Baby Products Reviews of Itzbeen Baby Care Timer, BlueCustomer Review: SO HELPFUL... Summary: 5 Stars
Especially if you're a first time mommy/couple. This product really helped my husband and me keep track of our little guy's feedings. Even though I only use the diaper change and feeding timers I still think it saves us from a lot of headaches. I didn't breastfeed so my husband and I took turns with our son's nightly "meals". Instead of waking each other up to ask when he was last fed or changed we would just check the Itzbeen. The Itzbeen was especially useful when we first got home from the hospital because we were so exhausted from lack of sleep. Who has the brain power to remember to check the time or keep a written record when you're that out of it? I know we sure didn't! Instead we just push the buttons to reset the timers. So simple! I think if we didn't have the Itzbeen our baby might've been overfed or we would've fully woken him up unnecessarily just because he cried out at night. That means cranky baby and cranky parents. There have been plenty of times when he has woken up because he has broken free from his swaddle and that makes him fuss and wakes him up slightly. All he needed was to be re-swaddled and he'd be out like a light. Instead of mindlessly feeding him everytime he cried out in the middle of the night I check the Itzbeen to see if it is around the time to feed him and if it is way too early for him to have woken up from hunger I know it's something else he needs.
The Itzbeen is pretty small so it fits nicely in the pocket of my "mommy uniform" (my robe and sleeping attire), and also the diaper bag. It even has a little light that I use when I change him at night instead of turning the overhead light on and that light is too bright for the baby and me at 3am.
I think the Itzbeen was really helpful for the GP's or anybody else watching him who would assume that everytime he cried meant automatically putting a bottle in his mouth and that makes him gassy and all around miserable. We learned that the hard way when we didn't give the Itzbeen to his GP's when he stayed with them for the weekend.
One thing that would make this product better is if could keep a record of the times it's been reset so you can keep track of his feeding habits.
Customer Review: Much used Summary: 4 Stars
This came in very handy when our baby was new. It made it easier to remember how long he had been sleeping, when the last bottle was, etc. We also used it to remember how long it had been since we gave him medication, and while he was in the hospital to see how long it had been since he had been checked and things like that.
My one complaint would be that it doesn't have more than the last time stored, however, if you have it only to time one thing, see my comment below.
Also, the time reverts to zero after 24 hours, so don't try to time anything lengthy.
I have started to use it a lot for breast pumping, and work my way down from the top button to see a running log of when I have last pumped. Then besides seeing that it's been four hours, I can see that the time before that was five hours, for example.
The backlight is nice for dark rooms, and the flashlight in the top has come in handy. The nursing button is just a sliding tab, which I didn't find handy, since my lactation consultants said to nurse from both breasts so they don't get different sizes (and I'd pump afterwards anyway).
The alarm function was used a couple times, but can only be set in half-hour increments, so it wasn't always that useable for what we were using it for.
Keep the instructions for clock setting, because if you don't remember how to, weird things happen when you press multiple buttons at once (resetting a different button's time, resetting all buttons, alarm setting...).
A good investment, but the reason that we still use it is for something slightly different than what it was originally intended for. Very handy for the first few weeks. After that, the baby wakes himself up when he's hungry, hopefully he's not in the hospital, the diaper gets changed when you pinch the front and it's squishy, and you've figured out your own code for what side you nursed from last. Really great though, once again, for a running timer of one thing, when you don't need it to get through the first few days/weeks. My husband loved it. It made him feel more in control with a new baby.
Customer Review: Saves Brain Cells! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this just before our baby arrived, and honestly wasn't sure if we'd find it useful or just another gadget that ends up in the goodwill box. Our baby was delivered a week before the timer. At first, I thought "Now, how hard is it to remember: feed every 3hrs, change diaper, pump every 4hrs, etc." After a couple days, ohmygosh, schedule anarchy! As soon as we'd finish a bottle, we'd think: "Okay, feed her again at 5:00 don't forget." A couple hours later (after a diaper change, pumping, washing bottles, etc.) it's: "What time did we feed her? Do we go again at 4:00 or 5:00?" We always seemed to struggle within a one-hour range. With a preemie, it is important for us to wake her for a feeding if she doesn't wake on her own.
