Customer Review: Addressing the Leaking and Mildew Issues
Summary: 3 Stars

We bought THREE of these sippy cups. One stayed at our house and the other two went to the grandparents houses.

Ours (the HOME cup) definitely had the mildew thing happening--and we've now discovered that it's molding. I imagine ours grew mildew and mold because we used it so often and probably didn't clean it as thoroughly and as often as we should have. Ours would be in use *literally all day*. The other two are mold and mildew free because the grandparents usually use them and wash them *immediately after use*.

Maybe if we had invested in a few more for home, mildew wouldn't have been an issue.

We found the grandparents had "leaking" issues because they didn't know how to secure the lids on properly. It's a little tricky at first, but really it's just a matter of lining the pieces up properly.

In the end, it's a great cup. The design is awesome. We loved that it kept milk cold for hours. Our son learned to hold it and drink on his own beautifully. But IF YOU WANT TO AVOID THE MILDEW ACCUMULATION, YOU NEED TO INVEST IN SEVERAL!!!

And I mean "invest"; it's hard to buy six of these at the price, but I think it's the only way to avoid mold.

We recently bought the next size up.

I don't think amazon sells it. We bought ours at Target or Babies r Us:
Vacuum Insulated Hard Spout Sippy Cup BS534BL003

It's the toddler version of this sippy cup. Bigger and without handles. It's mostly stainless steel--super easy to clean, no more mildew accumulating lips. The spout is hard (not porous like this sippy) so it doesn't accumulate mildew like the original. We're ten times happier with it. It still keeps things cool (and for longer!) and it's perfectly suited to our toddler.

Customer Review: MADE IN CHINA
Summary: 2 Stars

I was disappointed to find out that this item is manufactured in China. This really should be disclosed in the item details. I would probably have given it a five if I had not been specifically searching for a stainless product that was not from China.

As a result of criticism received on my above review I find it necessary to elaborate. I purchased the Foogo by Thermos Leak-Proof SS 12 oz - Straw Bottle for my son for the same reason many parents have, a non-toxic alternative to the popular plastic products on the market. However, I also had another concern at the time of purchase. I knew I wanted a stainless steel product, the problem was I also knew I did not want one that was manufactured in China. I was concerned with the increasing number of lead tainted products being exported by the country and simply did not want a metal product from China. My problem was finding documentation on many of the stainless steel products on the market. During my research, I discovered that although Thermos has many products manufactured in China they also had a high end line that was manufactured in Malaysia. So I decided to take a chance and buy the foogo hoping that it was also from Malaysia since it had a higher price tag than the Chinese made products. I was disappointed to find out when it was delivered that it was indeed "Made in China". In an attempt to save other like minded parents the same frustrations I reviewed the product, giving it two stars and pointing out that it was manufactured in China. I then proceeded to copy my review to the remaining foogo line of product, disclosing that I had not purchased them personally but to assume that they were made in China.

Customer Review: Love this cup but it's starting to stink.
Summary: 4 Stars

I had been using Avent's Magic cup sippys but my son wasn't drinking very much so I decided it was time to try a new sippy and since this one was insulated and BPA-Free I thought I would give it a try despite the price. It is so much easier for him to drink out of this cup than the Magic cups. The cup has never had a leaking problem accept for once the other day but I realized the valve wasn't completely installed correctly. The cup does not have too many parts and is not hard to put together. The magic cup had less parts but was harder for my son to drink from so I would rather have more parts for a better product. The new problem I have been having is that the cup is starting to stink like sour milk. If you wash it out with water the smell goes away until it dries and then it smells again. Its very wierd and very disappointing since I really love this cup. The cup has dented but we don't mind.

Pros:
BPA-Free
Insulated
Easy to drink from
Nice look

Cons:
starting to smell
will get dents if your son throws it around like mine
heavy compared to plastic cups

Update: I really loved this cup but another problem has come up. There is a silcone rim that seals the top of the cup and after taking a close look at it, it appears there are black dots underneath it (that weren't there before). I have to guess that it is mold growing underneath there. Too nervous to keep using the cup which is a big disappointment since its my son's favorite cup. We have probably owned the cup for 6 months now.

Customer Review: UNSAFE sippy cup, and it leaks to boot
Summary: 1 Stars

We have used this sippy cup for over a year now and had been moderately pleased with it until some recent discoveries...
- The cup was never what I would call "leak proof", but I felt the leak was not too bad. Now that I have many, many stains all over my wool rug, I have now changed my mind.
- There are many pieces to take apart for cleaning and it is not easy to do so. If you don't line the soft spout up with the hard top exactly right when you are putting it back together, it will leak a LOT. If you don't screw the lid on VERY tightly, it will leak a lot. We had one that started leaking profusely (just during regular use, not holding it upside down), even though it was assembled just right. It seemed to be leaking from underneath the sealed yellow band that is part of the handle assembly.
- We've gone through four soft spouts for this sippy. My 2 year old chews through the spouts easily.

Now for the UNSAFE part that caused us to throw in the towel on these sippys:
- We just discovered that under the little yellow rim inside the cup at the very top is a great hiding place for gunk, bacteria, and buildup. You would not believe the amount of black GOOP that we wiped and scraped out of there after discovering this. It has been cleaned many times by hand and in the dishwasher, and we were horrified that our son has been drinking out of this grossly contaminated cup for so long. Now that I look at the cup with a more discriminating eye, I can't imagine that you could really get it absolutely clean, given the design.

Customer Review: Cup leaked, returned it, second cup leaked - enough!
Summary: 2 Stars

This cup LEAKS. The first one I tried leaked like crazy, so I returned it. The name of this item is "Leak-Proof Sippy Cup", so I figured that if mine leaked, it must be a mistake. Wrong. The second cup leaked just as badly.

It will not leak if you always keep it right side up, do not tilt it, do not bang it and do not slosh it. But if you turn the cup upside down, or even tilt it, it drips briskly from both the spout itself, and the little air hole opposite the spout. So if you give it to your child, it will leak milk everywhere (and isn't that why you buy an insulated cup, to put milk in?) Leaking water is not the end of the world, it'll dry eventually, but leaking milk is not goode.

It will also leak milk all over the inside of your diaper bag. If the spout or the little air hole comes into contact with cloth or anything absorbent, milk will wick right out of the cup, soaking your bag, your clean diapers, your stuffed animals or your extra set of kid clothes.

Otherwise, it's a terrific cup; safer than plastic, doesn't hurt your eyes design-wise, and keeps milk nice and cold. It is quite heavy. You do not want your kid throwing this at another kid, or even dropping it on their own foot. Ouch. But I can live with that, all sippy cups are heavy when they're full. I can't live with the leaking.

Why on earth can Gerber and everyone else in the business make a $2 sippy cup that doesn't leak no matter what you do to it, yet Thermos can't pull it off with this $15 item? It's very frustrating.
