Baby Products Reviews of Foogo by Thermos Leak-Proof SS 7 oz Sippy Cup with Handle in Blue

Customer Review: my daughter likes it
Summary: 4 Stars

UPDATE: So after using this cup for 3 weeks now, I have to admit that it leaks SOMETIMES! When first reassembled after washing, the cup does not leak ... even when vigorously shaken upside down! Once my daughter drinks out of it .... one of three scenarios has happened:
1) the cup still does not leak when vigorously shaken upside down
OR
2) the cup leaks a few drops before stopping even when shaken (I think this is liquid that is left in the spout after already passing through the valve)
OR
3) the cup leaks when shaken.

I have not quite figured out yet why it leaks sometimes and not other times. Anyway, my daughter still loves this sippy and I will keep using it since she is usually in the highchair when drinking.

As for assembling the cup ... it has become much easier, and it works best if I pull (and wiggle) the spout through the lid instead of pushing the spout through the lid from the inside.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I don't think this cup is as bad as other reviewers rated it. Yes, it does have some design issues (and maybe Thermos is "listening"), e.g it is really difficult to reassemble and you need to align the spout (purple) exactly into the lid (pink) or the sippy does not close right (I assume that's why other say it leaks). But if assembled correctly this sippy does not leak. Another plus is that it is made of durable stainless steel, therefore BPA-free and healthier than other plastic sippies. If this means that I have to put a little bit more effort into reassembling it, so be it. The only issue I have with this sippy is that i don't see how much my daughter is drinking, but that is expected of a stainless steel cup.
I also own the BornFree Training Cup (not the BornFree Drinking Cup!), but my 6 month old daughter prefers the Foogo. Personally I don't really like the spout of the BornFree Training Cup because there is not much difference between the spout and a bottle nipple ... they both have a y-cut (so what's the point of transitioning to a cup?) and the valve is not directly attached to the inside of the spout (guess that's why they need the leak-proof y-cut ... also why their Drinking Cup leaks).

Customer Review: Leakproof? Not the one I received!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this sippy because my son loves chicken broth and smoothies, and I figured this would be an ideal thing for us to bring them to the playground and keep a decent temperature.
Anyway, I started using it just for water.
The screw-on lid fit tight the first time around, my son loved the bottle, we were happy.
Then, by the second day, I cannot get the lid to tighten. It comes loose ON ITS OWN. And when this happens, it can leak the entire contents of the bottle in a minute (picture large puddle in your floor.)
I checked that I was putting the rubber top (where the spout is) snugly in the lid, so it did not interfere with the screwing of the lid. Nope.
Also, if this is for toddlers, it is not a good idea that you cannot tighten the bottle enough to prevent those little devils from opening it all the way. My son hasn't realized it yet, but once the lid gets loose (within a minute of putting it on on day two), it would be very easy for him to finish the job and make a humongous mess.
Also, like someone else said before, the rubber spout is very soft and easy to chew to bits for a teething toddler. I will definitely not use this bottle when he's teething. Then again, I will probably not use it at all. I think I'm putting it in the cupboard as the bottle of last resort.
If you just wanted the metal (vs plastic) and do not care about the thermal insulation, get a klean kanteen with the adaptor for a baby sippy nipple. I use the avent nipples or the born free nipples and the bottle works LIKE A CHARM. No leaking, no plastic, etc. However, the klean kanteen has no insulation and you cannot put extreme temperature liquids in it, or the baby will get hurt.
I started using my regular nissan coffee thermos for the baby to get his smoothie. It's more messy but he's getting the idea.
Bottom line: Don't waste your money. It is an expensive sippy of poor quality. Get a regular adult thermos or a regular baby sippy. Plus, it is made in China. If you have concerns about other materials and this is why you're getting the metal bottle, you may want to get one made in a country that has less problems with lead.

Customer Review: Tried many sippys... This is the FIRST that does not leak!!
Summary: 4 Stars

Seems other reviewers (on the foogo without handles) has said this sippy cup leaks. My very active toddler twin boys have been man-handling these cups for the past 2 days without a single leak at all! I am very impressed! Love the hearty construction and rugged look. Too bad for my hardwood floors, however! Oh well, I guess with time, they'll learn to throw them gently :)

Anyway - we have been using the Born Free sippys for the past 4 months and really do like them. However the lids keep cracking and they leak just like all other sippys, plus they sweat terribly. The foogos do not sweat at all, which is another bonus.

Most importantly here - we are super glad for the safe plastic & metal construction (and will continue to use the Born Free as well).

