Our twins are 9 months old, and have been sitting up without assistance for 2 1/2 months now now. We wanted to purchase a highchair, so that we wouldnt have to feed them in those bouncy seats forever!
After seeing the highchairs at BRU, we just couldnt shell out hard cash for them, knowing how my duaghters (now 3) highchair was a pain in the *** (you can fill in that blank) to clean, I couldnt IMAGINE cleaning two highchairs, and a 3 year olds booster seat after everymeal! And I have a large kitchen, but two highchairs? Come on...
So we finnally decided against purchasing highchairs, but soon found out that using boucny seats was NOT an option. We quickly borowed two highchairs from relatives (one harmony and one aquarium) I cant tell you HOW DIFFICULT it was having those things around for 3 months. I felt like my hands would wear down to just two stubs after washing those chairs EVERY DAY! So we went back to BRU, keeping an eye out for an easier solution. We were going to purchase the Healthy Care boosters, or the Graco hook-ons (elephant print, the jackpot one thats on Amazon) until we saw the hippos. I was convinced that the Healthy Cares would work better, but my husband insisted on the hippos. This time we went home and "did our research". After viewing the PROS and CONS of both, we decided against the healthy cares because thats TWO chairs we would loose at the table, its too hard to "travel with", too much like a highchair, a small seat for growing children (the boys are premies, but still, the hippos have a longer lifespan than the healthy cares!)... And boy am I happy we made this purchase!
I have never had a problem with it not fitting on tables. Our kitchen table happens to have a very deep lip, as well as our counter where we eat breakfast, so they fit perfectly on those tables, but it doesnt fit well on some. At a restaurant we went to the other day, we had to place a highchair underneath the hippos (so the seat is where the boys butts would be if they were sitting in a highchair, but still comfortable) to keep the table from falling over! So I dont know how convinient they will be for eating out (Im sure that we will figure out which restaurants can hold the hippo, which cant, and what kind of table to ask for, and I do recomend counting baby in on the "party #", for instance if its you, your husband and you baby, say party of 3 rather than party of 2. And maybe we will just bring wipes or something to clean up the highchairs and eating spaces... but anyway!!!) but they are ESSENTIAL for going to anyones house. I dont know of ANYBODY who has children and has 2 highchairs to spare (they are either using the one they own for their child, or only have one in storage for "the next time") Nor do I know of anyone who DOESNT have children but purchases a highchair (especially two!). And finnally I cant imagine how difficult it would be to push TWO HIGHCHAIRS up to a crowded, extended family dinner table! All of these problems are instantly solved with the Hippo. Its also very easy to maintain, just wipe it up, or rip off (yea, its a very hard job) the fabric and wash it in the sink or the washingmachine. I also LOVE that there are absolutly NO CREVECES, you can search high and low and find the only thing in need of scrubbing is your child, and maybe the table/floor. Theres a small gap between baby and table, so food does get onto the floor, and the childs eating area, but thats an easy to clean area, NOT like scrubbing pop-in trays, seatbelts, crevaces, reqlining handles, and the floor and the table! Its also a very secure seat... It has a 3 point harness which is definatly sufficent enough for a hook-on chair, unless you leave your baby unattended for like 15 minutes theres NO WAY a baby could manage to escape from the Hippo, it can hold my rambunctious toddler and she cant even get out! I also found that the rubber hippos that latch to the top of your table make sure that it doesnt get scratched, so dont worry about your kitchen furnature! I too wish that a tray was an availible accessory, but for now we just use table toppers at restaurants, or just let them use our table as their plate, or use the dishes with the little suctioncups on the bottom... Either way thats a small price to pay for all of the wonders of the Hippo Hook-on chairs!
I cant tell you how difficult life is without these chairs, even though my sons have only been in them for a week, we have gone out to dinner, and eaten at my mothers house with these chairs, that also leaves the 5 days that we have used them at home, and it has already found a place in my "what to buy as a shower gift" list!
