Baby Products Reviews of Itzbeen Baby Care Timer, BlueCustomer Review: Pen and Paper vs. Itzbeen Baby Care Timer. Pen and Paper wins! Here's why... Summary: 2 Stars
Here's all the timer simply does: There are 4 buttons (diaper, feed, sleep and multipurpose). When you do the activity, hit the button and it starts timing upwards so that you can tell how long "itzbeen" since the last time you did each activity. There is a separate timer readout for each activity. Hitting the button when you do the activity resets the timer back to zero.
But you will still need to record history! It will help monitor trends (at least in the beginning anyways)! It will help you notice patterns and spot things out of the norm.
Feedings:
You will need to track history and record how many feedings (and also how long they breast fed or how much they bottle fed). Then you can tell how much your baby is eating and average how far apart. Helpful to spot cluster feeds.
Diapers:
You will need to record if its a wet diaper or dirty or both. The timer just records how long its been between a diaper change and not a difference with pee or poo. (I guess you could use the multipurpose button for poo).
Sleeping:
Truthfully we didn't use this timer that much. The baby usually ate, diaper changed, and then slept. We didn't bother recording this and woke him up regardless (if he was sleeping) according to feeding schedule.
Other features:
Clock - just about the only feature we use.
Night light - too small to really do anything.
Breast tracking - a toggle switch to track which breast you last fed. Somewhat useful. But not used anymore (after 2 months).
I might use this later on when the baby is possibly older and just monitor the last times of each activity. But seeing its my first kid, I will probably track stuff on paper for awhile.
Overall, you're better off with pen, paper and a clock. Buy yourself a nice clock instead.
Customer Review: Easy to use, even for non-gadget people, and very helpful! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not a big fan of gadgets. So I was skeptical when my husband bought the Itzbeen before our 1st baby arrived. But now I'm a convert. This handy, easy-to-use device has made our lives so much easier, especially during the crazy, sleep-deprived months right after the baby was born.
Even now, five months in, I keep the Itzbeen with me all day. (It's small and light enough to go into a purse or diaper bag, and there's a nice belt clip on the back.) At night, it stays on my bedside table. (The mini built-in flashlight is great when you're getting up in the dark!)
The genius of the Itzbeen is that, in a single glance, you can tell exactly how long it's been since the last feeding, diaper change, and nap. (We use the fourth button to time the interval between pumping, but you can use it for whatever you want.) If you're handing the baby off to your partner -- or grandparent or babysitter -- you don't have to give him a complicated verbal update of exactly what's happened when; you just hand him the Itzbeen, and all the info is right there.
It's easy to program and use... just one touch of the buttons, and you can set a time period for an alert. The flashing lights (and audio alert, which can be muted) make it simple to remember when a baby task needs to be done. I also love the little back-and-forth switch to help remember which breast was latched onto most recently. The batteries last pretty well--also a big plus.
Finally, I love the price of the Itzbeen. It's cheap enough that it wouldn't be the end of the world if I lost it or broke it somehow.
So don't be intimidated, gadget-phobes! The Itzbeen is easy to use, and it will DEFINITELY help you keep track of all your baby-care duties.
Customer Review: We LOVE this timer! Summary: 5 Stars
We have two older children. I remember how absent minded I was after each of them were born. I couldn't remember anything for months! So, with number three (born 10/9/08) I wanted this timer. We LOVE it! With the first two children I couldn't remember which breast I had last fed on, when they ate, when they were last changed or when I took my medications. We had lists for everything. Not with our third child! I purchased the timer and took it to the hospital with me. We starting using it from day one, within hours of our daughter's birth.
I used the last optional timer (not assigned to anything specific, has a star on the button) for timing pain medication after my c-section. I used the sleep timer for my Ibuprofen timer. I didn't need to know how long my newborn had slept, but more importantly when she fed and when she was last changed (so we could count diapers to know she was getting enough to eat). I love the alarm! You can turn it on or off for each button, as needed. It has a clip to attach it to yourself or your diaper bag. When your hands are full, it's very helpful. Finally, there's the little flash light. It's not really bright but I've been able to use it to accomplish whatever task I'm trying to do in the dark. Someone put a lot of thought into this product. I don't think it's missing anything! Twenty days later, we're still using it. A little differently, but we're using it. Now that I'm feeling better physically and busy again with normal life activities, I'm still very absent minded and use it to stay on track and keeping our baby on a schedule. Itzbeen timer is a must for everyone having a new baby!
Customer Review: Must have - they should issue these in hospitals when you give birth Summary: 5 Stars
This timer system is beyond helpful - it becomes your BRAIN when you have a newborn, as the hours, feedings and diaper changes become a total blur during this amazing yet totally sleep deprived time of your life. While it would be nice to have a few more features like total ounces drank, whether the diaper was a wet one or a doodie, and tracking of daily totals for everything - that'd be more of a infantcare PDA, and is a bit beyond the scope of this little device. All it aims to be is a timer that will keep track of the key stats in your baby's life, consequently making your life way easier. I wake up in middle of the night and the baby is grunting, for example. I click the backlight button and see that in fact the baby has only been asleep for an hour, and had a diaper and bottle right before that. Then I just go back to sleep. On the other hand, he beguns grunting and making noises and I see the Itzbeen says it's been 2 hours 30 minutes since his last bottle or diaper, and I know it's time to get up and feed him.
It's also great for team caregiving, as my husband can hand me the Itzbeen after doing his morning shift, and I automatically know when the last change and bottle were. We use the wildcard button to track bottle expirations too.
Thumbs up for the developers of this cool gadget - I hope to see an "Itzbeen II" w/ some advanced features in time for my next baby - although keeping it simple does help keep it easy and quick to use, especially in the fog of a 1am, 3am, and 5am feeding schedule! (my son never got the memo that full term babies are only supposed to eat every 3 or 4 hours :)
Customer Review: The most important tool for a New Mom! Summary: 5 Stars
Coast Innovations Itzbeen Baby Care Timer
My husband thought I was getting carried away when I first ordered my "Itzbeen". Now, after a year this month, I've gotten so dependent on it I couldn't imagine trying to remember all the things my Itzbeen allowed me to keep track of with just a glance. I use the * button as a "how long he's been awake" just like the Zzz button is "how long he's been asleep". And now, my husband uses it, and really appreciates being able to keep track of what needs to be done by a simple handoff of the Itzbeen (if I for example, run an errand while the baby is sleeping).
The lock on the side is a blessing, as I've used this timer all day, everyday for 11 1/2 months now, and the feeding button has become a little sensitive (but still works fine with the lock switch so I don't accidentally hit it and reset the timer), and the lock is also great because my son loves to play with it and loves when I light up the soft blue glow of the dials. Having a lock function lets me feel free to allow him to play with it with no worries.
The soft lights (face glows blue & soft white light on top) are very handy at night and not too bright as to wake the baby. Also, the L/R breastfeeding reminder is an excellent addition to an already wonderful tool. Although I stopped using it after we "got the hang of things", it was very helpful during the first month or so.
Overall, I LOVE this product, and am happy (and appreciate) I purchased it every single day for the past year!
