Prior to buying this monitor, I was up constantly checking my son's breathing. He is a very heavy sleeper and I was always worried he had stopped breathing. Though this is not a "medical" device and cannot prevent SIDS, it gave me peace of mind knowing the monitor would go off if my child stopped moving for over 20 seconds.
Since having the monitor I have slept MUCH better. The alarm has only gone off a couple times and I think it was because he moved over to the edge of the crib off the pad. Or maybe he really did stop breathing and the alarm caught it and I shook him gently and roused him from it. I don't know. All I know is that I can sleep better having this monitor and whether it actually DOES anything or not, that is enough for me.

I went without for the first 2 weeks. I kept waking up every 15 minutes checking on my baby. Then my little one got a bad cold and couldn't breath through his nose. I was up every 5-10 minutes checking on him. So, I decided to invest in this monitor and I sleep as soundly as he lets me(waking "only" every couple hours for feedings). It gave a great peace of mind. And this product really works. I tested it with the baby, without the baby, with the dog walking around etc. Be sure to test it yourself too considering a celeing fan etc. can detect a movement when there is none from your baby. Even though it is a crib monitor, it works in a bassinet also. GREAT PRODUCT AND A MUST!!! I have tested this unit on maximum sensitivity. At first, I was bothered with the constant tick that is an indication that the baby is ok. So I took the sensor out to see what would happen without the baby, ... it stopped ticking. The baby was not moving, but just it's heart and/or lungs working keeps the unit ticking. It detects even when you blow on the sensor. Maybe it should not be on maximum sensitivity, since ceiling fans, etc might activate it, but I was truly amazed with the sensitivity.
You can turn the tick down so it is not too bothersome, it is like a clock ticking, about once a second when baby is ok, if it stops ticking for about 30 seconds.. a noticeable alarm will ring.

This monitor is by far the best baby item we have. I love that I can sleep at night, and the monitor will alert me if my son stops breathing. We have been using it for 4 months, and have had no false alarms. You just have to remember to turn it off when you pick up the baby! I did not have this monitor with my first child, and I sure wish that I had. It is a must have for any new mom who worries about sids, whether this is your first or your fifth baby. This was given to us as a gift and has helped us have many nights of sleep. Out son was 8 weeks early and spent 4 weeks in the hospital hooked to monitors. When we were able to bring him home this product helped me sleep better, knowing that it would sound if something went wrong. We only had a few false alarms and that was after we moved him in to his crib, with the inclined sleep positioner, and the crib mattress. My son was to light weight for it to sense him so it would alarm. But once he weighed more it has worked amazingly well, no alarms!!!! Just knowing that it is there helps me sleep every night!!!
