Baby Products Reviews of Graco Infant SafeSeat Car Seat Bas LegacyCustomer Review: Love this seat, but it may not be for everyone. Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this car seat (in the Roxy style). I did A LOT of research on car seats prior to purchasing. There are many things that we love about this seat, but recognize that this seat is not for everyone. Here are a few things to consider:
1) Seat accomodates up to 30 lbs. (versus the 22 lbs. of a standard seat)
We loved the fact that this seat holds to 30 lbs. and 32 inches long versus most seats that only accomodate a child up to 22-24 lbs. The longer a child can be in a backward facing seat, the safer it is for them. Many of my friends had 9 lb. babies and had to purchase another seat before their child was a year old because they had outgrown the standard car seat. My daughter was small at birth (4 lb.s 11 oz.), and although she looked tiny in the seat, it supported her small size just fine. Plus, since she was small, she'll be using this seat for a LONG time! The downside is that this seat weighs more than the average carseat. You should consider that the car seat alone weighs 15 lbs.; once you add the weight of the baby, you could be getting a good work out. For some, this is a deal breaker, however we haven't had a problem with it. Our child is now 9+ lbs and the seat+baby weighs around 24 lbs. total. I manage to carry her easily between the car and house and into quick stops at stores. I realize that this will become increasing more difficult as she gets bigger, which is why I highly recommend purchasing the Graco Infant Snugride Car Seat Frame to use w/this seat. It is our ONLY stroller, the seat fits perfectly into the frame and it's lightweight, making it very easy to haul around and overall a bit smaller than most other strollers (easy to maneuver in stores). I LOVE it.
2) Will the seat fit in your vehicle?
This is a common concern for many considering the SafeSeat. I highly recommend visiting a store that will allow you to take the store model out to your car and see how it fits. We drive a 2001 Subaru Outback and 2003 VW Jetta and the seat is installed in the middle (the safest location) in both cars. Passengers can still ride in the back seat next to the baby, but it is a snug fit. I wouldn't want to travel a far distance, but quick trips are completely reasonable. We don't have other children, so space for other seats is not an issue for us. I did have to slide the passenger seat slightly forward in the Jetta to fit the car seat, but it is not uncomfortable for passenger. If you place the seat directly behind one of the front seats, you will have to move the seat more forward than if you place the seat in the middle.
Other things that make this seat worth purchasing:
1) Seat easily snaps into the car seat base and is easy to remove by pulling one lever.
2) Seat offers a large adjustable canopy (however the Roxy version does not offer a window.
3) Seat upholstery is removable and machine washable. This came in handy after one unfortunate diaper explosion. The upholstery held up very well in the wash and you can't even tell it was washed. Looks great!
4) 5-Point saftey harness is easy to operate and can be easily lengthened by pressing one level to quickly remove child.
5) Carrier handle is padded, comfortable and ergonomic.
6) Seat upholstery offers lots of padding for a comfortable ride.
7) Offers EPS foam liner for additional safety in the event of an accident.
Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Love, love LOVE the Safeseat. Summary: 4 Stars
For our registry, we splurged on the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio. But four months after our daughter was born, she was already cramped and sweating in that pricey mobile throne...
Turns out, though nearly all infant carseats (including the Primo Viaggio) set a 20-pound limit, some 70 percent of babies exceed 20 pounds by their first birthday. Fortunately, Graco had just presented the Safeseat, the only seat on the market to hold up to a 30-pound infant.
The Safeseat is wildly safe, good-looking, easy to adapt to multiple strollers, and breaks down quickly for cleaning (including machine-washable upholstery). The five-point safety harness is simple to attach and adjustable with one hand. And miraculously, the seat is snug and cushy but roomy enough to grow WITH your newborn, up to a year and beyond.
Another fantastic perk of the Safeseat is that it quickly adapts *without a base* to other vehicles -- two clips on its armrests allow a standard lap belt to secure the Safeseat to any car or airline seat. If you travel at ALL, going from plane to taxi to relative's car, the Safeseat is a godsend. And all this for a much more reasonable price than a Peg Perego.
On the down sides, the seat is a heavy schlep: 15 pounds even without your precious little angel. It also takes up more length in the backseat, making the driver's or front passenger's seat a tight fit. For my money, I'm happy knowing my daughter has that much more room in which to stretch and relax, but it might be an issue if you drive a car with tight cabin space.
All told, I plan to use this until my daughter outgrows it, and then again for the next one...
Customer Review: Great Seat! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this seat when by daughter was 3 months and a mere 12 lbs. I had been using an Evenflo that I borrowed from a friend before this.
Our other seat had a 3 point over the head harness (which I hated). The five point harness in this seat is easy to operate and tighten with the baby in the seat. Some people have said that they didn't like the fabric, but, after my daughter's diaper exploded on our way to a camping trip, I appreciated how easy the fabric was to clean in a campground shower. Even taking it apart and putting it back together were simple with the owners manual.
The best part, is that my daughters head didn't flop over at all. That was a constant problem before. She seems very comfortable now and I feel good that we can get her in snuggly on every trip.
Buying this seat, with it's higher weight limits, will keep me from needing another convertible seat. We can just buy a forward facing/booster when she is ready.
The cons: It does not fit on the top of a shopping cart & it weighs a bit more than the evenflow. Evenflow's push to release handle system is easier to use than the Graco one. Some people have said that it doesn't fit in their car. We drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Honda Element and don't have a problem, but I would go to Babies R Us and actually put it in your car before buying.
Customer Review: great seat esp for travelling Summary: 5 Stars
Our old car seats were not LATCH equipped and I could just not get them in as securely as I wanted. They also had a 22 pound limit and I thought my son would outgrow them before he was a year old. The deciding factor is that we were going on a plane/cruise/Disney and my old travel system was really bulky and I did not want to lug it around. Even though my son was 7 months old when I bought this with the stroller frame, it was worth every penny. He will be a year old on Thursday and he still fits in the seat. He will be too tall for it before he is too heavy.
Pros:
- fits up to 30 lbs and 32"
- easy to install in LATCH equipped cars
- can adjust straps from the front
- stroller frame is very light and folds up well with a big basket
- comes in a dark color (doesn't show dirt as much)
Cons:
- rather large, so make sure it fits your car
- sometimes have to remove car seat from stoller frame to get to larger items
- a bit heavy with an older baby, so definitely have the stroller frame handy
- does not fit tightly into all shopping carts
- only hooks to stoller frame with baby facing you, when older babies would rather look forward
Customer Review: Great Car Seat Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this car seat because of the increased weight limit, which should last us at least until our daughter's first birthday. Our daughter (now 6 weeks) has been very comfortable in the seat so far, and in fact it's one of her favorite places to sleep. It is very easy to adjust the harness without upsetting the baby, and it is very easy to get it in and out of the base. One great thing about this seat (also true for the snugrider) is the ability to easily snap it out of the carseat base and into the graco stroller frame or an extra base on our second car--both highly recommended. This seat is definitely heavier than the snugrider, so while it is convenient that you don't need to buy a new carseat at 25 pounds, you may stop wanting to carry the baby in the carrier much earlier! The size of the seat may also be a problem for some. We have had to shift the front seat a little farther forward to accommodate the safe seat in the back seat in both of our cars (a toyota rav4 and a suburban).
