I only considered buying a cover that went over the top of the car seat, because I didn't want to interfere with the straps. A few reasons I like this one better than the others I have used in the past:
The zippers make in-and-out very easy since I don't have to fight with the elastic every time I put my baby in it.
It fits quite snug on my carseat, so it doesn't keep sliding off at the edges (I had that with my older Eddie Bauer one).
It keeps my baby nice and warm-- It is 2degrees below zero right now, and my baby still had warm hands and feet after riding in his seat all zipped up-- just close the face flap when we're outside and open it back up in the car. When the weather wasn't as cold in fall, I left the zippers unzipped for a bit less protection.
The one thing to be careful of if you have a car seat that snaps into a base in your car: make sure the edges of the cover don't interfere with the latches that hold the seat in-- The first time out, the seat didn't snap into place like it should and I had to readjust the cover a bit to get it right. Once I did that, it has been perfect!
