Baby Products Reviews of Graco Baby iMonitor Multi Child Multi Room Baby MonitorCustomer Review: Does the job you need - listens to two different rooms, period! Have owned 2 yrs Summary: 4 Stars
We've owned the Imonitor Duo for 2 years now, so I feel like I'm qualified to make a fair and long-term review after having it so long! It's done exactly what we needed it to do: monitor two bedrooms at once. When my daughter (now 2) was born, we weren't yet ready to have my son's room unmonitored (he's 4 now). We tried using two baby monitors at once, but they interfered with each other and wouldn't work. Although the Imonitor was over $100 new, it was worth the price and peace of mind. It has its pros and cons (detailed below), but the bottom line is that you won't find another monitor that tracks two rooms at once.
HOW IT WORKS: The monitor flips back and forth listening between two rooms. You set the desired time interval to listen to each room. When my daughter was a baby, I set it to stay on her room 20 seconds at a time, then flip to my son's room for 10 seconds, back to hers, etc. Another reviewer said they felt they'd miss their baby crying when the monitor switches away from that room, but I've never had that problem. I have 3 kids now, and I've never missed one of them crying. The monitor also has sound-activated lights, one room being green and the other orange, so you can tell who's awake/crying just by light color.
PROS:
-The monitors are very sensitive. I have the units all the way across the room from each child, and it picks up even their quietest noises so I know when they're awake.
-I have a new 3,300 square foot home with thick 2x6 walls and extra insulation and the monitor works great. Lesser monitors gave lots of static being too far from the base, but the Imonitor handles the distance no problem. My kids' rooms are actually on opposite ends of our home, and it still works great.
-I found the controls to be very easy to operate, and I, too, am not an engineer! Just push the switch to either room 1 or room 2 and then change the volume or increase/decrease listening time. That's all there is to it!
-I like that you can really customize how you listen to each room. I can have the volume on one room up pretty high but then have the volume lower on the second room. Nice because for a baby, I wanted the volume up to hear even the little noises; but I wanted my son's room quieter so that when he yelled "MOM!", it wouldn't be magnified throughout the house.
CONS:
-If you do get a bit of static, the lights on the monitor will jump. If you're doing something where you can't hear the monitor but are depending on the lights to know when someone's crying/awake (say, mowing the lawn), this can be deceiving. After 2 years, I've found I can't really depend on the light feature too much because of this (but I use the sound more anyway).
-There have been a few occasions where the monitor will suddenly go out of range or need to switch channels, and when this happens the monitor will emit a low, persistent beep sound when listening to one of the rooms until you move the monitor to get better signal. (This beep sounds from the parent unit, not in the child's room!) This can be annoying if it happens in the middle of the night. Hasn't happened often, but it's annoying when it does!
-Although the batteries in the portable parent units are rechargeable, they don't last very long at all. If you take the unit off the charger and carry it around or need to set it outside or something, it'll begin beeping low battery after just a couple hours or less. Luckily I haven't had to move the parent units around very much, but if you're someone who would depend a lot on the batteries, you won't like the ones it comes with.
In summary, every product has its quirks; but after 2 years, I can say this product has simply done what it said it would and we've been happy with it. I also feel that it's nice enough that, when we're done with it, I'll be able to either consign or sell it for at least half its orginal price and get some of my money back.
