Baby Products Reviews of Graco Nautilus 3-in-1 Car Seat, MatrixCustomer Review: Good for the MOney Summary: 4 Stars
I want to start off this review by saying that a dear friend of mine was in a car accident with her then 2 year old. He was in a Graco Nautilus and it did it's job. It was a bad accident and he walked away with minor bruises. So, given that Consumer Reports and other car seat research agencies rate the car high AND it held up well in an accident this was my first choice.
This IS NOT a rear facing car seat so the woes that I usually write about car seats do not exist for this one partly because of this fact. It was EASY to install and EASY to adjust. Yes, it will be a paint to adjust the straps having to uninstall and reinstall the seat but most car seats are like this.
It is a little snug to get my 2 1/2 year old in and out of BUT she likes the seat and it will last her a long time. The loosening and tightening of the straps on a daily basis is EASY for a pull strap like the infant carriers... I cannot say the same thing for our Alpha Omega Elite (now Safety 1st).
I do recommend this car seat BUT have not tried any of the Britax products (which usually get rave reviews) for comparison.
Oh, and we have a 2006 4-dr Sebring and a 2007 4-dr Honda Civic and the seat fits fine, and was easy to install, in both.
Customer Review: Great seat but . . . Summary: 4 Stars
There are a few annoyances you should be aware of. First, the harness straps are made from a thinner and more coarse material than that of infant carriers. Feels a little chintzy. It also makes the straps twist more often. Second, putting the child into the seat can be tricky. The harness straps and belt clip want to rest on the seat itself, which means you have to wrestle them out from underneath the child. You can tuck the harness behind the sides of the body pillow, but they can become twisted that way. As for the belt clip, there is a removale velcro cover that you can take off and leave off, or put back on after the child is seated which may or may not help keep the belt clip forward. The last annoyance is that the chest clip is huge, and the prongs on one side could easily poke your child if you aren't careful. They could stand to knock 1/2" or so off of it. That said, I still love the seat. Other stores have different colors but they are more expensive unless you can get them to match. And with the LATCH and tether, this seat won't move at all. It's tighter than my Chicco car seat was and it wasn't loose! My son loves to see where he's going, not where he's been, so as soon as he hit the 1 yr/20 # mark I put him in it. He loves it!
Customer Review: Great combination seat Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this as a second car seat for my 1997 Honda Civic after looking for a good car seat for my small car. The Britax roundabout is in my husband's 1998 Honda Accord. I read rave reviews and also the negative ones about not much padding and head falling forward or little recline. I like this seat because it will grow with my child and change to a booster up to 100 lbs. Although it is not as soft as the Britax and does not have Gracopedic foam, it seesm to be adequately padded. I like the shoulder and buckle pads. My son (2Y) looks comfortable in it, but for a long car ride (e.g. 5 hours or more) I will probably use the Britax. I agree the recline is not impressive, but on the "steepest" recline, and with the natural lean backward of the Honda seat, my son's head does not fall forward when sleeping, but leans on the side. The mesh lining makes it a little more breathable for his sweaty baby head. I assembled it and installed it myself without my husband's help. The seat cover is more complex than the Britax, but so far it appears to hold. It is one heavy seat, though, and I will probably not try to bring it onto a plane as a five-point harness seat. The seat fits fine in the rear center and an average size person can still fit on either side of it.
Customer Review: Great Carseat Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered two of these carseats to replace the ones my son had out grown. I've had them in my cars for over a month now and am very happy with them. There were many other reviews that complained about the "crotch" strap being too short. I don't know if Graco changed this or if other reviewers had installed wrong? Either way it fits just fine on my son. He is 3 1/2 years old. 39 inches tall and about 35 lbs.
Pros:
-Great for tall kids (easily adjustable as the child grows)
-Sturdy Cup holder
-"Hidey" Hole for toys, pacifiers, etc...
-Easy to install
-Love that it can become a booster and a backless booster. Wish I had seen this one before I bought my old toddler seats. Would have saved me a lot of money.
Cons:
-Very heavy. Not a problem if you install it and leave it in but if you have to move it around a lot it would be annoying.
-Not easy to get everything off to wash the cover.
-Kind of a pain in the butt to put together. Not terrible but a little confusing even with the directions.
All in all I am very happy with my purchase. My son loves it. It makes him feel like a "big boy" and he also loves that it looks like a race car seat. :)
Customer Review: Just as good if not better than Britax Summary: 5 Stars
I had a Britax seat I was borrowing from my sister-in-law but they needed it back for their infant so I had to search for another seat and knew I couldn't afford the Britax but I wanted something that was just as reliable and easy to use. I found it with this car seat. It has exceeded my expectations. I like it better than the Britax because my daughter(2yrs) is not able to loosen the straps like she was able to with the Britax and she was also able to undo the clasp across the chest but not with this one. This also has the anchor and latch systems and are easy to use- maybe not quite as easy as the Britax but I know that it's in there properly and that's what matters that my daughter is safe. She also thinks it is comfortable and likes the cup holder and arm rests with the cubbys in them. I also like that the cup holder doesn't stick out to the side like I've seen with others and they can seem flimsy but this one isn't. I will be purchasing another one when my youngest daughter is big enough for one. I also put this together in a matter of 5-10 minutes as long as I followed the instructions and installed within 5 minutes after also following the instructions. If safety is what your looking for I would highly recommend this seat.
