Customer Review: Eh. That's as enthusiastic as I'll get for this seat.
Summary: 3 Stars
After doing research and reading reviews, we decided to get the Graco Snugride 35 for our daughter-to-be. After having used it for 14 weeks, I have to say I'm not particularly enthusiastic about the Snugride 35. Some days I just plain hate it.
My complaints are are mainly about the small things that can make daily usage a pleasure or pain. Since I use this seat every day, the small things that are minor annoyances at first tend to get really, really irritating after awhile.
My list of irritants:
1. Floppy Head Syndrome (Actually less of an irritant and more of a safety issue)
My daughter's head always flops quite forward when she fall asleep in the car. It happened when we had the (useless, in my opinion) infant insert in, and it still happens now with a different head support piece we bought separately (I think it's by Summer). The seat is installed correctly, but the angle of the seat itself pitches my daughter's head forward when she's sleeping, so she's slumped over. I don't know if this is because the seat is designed to last longer, so it has more of a seat incline, or if there's some other reason. Regardless, it's unnerving.
2. The Canopy
The canopy may be self-supporting, but the way it is attached to the seat seems rather loose. As a result, it tends to flop down under the back of the seat when the seat isn't locked into the car. This is not only annoying as a design feature (and means that the canopy may pick up gunk if you set it on the ground), but I've had it actually interfere with the swinging motion of the SnugGlider by catching on the ground, waking my baby up. Since she's a terrible napper in general, mama is *not* pleased when this has happened.
I also find the clearance between the back of the carseat and the handle a touch too narrow, so that the canopy often gets a bit stuck when moving it from the rear to a more forward position, while the seat cover also gets pulled a bit away from the seat itself.
3. The Harness
I know some reviewers are a fan of the harness; I'm not. I find that the upper buckle sometimes sticks when I'm trying to take my daughter out, which is particularly trying when she's screaming her head off. I've also found that the tightening mechanism for the harness is inconsistent--sometimes one side of the harness tightens much more than the other, and I have to finagle the straps a bit to get even tightening.
In general, I find the harness makes it a huge hassle to get her in and out of the carseat, especially when the seat is in the car.
4. The Weight
I know this is a sore subject for some reviewers, but the weight can be annoying, especially when the bulk of the seat is factored in. I live in an apartment building and getting the carseat into my apartment involves stairs, an elevator, and a long hallway. When I'm trying to carry something else at the same time (e.g. groceries), the weight and size of the carseat are definitely annoyances.
5. The Size
I own a 1998 Honda Civic. Even though I read online the seat would fit, it really barely fits. We placed the carseat behind the passenger seat and initially had to move the front seat up every time we put the carseat in or took it out. We have finally found a magic distance that allows for a barely comfortable ride for the passenger in the front without having to move the seat for the Snugride; however, getting the Snugride in and out involves some careful maneuvering and usually a smooshed finger.
We thought this would be a great purchase, since we wanted a carseat that could be used for awhile. However, if I had to do it again, I would have gotten a smaller, lighter carseat. As it is now, I'm too cheap to buy another bucket seat, so I'll just continue to grumble each time I use the Snugride 35.
