darker than other colors, even camo)
- sleeping bag included but not attached to peapod (other models dont have this)
- user-inflatable mattress is thick and comfy for our 40 lb son (not self-inflating as other models have, but reviews say the self-inflatable is thicker)
- mattress fits snugly in a zippered area underneath actual sleeping area of peapod so no need to buy sheets for the mattress.
- lots & lots of zippers on outside to "open the windows" to let air in. All windows are 2 layers - mesh & then the red peapod material. The mesh cannot be zipped off however.
- durable
- super easy to fold up
- very light for travel - our 3 yr old can carry it.
CONS:
- mattress is only the length of a crib mattress at its longest point (regular peapods are really really small inside).
- Hot in summer inside house with A/C, even with door wide open & all "windows" open
- A little loud when child moves/changes positions
GREAT INVENTION!! My son thanks Kidco!
Customer Review: Pros and Cons Summary: 3 Stars
Pros:
-It's extremely lightweight and compact for travel. That's the whole reason we bought it.
-It's pretty cute.
-It bends so you can move it in and out of rooms easily.
-The air mattress stays inflated for a long time.
Cons:
-It's a little warm in the summer time even with a fan blowing in it. Pack and plays wouldn't be as warm because of the open top.
-It's extremely loud. My husband and I have a really hard time sleeping in the same room with it when we're traveling because it's so loud when the baby moves and I think my baby is a little bothered by the noise. I'm working on a solution to this and will post it when I find it.
-The moment my baby learned to stand this became difficult. She would stand against the sides and the tent would roll, causing her to fall on the hardwood floor and freak her out. She can now walk but still tries to stand against the sides. I found that if I put the tent up against the wall and put two huge and full boxes of baby wipes against the other side it won't roll.
Overall: I'm glad we bought it because either way you need a pack and play or this tent for traveling and the tent is A LOT more convenient because of the first pro I stated. I'm still tied though because the stable walls and open top of the pack and plays are better. We got it when the baby was 4 months old and now she is 13 months old.
