Baby Products Reviews of KidCo Configure GateCustomer Review: BEST GATE EVER MADE!! Summary: 5 Stars
This gate is the best! We have an unusal opening from our kitchen to our living room and this was the ONLY gate that would fit in the opening. We had to buy this gate and the extension for it to work. It was quite pricey, but when it's the only gate that would work we really didn't have a choice. The construction of it is SUPERB. We have a 6 1/2 months old baby but orginally bought in for our 2 dogs. It is extremely sturdy, when the dogs are the in the living room with the gate shut and they jump on it when someone is at the front door, it does not move. The total weight of the dogs are 120lbs together. It has never budged and our one dog can be quite persistant about jumping on the gate. It is more than sturdy enough for an infant or a toddler. I have gotten more complaints on this gate than I have about anything in my house, everyone says how nice it looks. I would recommend this gate to anyone that needs a gate for unusual openings and also a gate that will probably last forever. My sister-in-law as gone through at least 3 wide-opening gates in the past 4 years and has spent a lot more than we paid for this gate, it is worth every penny. It detaches from the wall in seconds, swings open either way and has a squeeze handle that a toddler could never open. Half of the adults we know can't even figure out how to open it, they end up stepping over it. It's a no-brainer to use but the squeeze handle is concealed so well that you have to know where it is to use it. It just has a terrific design and structure. I'm just glad someone invented a gate like this for unusual openings and with such SUPERB quality. Definitely a five star rating.
Customer Review: Great gate Summary: 5 Stars
We've had this gate since late 2007 when our oldest started walking. Fast forward to home# 2 and three running , half-heathen boys. The gate has stood-up to our abuse, the elements (having been outdoors since first acquired), and the dismantling and ressembly due to a move.
We've never had a problem opening or closing the gate and find the opening more than adequate. My larger friends due as well.
We did buy another Hearthgate to section off our family room from the rest of the house and yes, the mounting screws are coming out of the walls. but, I'd like to preface, that is because I didn't use drywall mounts to attach the gate to the walls. I desperately needed a gate ASAP since our new house had a narrow, metal spiral staircase with a gate which didn!t latch( yes, we immediately rectified our spiral staircase gate sitch and now have a key lock on it!).. So As soon as I got the gate home, I installed it. After almost two years of dogs nosing it, kids hanging on it, people pushing on it, the screws are finally beginning to come out of the wall. Tomorrow, I'm headed to the hardware store for some drywall mounts.
After all the gates we've been through, I still think this gate is the best. Installation for both gates was a breeze.
Customer service was great as well. I installed it while kids were napping. I had to call the company after We received the wrong extension piece( wrong gate piece in extension piece's box)
Oh, FYI: even after all these years, our original hearthgate doesn't show any signs of rust.
Customer Review: good for complicated spaces Summary: 4 Stars
PROS: It was about the only possible solution for my complicated fencing situation. It took a while to figure out how to link the segments together (the directions are somewhat sketchy on this), but once we figured it out, it went together easily. It looks pretty nice. It is unobtrusive in the space where I have placed it. It works well for keeping the baby out of unsafe places. The system cleverly fits over baseboards and chair rails.
CONS: The gate is NOT easy to open or latch, and does not close automatically, contrary to what some earlier reviewers have reported (I suspect the company has changed the design). My relatives with hand arthritis find this gate to be particularly hard to deal with, compared to other baby gates. My baby's older cousins can't open the latch either, which makes them try to climb over, and the gate is not strong enough to take that. Warning, the kit DOES NOT come with drywall anchors, only wood screws, even though most people who choose a solution of this type will be anchoring it to a wall rather than a door frame; most of you will have to purchase at least 8 drywall anchors to go with this item. And last, for some reason the vendor (Home Naturals) billed my credit card for each segment separately, causing multiple charges for the same item on the same day; although the total bill was correct, this triggered a fraud alarm from my credit card company, and the whole transaction was put on hold for several days while it got straightened out.
Customer Review: Decent gate but annoying door release and very narrow Summary: 3 Stars
Overall this appears to be a decent gate set - it easily configured to fit the area we needed to cordon off from our wee one. However I do have a few issues with the gate that are keeping me from being completely satisfied.
The biggest issue, to me, is the door release. Basically, you squeeze up on the handle and then pull the door up. It actually takes a little effort and the gate itself doesn't feel that it's truly sturdy enough for this abuse. Plus, did I mention it takes a lot of effort? It's not as well designed as several of the other gates we've used.
The second point is just how narrow this gate is. I am not a large person and while I do fit through the opening I do worry that some of my larger friends may have a harder time of it. This width of a coach class airline seat, maybe a tad less, and you have idea on the width of the opening.
Their are some good points. The gate is easy to configure. When you have it set up, it feels like it's locked into place (unlike a few other large area gates I've used). It does feel very secure. Additionally, it won't be hard to take the gate off it's wall moorings should I need to temporarily remove the gate. This is a great feature.
Overall this is an ok gate. It may be the best gate for versatile areas where traditional gates don't fit. However if you can avoid this gate and go for something else - you might be better off looking around.
Customer Review: The only gate that works on our weird staircases. Summary: 5 Stars
We have weird staircases in our house with stairway walls that don't line up and banisters that make standard gates impossible. This is the only gate that would work in sealing off our 2nd floor main living space from the stairs that lead to the foyer/finished basement below. (See my pic above) The joints allow you to customize the angle at which the gate extends from the walls. If you need to remove it completely (say, if you are having furniture delivered), you can do so by pressing on the tabs at the top of each wall mount. It's a handful, but one person can do it.
We actually have two of these gates, since the stairway up to the bedroom level has similar issues that make most hardware mounted gates impossible. In that case, we have the gate configured in a 90 degree angle, and it works equally well.
As for operation, it is easily opened with one hand (while carrying your little one) and yet secure enough that our 13-month-old has yet to figure out how to do so himself. When open, the doors stay open without swinging shut automatically, good for people who have pets and want them to be able to roam freely when the baby isn't home or is asleep in his crib. (We have two cats, one of whom can easily jump the gates, one of whom cannot.)
Of course, it's one of the most expensive hardware mounted gates sold, but well worth it in terms of flexibility and ease of use.
