Baby Products Reviews of Fisher-Price Sounds 'n Lights Monitor with Dual ReceiverCustomer Review: I really wanted to like this monitor, *but*... Summary: 3 Stars
Like another reviewer: "I had purchased an older version of Fisher Price monitor... In hopes of getting a similar quality product, I purchased this Fisher Price monitor. It is horrible. ...there was a lot of static in the monitor to the point that it was difficult sleeping with this monitor on."
I too bought this after I'd lost components of my older (circa 1998) Fisher Price monitor vanished and my (circa 2005) Sony BabyCall also lost components due to a move. Both of those monitors had worked flawlessly, and I particularly liked the Sony. Very clear, very flexible, great range, etc.
The good things about this product give it the 3 stars: Dual monitors. Light visuals of sound. Optional nightlight. Decent pricing.
Unfortunately, I'm on Amazon searching for a replacement because I just. Can't. Take. The. WHINE. Any. More. I've checked to make sure the channels are set correctly. I've checked to make sure the antennas are properly tightened. I've checked power connections. And it still has periodic static and *constant* "squee" to the point where I can't take it anymore. In addition (on a minor note), this product feels cheap compared to its ancestor (and the Sony). It's hard to describe what I mean, but the plastic looks and feels... poorly made. Mass-produced. Mold seams are palpable.
This monitor is going into the trash.
Customer Review: Need a LOUD Monitor? Summary: 5 Stars
I bought all 3 of Target's Baby Monitors to assess for my hard of hearing father. He is unable to hear my disabled mother call for him from the other end of the house.
All 3 moniters came with a transmitter an two receivers.
1. Graco's Imonitor Vibe 2: Digital Technoligy, the most expensive, the least static, dim pulsating lights react to sound, most importantly NOT LOUD ENOUGH for Dad to hear.
2. Fisher-Price's 900 mhz Private Connection: Medium priced, light hum at full volume, great blinking RED LIGHTS react to sound, louder than the Graco Unit, but not the best of the bunch.
3. Fisher-Price's Sounds 'n Lights Monitor: Surprisingly the cheapest at $37.59 plus tax, slight hum that Dad can't hear anyway, great blinking red lights react to sound, and most importantly BOOMING SOUND that is easy for my Dad to hear at 8/10 of maximal volume. The transmitter is so sensitive it picks up sounds from the bathroom across the hallway from my Mom's bedroom.
I even bought a second set of this model so my Dad can hear Mom clearly when she sits up during the day in a different room. The second monitor can not be set to the same frequency as the first unit and all recievers must be spaced apart from one another to avoid interference.
This monitor has a 500 foot range which is plenty for use in a large house.
Customer Review: Terrible product - horrible design! Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this product after having been happy with the older model for my first baby four years ago. The changes they made to the design are horrible! The product is cheap and so light-weight that the receivers fall over very easily (the old style was much more solid and didn't tip). The on/off button on the transmitter is so small you can barely get your finger on it - when you do manage to press the on/off button, the transmitter falls over because of the same cheap, light-weight design. The antenna on the old style flipped down nicely to make packing easy - the new model requires you to unscrew it, which leaves it loose in your bag! The volume control on the transmitters have no numbering system, so unless the baby is making noise you can't tell if you have it on loud enough - or if it's too loud; the old style granted us numbers on the volume control. And it picks up more radio waves than the old design.
Why this company would make so many changes to make it into a flimsy piece of junk is beyond me...especially when they had a previous design that worked!
Don't buy!!!
Customer Review: I don't use it much, but it's reliable when I need it. Summary: 4 Stars
I knew from working in children's retail years ago that most monitors are returned from frusterated parents who buy expensive products assuming they will work better. For some reason this moniter, one of the very cheapest ones, seemed to always work better. I have friends who got them from garage sales and as hand-me-downs and it still works great. So when I needed one I was excited (but not surprised) to see it was still available and registered for it.
I ended up not using it as much as I thought so I am glad I did not spend a fortune. I had no problems with reception.
I like the fact that it can be plugged in to the walls as well as battery powered for use while mobile. The lights that light up when baby makes noise were the best. We like to have people over or the older kids are being noisy and sometimes you could not hear the monitor very clearly over the noise unless it was turned full blast, but I could see the lights lighting up from across the room.
I have no problems with this monitor, I just don't get a chance or need to use it that much.
Customer Review: GARBAGE, and I'll tell you why... Summary: 1 Stars
THE GOOD: base monitor has a night light that my kids like to play with. It comes with two receivers. The cord for the base is pretty long.
THE BAD: Always has a low level of static. Can only hear my kids when they scream loud. When they talk at a normal volume the monitor doesn't pick it up well.
When we turn up the volume on the receiver (so we can hear the kids) we can also hear local AM radio (bad).
BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT BUY.
We loved the first version of the Fisher-Price monitor which is no longer sold anymore. With the old monitor, we could hear the kids whisper and ever hear them breathing with minimal static.
This new monitor is terrible.
I can only hear the kids if they scream.
Anytime a truck or motorcycle drives down the street, the monitors pick up on the vibrations and amplify them so you get a loud static rumble.
I wish I had done more research on Amazon before I bought these.
