Baby Products Reviews of Graco Infant SafeSeat Car Seat Bas LegacyCustomer Review: A great car seat overall - lots to consider though Summary: 4 Stars
Before my baby was born, I decided I wanted to try this car seat out mainly because of the extended weight limit (30 lbs). I also wanted one that wasn't a part of those bulky baby stroller systems but could be snapped into a stroller frame so I wouldn't have to wake her up (and it has lived up to this expectation). The padding that comes with the seat wasn't secure enough for her tiny head, but I fixed that by buying the Eddie Bauer head support Eddie Bauer® 2-in-1 Head Support - Gray/ Pink. I have not regretted buying this seat and love the fact that my one year old is happy in it and very comfortable. We were even in a small car accident (at a slow speed) and my baby was absolutely fine to my relief.
Something to consider before buying is the size of this seat. Some moms prefer compact, lightweight carriers when on the go. This seat is pretty hefty in weight at 15 lbs. I bought this knowing that because I preferred having a higher weight limit for later on. Once she became a few months old, it did start to feel really heavy. But even now, as she is a year old and 18 lbs, I've taken the carrier out with her still sleeping for short trips. It's really worth the trouble in my opinion. And the stroller frame is helpful too if it's just too heavy to carry.
This seat has been used in an Oldsmobile Aurora, GMC Sierra truck, and a Mercury Villager GS Van. In the truck it was in the center of the back seat and fit fine there. With the Aurora and the van, it fit a bit tight behind the driver's seat. Both cases, the car seat carrier handle needed to be positioned higher for the driver's seat to go back as much as possible. The space might be tight for someone that is very large or really tall.
So while this has curbed the need for buying another car seat for awhile, I still had to buy a stroller. My baby girl is just too curious and excited about her surroundings that a rear-facing, reclined carseat stroller wasn't interesting enough at 7 months. If she was sleeping, it's great and soothing, but once awake, she wanted to sit up. Sooner or later, we were going to need a stroller so it didn't really bother us to have to buy one.
So lots to consider before buying, but I really like this car seat and feel it's worth buying despite the cons! Few other things I didn't go into detail but I mentioned below in my overall pros and cons:
PROS:
- 30 lb. weight limit
- easy to install
- snaps easily in the stroller frame Graco Snugrider Infant CarSeat Stroller Frame
- Nice pattern/neutral color (bought the Legacy)
- Comfortable (according to my baby)
- Strap easy to adjust for different clothing weights
- Easily snaps in base, easy to remove (unless too close to seat)
- Can be used without the base, worked great in times of emergency when base was not availabe. Not as secure but helpful for those rare occasions.
CONS:
- Does not fit on the top of a shopping cart. I either put the seat in the shopping cart itself for small shopping trips or snapped it in the stroller frame. Large shopping trips were mostly done when I was with the hubbie until she was big enough to sit up.
- Pretty heavy in weight
- Tight behind driver's or passenger seat (which sometimes makes it difficult to pull the lever to release seat from base)
- Canopy is large but doesn't shade completely. My girl's feet were always exposed to the sun which had to be covered with a blanket.
