Baby Products Reviews of KidCo 4 Lock Set

Customer Review: No Key!?!? Inaccurate Description
Summary: 3 Stars

This set of locks does not come with the key to unlock/lock it. The description of this item does not explain this important detail. The key is even pictured in the description. $21.95 for only 4 locks and it doesn't even come with the key.

I feel that I should update my review after using this product and dealing with Kidco's customer service. I called their customer service to complain about the key not coming with the lock set even though it is pictured in the description and the description does not explain that it does not come with a key. The representative very politely explained that the item does not come with a key and that it is sold separately. She still offered to send me the key anyway free of charge and I received it in 2 or 3 days. I figured out the problem is that it is not described adequately on Amazon. If you look at the item on Kidco's website, it clearly states that the key is sold separately. I would say that for $22 the 4 lock set should come with a key. Even if you bought a starter set (with key) who couldn't use an extra key? Especially if you use the locks in more than one room. The product is very easy to install. Make sure to follow the clearly written directions thoroughly. Put on the cabinet end of the bracket first and make sure to remove the guide tabs after you install it. They get in the way if they are left on. I chose to use the screws because I didn't want to have to go easy on the locks and worry about them falling off. Who cares about holes on the inside of the cabinet anyway? I can putty them later if I feel like it. After the installation, the locks work very well. I am raising rating to 3 stars. They would get 5 if they didn't nickel and dime us for the key. I would have paid a little extra to have a key.

Customer Review: So easy to install, versatile, long lasting
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought these magnetic locks because we didn't want to be bothered with drilling all those tiny holes for the standard bend-down latches. For that purpose, these latches are perfect - they really are THAT easy to install. Just peel & stick. And if you prefer (or need!) the extra strength, the kit comes with screws.

We bought our latches four years ago for the cabinet where we keep garbage, so it gets opened and closed many times a day. We used them constantly for about 3 years, then just left them in place (so easy - slide the little button and the latch disengages) when Kid One was old enough not to need them. Now that Kid Two is getting around, we slid the button back down and the latches are working as well as ever. They're still stuck on with only the adhesive tape - we never used the screws.

The magnetic key is quite easy to use. We kept it sitting on our metal sink, right above the cabinet where we used it. Handily enough, it will also stick right on the cabinet for times when you're right there and opening the cabinet frequently. The plastic cover of the key did eventually crack and detach from the magnet. The magnet itself still worked as a key, but was harder to use without the cover/handle.

Also, any strong magnet will open these latches, so you're not SOL if you lose yours. Which is handy because Kid One went through a phase where he thought it was fun to hide the key....

My only real gripe with these latches is that you do have to have a magnet to open them. It can be a real pain when I have a handful of messy trash to find, pick up and use the magnet in order to open the cabinet. But hey, that's childproofing, right?

Customer Review: Excellent concept with a fatal design flaw
Summary: 3 Stars

For how much I was paying for these locks, I had extremely high hopes that they would be the perfect solution to childproof a rented home.

KidCo certainly nails the concept of an adhesive magnet lock. The magnet 'key', when held up to the cabinet door, raises/lowers a hook that grabs onto a cabinet mounted latch.

There's just one problem: the latch piece essentially requires that the 'ceiling' of your cabinet is flat. If you have any sort of lip or edge to your cabinet, you will have trouble with these. I was able to get these to install perfectly, and they worked initially, but as the latch piece settled, it began to drift upwards because the entire surface area of the latch didn't have resistance. So, when I closed the cabinet door, rather than automatically latch, the hook would simply push the latch piece up and stay unlocked. Not very helpful.

Also, KidCo touts a replacement policy on their packaging that makes it seem easy to get replacements if you are not pleased with the product. Again, great concept, poor execution on their part. Their customer service reps treated me as if I was trying to con them, and wanted me to take multiple pictures and jump through various hoops in order to prove I wasn't lying about being unhappy. Very strange.

So, I applaud the idea, but the fact is that these locks WILL NOT work with everybody's cabinets. And unfortunately, I'm afraid the only way to find out is through trial and error, which isn't especially helpful given the price tag on these locks.

Customer Review: Best drawer and cabinet locks!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The only downside to these locks is the price (Amazon has the best price that I have seen) and it would be nice if these could be installed horizontally. We tried to install one horizontally and they will not work in that position. We have a newly built home and didn't want to scratch up the drawers and cabinets with external child proofing gadgets. We tried the Safety 1st magnetic locks and drilled right through one of the doors even though we followed the directions and the cabinet doors met the specifications. These work whether you're using the adhesive or the screws. I didn't think the adhesive would really work. We tried it on our pantry cabinets and it's been months and it's still holding, even with a toddler pulling and shaking it trying to open it almost daily. As we can afford it, we purchase another package or two and continue to child proof the remaining cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom. These are awesome!! Another great feature is that when you're finished needing them there's a switch on each lock that keeps it in the unlock position. That way you don't have to undo the childproofing or use the key all the time when your children are grown. You can simply unlock all of them and get into the cabinets and drawers like the child proofing isn't there. If you purchase these locks, you won't be sorry.

Customer Review: Bought some, loved 'em, bought some more!
Summary: 5 Stars

(by the way, this is David's wife, I don't know why my account is showing with his name)

My third child gets into everything! Sure, the rest of you out there can brag that you teach your child No, but my little guy is too curious and loves to frustrate me. These locks are perfect! He can't reach his fingers in, and I can install them myself!!! (which is huge since my husband has a lot on his plate right now and the other kind of locks are a pain to install)

A super nice feature is that you can put them into an unlock position when the kids are older ... I suggested these to my mom since she watches one of her grandsons three times a week. She can have them in lock position when he's there and unlock position the rest of the week.

The adhesive works really well. I had no need to use nails to reinforce. I made sure I let them set 24 hours before messing with them. While they were setting for the first 24 hours, I put them in unlock position incase my husband forgot they were there and yanked the door open.

I just put the key on the refrigerator. My 7 year old can reach it just fine while my 18-month-old cannot. This has been the perfect solution for my family!
