Baby Products Reviews of KidCo Safeway Gate - WhiteCustomer Review: well designed, sturdy, smooth and easy to operate Summary: 5 Stars
Please Note: I have installed a piece of plywood, to attach the latch hardware to, on the top of stair post because it is round. I have also installed a piece of plywood, to attach the hinge hardware to, on the wall because of my Base Molding situation.
During install, ensure the hardware is level and plumb, There is enough adjustment built in and it is easy with the included wrench. Spend some time installing and adjusting it properly and it operates very smoothly, and easily with one hand. You can operate it almost silently if you try to. If not, a modest but noticeable click greets you.
None of these gates are designed to support weight when open and will break off predictably to minimize damage. With the KidCo gate, this is the hinge mechanisms which can be purchased at their online store.
I love this gate. I bought two different fir$t year$ gates and returned them both after installing them (very bad hardware with first years products, the screws are cheap metal and break VERY easily. I had to use my own screws with the first years gates, and include MY screws when I returned them to target).
You will need: a drill, your own screws (why not), a level, 30 min for a simple install, 2+ for a complex install with additional custom work.
best,
dan
Customer Review: Perfect!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This gate was perfect for what we wanted!! We needed a gate that could keep a 1 yr. old out but that a 3, 5, and 6 year old could operate. Finally we found it. The KidCo Safeway Gate is easy enough for a 3 yr. old to open and close which saves me having to run across the house to let him in or out of the stairway 100 times a day. We had an Easy step gate before which is anything but "easy step." It takes a lot of force to get the latch to pop and only my 6 yr. old could do it successfully. We also had the wooden removable gates which also, only the 6 yr. old could take down and only sometimes get back in place. We put our KidCo gate up high enough where our 1 yr. old can't reach the button but low enough that she couldn't get her head under it. By the time she can reach the button and have the leverage to lift the gate out of its latch she'll be old enough to safely navigate our steep stairs. (I would say maybe an average 2 1/2 year old could open the gate.) If you are looking for a gate that is super safe and also is operable by a young child but inoperable for a toddler, the KidCo Safeway Gate is the gate for you!!!
Customer Review: The best child staircase you can buy - see below: Summary: 4 Stars
PROS:
1. Variable width gate - fits even wide staircases
2. A WIDE opening. I almost purchased the The First Years Hands Free Gate, however the gate width opening is SO SMALL. This was unacceptable to me.
3. Opening the gate requires the person to push DOWN the lever while simultaneously pulling up on the gate to unhinge it from the lock. Clever design and IMO very safe.
CONS:
1. I wish the hinge pieces and locking mechanism were metal. Even though the plastic feels very hard and durable, I use this gate at least ten times a day... that is a lot of wear and tear.
SUMMARY:
If you are looking for a stair gate for your infant/child; this is the gate to get. My main requirements were usability and safety and this fit them both perfectly. Usability meaning it had a wide opening.
On a side note, in case you cannot screw the hinge and locking mechanism into a stud, consider securing these pieces down with Liquid Nails along with the provided screws and fasteners.
Customer Review: Best on the market Summary: 5 Stars
I actually read reviews from other sources (like consumer reports and such) before I bought this gate. This is rated the top gate for the top of the stairs. My husband installed the gate with no problems, although we did use larger screws than the ones that came with it, and we made sure it was screwed into a stud. The locking mechanism isn't the most convenient (it doesn't lock automatically when swung shut), but it is secure and sturdy. My two-year-old cannot unlock this gate, but his 6-year-old cousin was able to, which is fine because a 6-year-old won't fall down the stairs! We had the problem of a gap in between the gate and the top stair just because of the location of the stud, but the gap is not large enough to crawl through or get stuck in. We also purchased the accompanying kit that connects the gate to a wooden banister, preventing damage. If you don't purchase any extra supplies (either the kidco kit or your own hardware), both ends will screw into the wall and/or banister. Overall, I think this was a great purchase. I know my son and soon-to-be-crawling daughter will not be able to get down the stairs!
Customer Review: KidCo Safeway Gate - White Summary: 4 Stars
I received the gate the next day after the order using Amazon Prime, which I was happy about.
I also got it at the best price on the internet, which I was also happy about.
HOWEVER, when we opened it, it was not fully packaged ie: wrapping missing, and the
white gate pieces had some sort of rust colored "grime" all over the pieces.
Rather than go through the hassle of returning it and possibly getting a cleaner one,
I went out and purchased some "Krud Cutter" and a hard kitchen scrub pad
and spent 1 and 1/2 hours cleaning off the pieces. I got them perfectly clean after
that work, then put up the gate. It works perfectly.
I got a great deal and great timing, but it was inferred that it was new and perfect, which
it was not. Based on principal, I should have sent it back, and received a perfect product.
But Not wanting to wait, and not even sure I'd get one any better I chose to clean it myself.
Happy with the product, it works very well and now looks very nice in our home.
