Baby Products Reviews of Inclined to Sleep

Customer Review: For the Price, OK, but of Limited Usefulness w/ Torticollis
Summary: 3 Stars

Our son developed positional plagiocephaly early as a result of a birth injury that limited his neck flexibility and resulted in thickening of his neck muscles on one side (torticollis), causing him to prefer to sleep exclusively on one side. This positioner was recommmended as part of an overall sleep positioning strategy to keep the plagiocephaly from progressing. It did not work well in our case, as our son's torticollis "beat" the positioner, as his tendency to pull to one side was strong enough that the positioner didn't force him to sleep in the "right" way.

But that's not to say this couldn't be useful for parents who have a normal sleeper to begin with and want to use it as a preventative measure to assure a variety of (correct back-sleeping) sleep positions. Initially, it worked in getting him to assume the correct position during his deep sleep phase, and with a baby with normal neck muscles our guess is it would do the job just as advertised. He also seemed to sleep better on the incline, so we continued to use it while he was in the window. For the modest price, it's worth an experimental try, and the basic design is decent and relatively easy to use.

As noted in other reviews, it is hard to clean, but we found using the rough side of a dish scrubbing sponge dipped in warm water and a dab of laundry soap, rubbed gently back and forth, then repeated with warm water to rinse, got the worst of any spit-ups or night-time spills out. This is not intended to be used for more than a few months, so worrying about the long-term appearance and cleanliness is a bit beside the point.

One modest bonus of this: we found that even after we'd stopped using the positioner, the two "side" cushions had a second life as a prop/support to put under our son when he got his "tummy time"; they're soft but just firm enough to provide a little support across the sternum when used that way.

Customer Review: I used mine correctly
Summary: 5 Stars

This item is invaluable in preventing Plagiocephaly (flattening of the head)...I wish we had known about it for our twins. Newborns especially need a very soft surface for their very soft and malleable skulls. We used it for our third baby and as a result, he has a perfectly round head and proportioned features. The incline greatly reduced spit up as the 'flap' between their esophagus and stomach is not developed yet. Gravity prevents the milk/formula from traveling back up and causing gas and or spit up. I've noticed the biggest complaint about this item is that infants seem to slip down in it during the night. This is true, however, rolling up a receiving blanket real tight and placing it in a "U" shape under our son's bottom prevented this from happening ever again. As a result, he slept soundly, never spit up once, never woke us up with gas pain and has a perfectly round head. I strongly recommend the Boppy Noggin Nest as well to keep the pressure off the head when your baby is not in his crib. Also, if your baby is old enough to roll over, this item is not for you. One other note: the foam wedges on either side do trap some body heat, so don't over-swaddle or put too many layers on...adjust the thickness of your blanket to the ambient temperature. I would say this is a good item for newborns to about 5 months. It made an enourmous difference in the well being of our third child compared to his older twin siblings.

Customer Review: I'd shop around if I were you... This one scares me to death
Summary: 2 Stars

We got this sleep positioner based on the good reviews it got, but I must say I am very displeased with this product. In fact, it scares the H@!! out of me!!! I agree with the review that it is made of cheap material and wears very quickly, but more importantly, the velcro wedges do not stay put on the fabric... they actually come completely off in the middle of the night and we find my son sideways in the bed (happened more than once)! As another reviewer mentioned as well, if the wedges do stay in place, will slide down the middle of the positioner and we find him at the very bottom... so much for the purpose of the incline! My 8 week old son sleeps in between us in our bed and I place the top of the positioner near the headboard and we sleep further down near my son's feet, so he does not get any covers up near his face. My husband actually watched him slide down under the covers and then, luckily, bat the covers off of him... I am so paranoid about SIDS!!
This product is a great idea, but has some serious flaws. I may have gotten a bad one, as there have been so many rave reviews, but I needed to give my opinion and it looks like there was at least one other reviewer who had similar problems and she had to use blankets, etc... to make it work correctly... for the money you pay for this product, you shouldn't have to rig it to work, especially when it comes to something for sleep!!

Customer Review: I Would Not Recommend It
Summary: 1 Stars

I registered for this item before my son was born because I was a nervous first-time mom who, like many, was terrified of SIDS. I wanted to make sure that my baby would be safely positioned on his back and would not inadvertently roll over during the night. What nobody told me was that my baby would not roll over as a young infant (because he simply was not strong enough yet), and that he would also wiggle around in a sleep positioner and end up in a very different place than where I left him.

I used the sleep positioner in a bassinet right next to our bed, and I frequently found my baby scrunched up at the bottom of the positioner against the base of the bassinet. Once, I found him with his head hanging precariously over the top edge. After that, I took the sleep positioner out of the bassinet. I used it for a grand total of 6 weeks. Knowing what I know now, I don't think I will be using it for my next child. I know now that my young infant will be able to stay on his/her back without artificial aids. I know now that babies slide down inclined surfaces. And I know now that the SIDS Alliance recommends NOT using sleep positioners in your child's crib. So I would recommend passing on the sleep positioners (unless instructed otherwise by your pediatrician), and making sure your child's sleeping environment is as safe as possible.

Customer Review: Waste of money and dangerous
Summary: 1 Stars

We bought this for our daughter because she has a larynx condition that causes the formula to pool in her throat. Our doctor recommended lifting her mattress up slightly. Well she's still in a bassinett, so we bought this item.
When we put it in her bed, I was hit by the chemical smell on it, so I checked out the laundering instructions. NOWHERE on the instructions does it say not to wash the wedge. Why would anyone assume you can't wash it? It's in a baby's bed. It's bound to get dirty, especially since it's for babies with reflux and the part their head is on is mesh. So we threw the whole thing on the delicate cycle. My husband sat up for 3 hours waiting for the wedge to dry. When I checked her the next morning, the wedge was still damp, so I dried it some more. (Yes, the cover definitely shrunk too.)
So we tried it again last night and she spit up on it. I sponged off the foam but I kept thinking, there's no way I'm getting all this, it will form mold inside this thing. Sure enough, I read the reviews and that's what has happened.
Between that, all the stories of babies sliding down or off the back of this, it will NOT be in my daughter's bassinett tonight.
I also think it's very deceptive the way all the medical agencies are listed on the front of the box when it's back sleeping they recommend, NOT this product.
