Baby Products Reviews of Graco Nautilus 3-in-1 Car Seat, MatrixCustomer Review: I love it and so does my son! Summary: 5 Stars
I just bought this for my 3 year old boy who out weighs the limits on his old 5-point harness car seat but is still not mature enough (plus I don't feel comfortable with it) to be using a booster with the car seat belt. I ordered it from Amazon and it took less than a week to arrive.
My son loves it and so do I. This car seat has a weight limit of 65 pounds for using the harness when almost all other car seat have a limit of 40 pounds. So he will be able to use the harness for a long time and that makes me happy.
Pros:
*The extended harness use (I feel is most important)
*The price
*The sturdiness of it
*Was very easy to install!
*My son loves the built in cup holder and storage compartments
*The straps are very easy to adjust (I mean when you pull the bottom strap to make the harness tighter)
*The buckle is really easy for me to un-buckle, but he cant do it because of the angle, which is a good thing
*It's the only car seat I will ever need
*Adjustable head rest (adjust according to height)
Also, on Amazon a *few* people said their kids couldn't sleep in the seat well but my kid, who NEVER sleeps in the car, has fallen a sleep in it three out of the five times he has rode in it so far.
Cons:
*The arm rest do get in the way when I am lifting him in and out but mostly just because he is a BIG kid and I have a tall SUV. If he was lighter and the car was lower it would be easier. But either way I see it as a small price to pay!
*I always have to fish out the buckle strap from under his butt, and again it's a small price to pay!
Customer Review: Mother of 2 Summary: 5 Stars
As a Mother of 2 and a physician, I value the safety of my child's carseat above many other aspects of it. It is the current recommendations of the AAP to keep kids in the full 5 point harness as long as possible. When my tall 3 year-old (42") out grew his Britax Boulevard I started searching for a 5 point replacement. The Graco Nautilus met all of my requirements (saftey, comfort, & easy to clean) and was one of the most reasonably priced of the seats. It was easy to install in both my Tahoe and my Prius (took less than 10 min to get it done). It tightened down so well that it doesn't wiggle at all. (I actually used both the latch and the seatbelt to secure it since the latch system has a lower weight limit than the 5 point harness on the seat but it was unmoving with just the latch). This is one of the first seats I have not needed to have the local fire department install in order to have it completely correct. I was able to tighten out all of the wiggle myself. It was also easy to adjust for my child's height (with a lot of room to grow despite him being tall). It has 2 positions for the buckle strap so I was able to move it out and not let my son's genital area be uncomfortable from a tight strap. My son loves it. He actually asked to go extra places for the first few weeks because he liked riding in it so much. We have taken a 9 hour car trip with out a single complaint of being uncomfortable. My son likes the extra cubbies to hide snacks or toys and the drink holder works well to hold a sippy cup or water bottle. Unlike most other car seats, he is unable to unclick himself because of the design of the buckle. The material is easy to wipe down and the cover can be removed and washed if needed. I haven't found a negative in the first few months and 2 thousand miles of use.
Customer Review: Good, but harness didn't fit as long as I wanted Summary: 4 Stars
I really like this car seat. It is kind of heavy, but feels very durable and safe. My son has loved this car seat too. He is a preschooler and has nothing wrong with the look. I bought this because he outgrew his previous convertible (harness to backless booster) 6 months before his 4th birthday and I did not feel safe having him in a booster yet. This one has a great deal of growing room on the shoulder straps, but not so much with the crotch strap. It only has two places and was way to small for him far before the shoulder straps were. He is now a couple of months past 4 and have converted him to the booster with the shoulder strap since the crotch strap was hurting him. I would have liked the harness to fit for longer, but at this point he is far past the minimum weight and age requirements from pediatricians and it doesn't seem worth it to spend hundreds of dollars on another big harness car seat. I think it is a fantastic seat except for the crotch strap issue. I like that it goes from a harness to a booster to a backless booster. My son likes the little compartments in the armrests and the built in cup holder. I found it easy to remove the cover and clean when he had an accident on a long trip. You have to take the seat out to adjust the strap height, but this has been the easiest seat yet to do it. It has a nice strap guide to help you feed it in. I am partial to Graco as it has good safety ratings but is much more affordable than the Britax models, especially for a single income family. Overall, I feel it is a user friendly and safe seat; however, if you are going to try to harness your child far past the 40 pound limit of smaller seats, you may check out another seat. He was 43 pounds and 43 inches when he complained about the crotch strap if that helps.
Customer Review: So far so good Summary: 5 Stars
We have a 3.5yr old and a 12mo old. The older one needed a new seat because the straps of her old one was getting twisted and also would come undone. The younger one is creeping up on 20lbs. This meant 2 new car seats at the same time. We ended up buying 2 of these hoping they will be the last ones we buy for them. My initial reaction to it is that I love it. It was easy to put together. I love how the slip covers come off, just some elastic loops hooked around plastic hooks. This means I'll be able to fix it myself if one of the elastic loops breaks. The older ones car seat slip cover started coming off and a plastic piece broke. The drink holder location is exactly what I wanted - again the old one had it on the side and having two car seats side by side (one front and one rear facing) we had to remove the drink holder. The older one said it was more comfortable. It's very easy to buckle and unbuckle and it was pretty easy to install. One note is that it's heavy! We've done a lot of traveling this year and I'm so glad we weren't lugging this thing around with us! If you are transferring the car seat make a note of the weight of it. We have this next to a rear facing Peg Perego right now and they worked fine together. The younger one sat in it after we put it together and I can tell she's going to fit well in in. Very happy with the choice we made. And the price was right!
Update after a couple of weeks: still like the car seat. The only thing I didn't like was the liner that sits inside the seat. If you have to adjust the straps to a higher notch the liner doesn't fit well and makes it hard to tighten/loosen straps. I removed the liner and problem solved. So the black part you see inside the seat comes out leaving the silver liner.
Customer Review: We bought Two! Summary: 5 Stars
I too am wondering why the price is so expensive on here, compared to Walmart (where we bought ours). The only thing I can think of is that this carseat is so high in demand, and sold out at many places, that they are selling it from a company with a really high price. I would definately wait until the price goes down to get this seat. That said, this carseat is absolutely the best one yet. I origally wanted to buy one for my three year old nephew (who I care for) because his seat was getting outdated. Instead, I ended up buying two of these, one for him and one for his 5 year old sister. She was already in a plain booster seat, but I decided to buy this so she can be in a harness longer. Now, she should fit with the harness until she is at least 7, which is a whole lot safer. She actually doesn't mind being back in a carseat, because this seat is so cool, with it's cup holder and two "secret treasure holders." I also love the buckle (which I can open with one hand) compared to my nephew's old system. It is also easier for my neice to buckle the harness then to buckle herself into her booster seat using the car seat belt. So much faster! Another bonus, this carseat is also safe for one year olds on up. I do home daycare and occasionally have different kids using the seats. This carseat has straps that are the absolute easiest to adjust. It litterally takes seconds. I origally thought the price of $150 was high (and that was when I was planning on buying just one!), but it truly is the last carseat you will need to buy. It is a fantasic carseat and soo worth the price. There are probably more expensive carseats that aren't as nice. And for the added piece of mind of having them in a harness longer, priceless.