My ONLY complaint with these cups is that

1) They are only 7 ounces and my guys drain these things rapidly. Seven ounces is not enough to get us by on ANY excursion.

2) I don't know if it's easy to come by replacement parts, but the valve parts look like they will damage or get lost very easily.

3) Wish they made a sport spout for when they grow out of the sippy phase. These cups are an investment $$ and appear they will last a long time. So it would be nice if the cup would grow with them rather than have to ditch it in a year. (plus I'd like to have one with a sport top for me as well!)

Anyway - that's why the 4 instead of 5 stars. But I definitely recommend them.

Oh, it is kind of a soft spout which is nice... I should mention, they will seep some water if your kids push down on the spout (like mine) to make the water come out on purpose. Otherwise when they are just laying around on my couch, carpet and hardwoods, they absolutley do not leak a drop!!

We also tried the foogo straw cup. Nice, but they do leak when turned sideways... my boys aren't old enough for them yet. Maybe next year. Again, too bad the lids are not interchangeable, wish Thermos had thought this through. (And, Thermos,if you're listening... PLEASE MAKE A 10/12 ouncer!)

Customer Review: Poor design - insane parts breakdown will drive you crazy
Summary: 2 Stars

As others have stated, this cup definitely has some pluses: it's stainless steel; it's insulated; etc.

But none of these pluses will matter because you will go NUTS dealing with the parts breakdown.

There are FIVE component pieces to this cup:

1. The hard blue cap, which screws down to the main body and has a hole in it for the yellow spout/handle/seal.
2. The aforementioned spout/handle/seal--it's a single piece covered by the hard blue cap.
3. A small, soft silicone rubber seal.
4. A hard plastic, tabbed "clamp" that snaps in and holds the silicone seal to the inside of the spout.
5. The stainless steel main body (with a blue-plastic base permanently attached).

Competing cups have three pieces. Are two more pieces really that much of a hassle?

Well, in this case, YES. And here's why.

1. You must take apart all the pieces and wash them in a dishwasher daily, otherwise, MOLD will grow between all the parts. Especially underneath the blue cap--in the gap between it and the spout/handle/seal.

2. The rubber seal and plastic clamp are small enough that they can be easily pushed out of the silverware basket of a dishwasher and end up elsewhere in the dishwasher.

3. Aligning the rubber seal and plastic clamp so that the clamp does not deform the seal is tricky. Without perfect alignment, you get leaking from the spout and the airhole.

4. Aligning the spout/handle/seal to the hard plastic cap is virtually impossible. There are no alignment tabs or shaped insertion points. And because the parts are amorphously rounded in shape, even if you think you have the parts aligned, when you screw down the cap to the body, the parts easily twist out of alignment. Without PERFECT alignment, the cap will leak profusely.

Why is it that Playtex can make a $4 sippy cup with three parts (in total) that's easy to clean and re-assemble, and Thermos charges $14 for a cup that you will soon throw away?

Customer Review: I'm done with these cups. I've worked hard.
Summary: 1 Stars

Four months ago, I bought the 7 oz cup with handles and the one without handles (so I have 2 cups). Yes, it leaks if you don't get all of the parts lined up correctly. This includes getting the spout part lined up with the lid. I always wash mine by hand, with little brushes, because yes, there are a few different parts, and to get it clean, you must scrub in between them (especially if you put anything other than water in there). And now both of my cups have gotten mildew. I think this is because I left mine out with milk in it for a little while, then returned it to the fridge, and repeated this for a couple of days in a row instead of washing it daily. I'm about to use chlorine bleach to kill the mildew, and then I will wash mine daily (or, in the case of the one I keep water in, I will rinse it out and allow it to air-dry daily).
Update: I don't know if the chlorine bleach killed it, but the brown stains are still there. Also, I called Thermos, and they said they will send a one-time replacement part for both cups (I have blue and yellow cups - it's the yellow part with the spout).

Update: Thermos promptly sent new yellow spout parts (one for each cup I have). I've taken better care of these, and they haven't mildewed. I want to emphasize what a pain it can be to use this cup if you don't like leaks (and isn't that the point? I could use a regular cup otherwise!) Sometimes I get it all put together just right, and no leaks. Many other times, I can't quite get it right, and it drips in my car. Grr!

Update, Jan 2011: I'm so done with these cups. I just discovered that inside the cup, right under the yellow plastic lip, there is a little frosted plastic or silicone ring area. And it's full of black moldy crud! I tried scraping it out, but I can't even get it all out. What a pain in the butt. I'm done with this cup. Thermos can't fix this one, unless they want to put some nasty chemical in that area to prevent the build-up. Time for a Klean Kanteen.
