Baby Products Reviews of Hippo Hookon High Chair - NatureCustomer Review: Great Idea Summary: 4 Stars
Fantastic idea! We use this several times a week with our 8 month old daughter. She loves being a part of the meal and socializing with us as we eat. We too have people ask us about it everywhere we go and comment how cool it is. It is less cleanup and it can sit right above or in place of most chairs and booths. She doesn't stick out where workers or inconsiderate patrons might bump her or spill food on her. It does leave about a 2" gap, but for now our daughter enjoys reaching for the food and usually drops it in her chair versus on the floor. There are some unexpected uses. Recently at a graduation party there was nowhere to put her down, we were able to set up her chair and let her sit and play without someone having to hold her all day. The down side is that it isn't all that compact. The best we can figure you have to take it apart to put it in the carry bag that comes with it. Putting it back together while holding my child takes more coordination than I have. That being said, it does fit relatively well in the basket of our travel system stroller (not sure how we will handle it now that we are about to switch to an umbrella stroller). A friend bought a cheaper version at Target that seems to work well also. Either are a must have for on the go parents and great idea for a shower gift!
Customer Review: I wish it could have worked out Summary: 3 Stars
We were extremely excited about this seat when we bought it and it worked out well for the first several months before our baby got too involved during meal time. It was wonderful to have him at the table with us. He was very comfortable, it fit well on our dining table, and it looks great and saves space. But now that our little 9 month old is getting much more involved such as feeding himself and making a mess, this chair became more of a problem. It has no tray, so there are scratches on our dining table from our baby banging his spoons and toys on it. The food gets caught in the clamps which are right in front of the baby and food tends to get into the crevices. There is a big space between the baby and the table, so food falls in the cracks and onto the seat and floor. It is possible to remove the seat covers, but it's not easily done and I don't think it's washable in washing machine. Also, though this is suppose to be portable, we've never taken it with us to restaurants because it's very cumbersome to fold up. So unfortunately though there are qualities that we love about this chair, we're now in search of a booster or high chair that has trays that can be moved closer to the baby's body to prevent messes and a removable tray that can be easily washed.
Customer Review: So far so good... Summary: 4 Stars
We just got the Hippo hook-on yesterday. We plan to use this item primarily in our home. We were nervous about ordering it bc of the skirting on our table, but it fits perfectly. For anyone else with skirting concerns, here are the measurements on our table: skirting is 2 1/2" high, plus the 3/4" tabletop for a total of 3 1/4" thick. The directions say that table top including skirting must not be more than 4" thick, and that the table top itself should be at least 3/4" inch thick. The lip on our table is 1 3/4" from table edge to skirt, and there's still plenty of room for her legs. There is a gap between the table edge and chair of less than 1" (bc of the way its made, this gap will be there regardless of table dimensions). Hope all of this information helps.
Didn't give it a five star rating bc I don't know how its going to hold up in the long run, but seems well constructed of quality materials and is pretty easy to wipe down when we're done with meals so I can't imagine I'll have to send it through the washer often. We haven't tried to fold it up and take it anywhere yet so I can't comment on that.
So far,I am pleased with this product and would recommend it to others! It's exactly what we were looking for.
Customer Review: Not so great seat Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this chair for my granddaughter thinking it would not take up as much space as a highchair and it would be like the type I used for my son. His was a plain one that fit snug up to the table. Unfortunately this one doesn't fit close to the table and leaves close to a 2" gap that food falls down through and the dogs can poke their noses up into, which in turn distracts her feeding. Also, she won't be able to sit close enough to the table when the time comes for her to feed herself because of that gap. The seat belt is too loose and hard to adjust. Plus if you tighten it too far then she sits even further away from the table. Bringing it to restaurants to use instead of the one there is time consuming and cumbersome. The legs swing down and open up if you don't hold them securely while carrying it and then you have to push up the cover to find the release buttons! Using the carrying bag is useless as the legs can fall open and lock in the open position. In my opinion, I would not recommend this seat. I wish I had saved my money and bought another type of seat.
Customer Review: We just bought this and my 5 month old loves it! Summary: 5 Stars
My son is a very social baby, he gets really frustrated when he can't see what we're doing. We tried baby seats on counters, walkers that he could follow us around, but he still got frustrated after a short period because he couldn't be at the same level to see what we were actually doing, not just where we are. From the first time we put him in the hippo chair he was completely comfortable, felt secure, was talking and laughing and stayed happily on his own, watching as I worked around the house, for almost an hour(an eternity in baby time). My husband is very cautious about things being hokey, and didn't like the idea of a hook-on chair, but after persuading him, we bought it, and after he saw how it attached and how secure it was, he's very happy with it as well. I was happy that this model seems more sturdy, (it has support in the bottom of the seat where baby sits, not just fabric to hold him like other models I had seen). It's a great chair, and would recommend it to anyone who needs a similar solution for babies who want to be a part of everything!