Then, the ItzBeen arrived. Three AAA batteries later, it answered all our questions and my husb and I don't have to play the clock guessing game with each other anymore. ItzBeen couldn't be any easier to use. Simply press the button with the PICTURE of what you just did: Diaper, Bottle, Nap, or Wildcard. (I use my wildcard to keep track of the last time I pumped.) The button will even LIGHT RED for a second to assure you ACTUALLY pressed it.
It has a backlight feature for nighttime use. You can set alarms for each timer in case you want the ItzBeen to alert you when you've lost track of something. When alarming, the overdue icon button will BLINK RED and there is an option to hear the alarm too. If you're breastfeeding, ItzBeen has a slider to help you keep track of right/left. There is also a handy lockout feature so you can lock the device to prevent anyone (young children?) from accidentally resetting your timers.
Actually a cool little device!! Especially helpful when you're handing off baby between parents, grandparents, or caregivers. It takes about 2 minutes to learn how to use, while taking A LOAD off your mind.
[This would make a great shower or new baby gift. Especially for a new parent or for twins/multiples]
Customer Review: Don't wake up to a screaming newborn. Summary: 5 Stars
My wife was quite sceptical about this purchase initially. She thought it was just another toy for Dad. But now that we've finished our first week with the little guy, we absolutely LOVE this device. It would easily be in any top 5 list of items that we could not live without.
The item is actually much smaller in person that I thought when I ordered it. It's about the size of a clamshell-style cell phone and it's really made well. It's been dropped and had water droplets, etc and hasn't had one issue. The extra "misc" button is great for the breast pump.
Each individual button has it's own timer, so we can set it to alarm after 2.5 or 3 hours for feeding. This may not sound like the cat's meow, but this means that we are proactively able to feed him. The other method is letting him wake up screaming because he's starving. We're all much happier without that.
I highly recommend purchasing this product.
- Update at 12 weeks old: Unlike some other reviewers, we still use this product constantly after 12 weeks, although we're only using it for the feeding and breast pump items and no longer use the alarm feature.
At this point, it's very helpful for timing outings. Say you want to go out to dinner, it's very nice to glance at the timer and know 'kiddo will want to eat in 45 minutes and the Mrs. will need to pump again in 4 hours' so that you can adjust when you leave to fit that schedule.
Another aspect that is still helpful is using one of the buttons to time medicine so that we keep up with the tylenol on those feverish days. One other item of note; the original batteries that I used are still going strong, even with frequent uses of the built-in flashlight (when he decides to spit his pacifier under the couch at 2 AM).
Considering that I gave it 5 stars when thinking I'd only use it a month, it's solidly earning those 5 stars.
Customer Review: LOVED this product---until it broke! Summary: 4 Stars
When I found this gadget in the store when I was pregnant with my fourth baby, I thought "I've made it through 3 other babies without this, why would I need it now?" But I loved, loved this thing! It was so great for keeping track of my daughter's diapers, feedings, etc. Actually, with 3 other children to worry about (and all their schedules), it was nice to not have to keep track of ONE MORE THING. It was great! I could let my mind relax and not have to be "on" when it came to remembering everything. Great for groggy, middle of the night feedings. Some nights I would have no idea how long she ate for or how long it had been since she last ate. All I had to remember to do was push a button. It was also so handy to slip into the diaper bag or purse. If she was fussy I could easily look at the Itzbeen and see what could be her problem (how long since she ate? how long since her diaper was changed?)
Also, the flashlight feature is worth all the cost of the product. I LOVED it the most! I sleep with my babies, either in my bed or in a bassinet by my bed, when they are newborns. For middle of the night diaper changes and feedings the flashlight was wonderful! Just enough light to see, not so much to wake up my husband or the baby too much, easy on my eyes. And then, when you're all tucked back in and can't move b/c you're nursing, you look over and see the flashlight still on! No worries--it goes off by itself in a few minutes!! LOVED that!!
So, my love affair with this product continuted for about one year and then it broke! We decided not to replace it, but would have if she were any younger. I don't know why it broke. It just didn't turn on one day. We replaced the batteries, that didn't help. If I had another baby, however, I would buy another one!
Get this! You won't regret it and your brain will thank you!
