Baby Products Reviews of Itzbeen Baby Care Timer, BlueCustomer Review: There are not a lot of items you need on Day 1, but you need this Summary: 5 Stars
When I suggested to my wife that we needed this item on our baby registry, she thought I was just feeding my gadget habit, baby-style. Having been a night nurse for newborn twins and triplets for years, she thought she would never need this item. Well, this item arrived on the second day after we got home from the hospital - and my wife wishes that she had it on the first.
You see, one of the skills that really suffers with sleep deprivation is math. If you can even mentally keep track of the times or write them down, doing the "hours" math on when our baby last fed, when she had her diaper changed, etc. is really not as easy as it sounds when you've had no more than about 45 minutes of continuous sleep for four days. So this does it for you - four timers with little icons and a left/right slider for breastfeeding (which is also a tough thing to remember, but something you really don't want to forget). It is exceedingly simple - press the icon button and it restarts the timer - perfect for the sleep-deprived mind.
As for the suggestions by some reviewers that this timer needs additional features, such as feeding totals and quantity subtotals, I disagree. I think that additional features would likely take away from the simplicity of the device - making it more complicated to operate on limited brainpower and thus less likely to be used. Those with more complex needs might consider a PDA with a spreadsheet or specially designed program.
It's not often I get to hear that I was right and my wife was wrong (we're usually on the same page). This was one of those times.
Customer Review: Was defective/broken upon receipt BUT great customer service Summary: 2 Stars
My timer was defective in that LED screen for the top function (the diaper change button) was not complete...meaning you could not discern the digits (was it an 8 or 0?). Otherwise, the other functions worked and I was able to see how much time elapsed. Overall, though I stopped using the timer fairly quickly for a few reasons.
1. I had a newborn and when she was yelling/screaming crying for her bottle or permanently attached to my breast...I just forgot to press that button to start the timer over.
2. For some reason, I envisioned a product that would not only keep time between feedings, diaper changes, etc. but would also keep track of the sleep time during the day, etc. or the number of diaper changes & feedings per day. BUT it only tells how much time has elapsed from the your last feeding, changing etc. Maybe I am asking too much, but I don't see what differentiates this product from a multi-use timer. It's essentially several times on one device. Overall, it is a good but for all the raving reviews I just expected more.
I came back and edited this review because I wanted to add that they company has fabulous customer service. I emailed the company to inquire about getting a replacement for the timer. The president of the company emailed me back promptly on a Sunday asking for my address. He did not ask me to send back the defective timer and must have shipped the replacement priority or overnight because I received the replacment in no time.
Customer Review: MUST HAVE!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I was skeptical about this item, but after all the great reviews decided to purchase it. We had gone to the hospital for a "false alarm" on my due date. On our way home, I asked my husband to stop at BRU because I had decided I wanted to purchase the Itzbeen. I opened it immediately and added it to my bag for the hospital. Well, six hours later, I was using it to time my contractions for "real" labor this time. What a sanity saver the Itzbeen was. No charting times or having to calculate how long it had been (& yes, even simple math becomes difficult when you're in labor pain or sleep deprived). Besides contractions, I used it to keep track of when I last took meds post-labor and when the baby was last fed. It made communicating simple when family members wanted to know when the baby needed to nurse again. My DD is a year old now and we recently found ourselves pulling this out to keep track of when we gave her pain meds for an ear infection. I can see us using this for many years to come for the same purposes. My husband is not an "exact" sort of person, so this makes communicating the exact time medicine was administered much easier b/c he doesn't have to remember anything or write anything down - just push a button! The alarm function was great too! I wish I'd figured that function out sooner so that I wouldn't have to keep checking the Itzbeen to see if it had been 3 hrs yet since the baby was last fed. Set the timer and no more worries!
Customer Review: Best baby product on the market! Summary: 5 Stars
The Itzbeen has kept me sane since my little boy was born in October. I LOVE IT! I use it to keep track of the last diaper change, last feeding, and which side I last fed on. I have used the wildcard timer once to keep track of when to give my little guy breathing treatments (thanks to a really bad cold!). I agree with some of the other reviewers that it's not that necessary for diaper changes. If a baby is dirty, change him. But I still like to use it for that. It's just nice to know when the last time I did it or my husband did it. Mostly the Itzbeen is great for keeping track of feedings! Before I had my little guy I could tell you that there were 3 hours between 9am and 12pm. But once my little guy arrived and I was sleep deprived (still am) I had no idea how to tell time or know how long it had been since the last time I fed him. The Itzbeen is also great because my husband can look at it and tell if the baby is crying because he is hungry or just because he wants to. The alarm on the timer is great too. In the first month or so after birth the baby needed to eat every 3 hours even if he was asleep. I would set the timer so I wouldn't sleep through a feeding if the baby didn't wake up (didn't happen often but did on occasion). I have recommended this item to several friends and they have all fallen in love with it. I would highly recommend it to any first time moms and any mom who is breastfeeding. This is a great product.
Customer Review: My friends call this my baby's blackberry ... Summary: 4 Stars
because it never leaves my baby's side! I'm a first time mom and this is a must-have for all parents. It helps you time and monitor your baby's feedings and diaper changes. (those are the only 2 timers i use on this). This is a must have for you hospital bag, too! Also, the night light feature is great for those middle of the night feedings. You don't have to turn the light on to help your baby latch back on if they mistakenly unlatch.
My husband first thought this was a waste of money, but he is a believer. He even tells his expecting friends this is the best invention because there is no way your going to remember what time you last fed or changed your baby, especially at night when your barely awake.
Now that my daughter is 2 months old, I'm still using it, but now to understand her eating and sleeping patterns. I'm trying to get her to sleep through the night. I'm using the techniques in No Cry Sleep Solution.
I only gave this 4 stars for 2 reasons:
1. I wish the timer could be set in 15 min intervals, rather than 30 min intervals. When your breastfeeding, your most likely doing 15 mins on each breast.
2. I wish the belt clip was more sturdy and secure. When I'm walking around in NYC, I wish I could clip it onto my diaper bag. Instead it ends up getting burried in my diaper bag and I need to fish it out whenever I want to see what time it is.
