Baby Products Reviews of Graco Touch Free Diaper PailCustomer Review: Better than the diaper champ and worth the money. Summary: 5 Stars
got this pail reluctantly since there were so many terrible reviews about this one and most people praised the diaper champ. I got it because I was able to get it free through a work incentive program, so i thought I'd try it out. Now that i have it, i would have paid the $50 or so for it.
My daughter is 3 months old now and I haven't had to change the batteries yet. I can use the target stretchy grocery bags in it... i'm sure you can use others but those tie the tightest when i have to throw the diapers out. I love the touch free aspect so you don't have to let go of the baby on the changing table to throw away the diaper.
As far as the smell goes... there is none! We are in a small apartment and have it in our bedroom and haven't smelled the dirty diapers once. However, when we went to visit a friend who has a baby the same age as ours. We used their "diaper champ" and both my husband and I noticed that their diaper pail smelled bad and didn't like having to reach over to turn the handle thing.
Some other negative comments people have made about it are that you have to empty the diapers frequently. I only have had to change it every couple days at the beginning when you change a million diapers a day, and now that we're changing diapers less, i probably empty it once or twice a week. Besides, i don't like to have dirty diapers sitting in my house a long time anyways.
Customer Review: Touch free...a fun toy for kids... Summary: 3 Stars
We have 16 month old twins so we go through A LOT of diapers. A few months ago, I got fed up wasting money on diaper genie refill packs and started shopping around. The Graco diaper pail got excellent reviews here so I jumped in, and decided to surprise my wife with a new solution, even though it was priced pretty high compared to what we felt a 'diaper pail' should cost.
When she saw it, her first reaction was 'well, it's nice, but...how do we stop the twins from triggering the infra-red opener and playing with it.' Valid concern, the diaper pail quickly became one of their favorite toys (as any parent knows, the best toys from a kid's perspective are the ones that parents don't encourage).
Open...close...open...close... Then one day, the diaper pail got over-full, and somehow wouldn't open or close anymore. When I emptied it, somehow the mechanism to open and close had broken, just weeks after buying it. We can (and do) still manually use the pail, but the electronic part no longer works...
So, my advice is that this would probably be good for new parents, up until kids start walking around themselves and getting curious. I would be careful to empty this regularly, because I suspect ours broke once it got too full. At some stage you may want to just turn off the infra-red part, and just use it manually, it works fine that way.
Customer Review: No support from Graco!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I've had this for about a year. At first the motorized top broke and we called Graco and they were great about sending a new one - a whole new top without cost. I thought great, but then it's been all down hill since then. The thing that holds the filter in the top fell into the diapers and was thrown away by accident. If you don't have this, forget about it, the whole room smells everything the lid opens. Gross!
I contacted Graco 5 months ago to order a new one and spare. I paid $15 and still haven't received anything from them. They don't show this product on their website and Babies R Us no longer carries them or the filters that go in them. I'm ready to box this thing up and send it to Graco so they can keep it. I'm going to go buy the Diaper Genie that I should have bought in the first place. If Graco supported this product it would be fine, but they are obviously phasing this thing out.
Customer Review: Worthless: Do Not Waste Your Money Summary: 1 Stars
We purchased this product because I liked the idea of a hands free diaper pail when having to hold a dirty diaper and the baby at the same time. The concept was great, however the pail rarely worked as promised. Rather than "wave" over the top to open, the pail was intermittent, easily jammed, and often took more time open than just using the hands. The battery operated "hands free" mechanism takes up two thirds of the pail allowing little room for diapers themselves. Not only did we constantly have to change the batteries, but the bag as well being that the capacity is very small. Changing the batteries is time consuming as it also involved a Phillips head screwdriver each time. Replacing the batteries and the bag is very cumbersome and the charcoal filter did very little to alleviate smell. Anytime the pail was opened the smell would overtake the entire room.
Customer Review: Great Diaper pail Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great pail. I love the opening sensor feature and the space for dumping the diaper is so big you could fit two diapers at once. The battery last a long time (have used it for 6 months now and havent had to change the battery). The only thing you have to change every 1 or 1 1/2 month is the filter, otherwise you can start smelling close to the unit. I have an older kid and wished I knew about this pail then. Compared to other ones (diaper champ and the one with the fan option) this is a good option for the price and features. The fact that you can use regular trash bags is a good deal - for the smells, you can always get the bags that control odors.
