Baby Products Reviews of Fisher-Price Sounds 'n Lights MonitorCustomer Review: Worth it! Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and I purchased this monitor for our first son and we LOVE it! There are reviews that state that it has issues with static, and sometimes it does. HOWEVER, because it has the lights that it does, if you keep those within your sight at a time when there is much static, they will light up when your child is making noise.
We are very impressed with this monitor because of the distance we can go with it. I have taken the monitor with me to take the trash to the dumpster (around 200+ ft away) and I was still able to hear my mother and wife talking in it. We have noticed that using one of the two channels make a difference depending on where it is...and cell phones can cause the static interference.
With all that said, my wife and I were unable to find this same monitor for our second son (we live in a different state and a smaller town) and so we purchased a Sony Baby Call. We cannot stand this monitor. The range is horrible (I am sitting in the same house not more than 75 ft away and it is constantly beeping saying it is out of range. We are definitely returning the Sony and will purchase a Fisher-Price Sounds 'n Lights monitor online.
I highly recommend this monitor. If you keep the volume down (not all the way off), the static isn't bad and you will hear your child fine (not to mention the lights lighting up). It is worth it for the money!
Customer Review: You get what you pay (so little) for. Summary: 1 Stars
As was said before, you do get what you paid for. It hasn't been a BAD receiver considering I only use it every so often for my son, HOWEVER . . . I have only had this monitor for 4 months and it is already broken. The first few times I used it, I got interference, static, could hear each and every word that someone in/near my neighborhood was having with their CB radio friends. The overhearing convos got so annoying that I had to turn to volume completely down and watch for the red lights to indicate my son was making noise! ALSO . . . I don't use the monitor on a "daily" basis, but the volume wheel, which is used to turn the receiver on, just completely stopped working. The past few days, it would turn and turn and turn THEN turn the unit on, but the volume wouldn't change once it was on . . . and it was difficult to turn off. It will now not even turn ON. The thing has never even moved off of the table, so it isn't like it's been being dropped and abused. Like I said before, it is OK if you want something cheap and are really using it very sparingly, but if you want something that is going to work for an extended amount of time, this is probably not a good choice.
Customer Review: Well, you certainly get what you pay for. Summary: 1 Stars
I needed a cheap and temporary replacement for my nice (Sony) monitor that I accidentally left at my ILs. I headed out and bought the cheapest thing I could find....and that's what I got. A cheap monitor.
It looks and feels like a toy. If you drop it on the floor, it will likely shatter into a few pieces. The AC adaptor won't stay plugged into the receiver so I have to make sure that there is no tension on the cord from the receiver to the wall or it won't stay plugged in. Nice.
The sound quality is not surprisingly horrible. I hear mostly static but am able to hear my child when he cries or talks. There is also lot of interference. Any time a car passes by in front of our home, the signal breaks up and cracks and pops. And as I'm sitting here typing this, I hear faint music coming from the receiver. In case you're wondering, there is no music in my child's room. Must be picking up a subspace signal.
I had thought I might keep the cheap monitor and just leave it my ILs for future travel, however we will definitely be returning this one when my old monitor arrives. It's soooo not worth the hassle.
Customer Review: It works but spend more $$ and get a better product Summary: 2 Stars
We have a 8 1/2 month old and we have used this monitor the entire time. Why? I am not sure. I must just be too cheap to buy a new and better model. Maybe I just did not realize that I subconsciously like the tejano music it picks up several nights a week. Perhaps it is that the annoying static finally morphs into some type of soothing white noise that we have grown used to hear whenever this monitor is on. It also conveniently announces a text message or call when my phone is on silent..the hand piece chirps and sputters if it is within a 5 foot radius of a cell phone. Sometimes it does this every 10 minutes or so, even if the cell is in the other room.
Bottom line, spend more than this on a baby monitor. The monitor works, we can hear him roll over. I have to mention that. However, the interference and static are terribly and make this product flawed. I cannot understand why Fisher Price could not have easily fixed this. It is 2009, for God's sake, technology is inexpensive and so advanced.
Customer Review: worthless junk Summary: 1 Stars
This monitor worked reasonably well for the first few weeks, but ever since then it has been essentially worthless. We almost never get a signal any more - we just hear static. Sometimes switching channels (there are two) and/or turning the unit on and off will make the unit work for a few seconds. When we do manage to get a signal it is still overloaded with static and, if we move the receiver or walk in front of it, prone to interference. The receiver is typically located about fifteen feet away from our baby's room, in a straight line and with only one closed door between the receiver and the monitor, so distance and obstructions are not factors. We've also tried changing the batteries and have not noticed any improvement.
I wish I had looked at the Amazon ratings before we bought this. It is a piece of garbage and has deterred me from buying anything from Fisher Price ever again.
