When I was pregnant the first time, not knowing anything about baby monitors, I put this one on my registry. I wish I hadn't. A very lovely friend purchased it for me and I appreciate her generosity, but man, this thing is a piece of garbage.
The static that comes through is horrible at first and having been using it for the past two years, it's only gotten worse. I find it hard to get to sleep at night over the constant static it emits. Worse than that, is the Spanish-speaking radio station I tend to pick up on a clear night. Hey, I like Mariachi as much as the next person, not so much on my baby monitor.
Next complaint is the volume dial. You have to turn it up past the second setting to even get sound out of the receiver. The first time I used it, I didn't know this and there's no telling how long my baby cried before I knew what was happening. I still feel guilty about that. Secondly, when you turn the monitor off, there's a loud crackling noise that tends to be loud enough to wake anyone else in the room that might have managed to get to sleep over the static and "La Cucaracha".
Now that our second child is due to arrive, I'm throwing this thing out and getting something better. I can't deal with another two years of static and late night jam sessions.

This monitor was initially indispensable in caring for our twins. The default channel had too much static to use, but once we switched over to the 'B' setting, that stopped being a problem. I can hear everything through the monitor, even being able to distinguish between my two children breathing. I love the option to turn off the sound and see whether the babies are noisy - one of my girls HATED bedtime until she was a few months old, and this allowed us to let us see whether she was still crying after 5 minutes without having to go in the room or listen to the I-hate-bedtime screaming. After nine months of daily use, the receiver stopped working, but this is decent value for the price. I found that the Safety First monitor I bought picked up the sounds from this one's base, but with increased sensitivity. It would have been nice if the nightlight could be turned on without the monitor relaying sound, but the option to turn the nightlight off is fine.Customer Review: ok monitor

I picked this up as an inexpensive replacement for an old monitor that my toddler broke the ac adaptor on. A replacement adaptor was going to cost more than a new monitor, so...
The static isn't too bad for us - not any worse than the last monitor. Range is good. This is a good basic baby monitor and works for us.
HERE'S A TIP ABOUT STATIC FOR ANY BABY MONITOR - another appliance plugged into the same current can cause static, even if that appliance isn't running. That means ANY plug connected in the same line, such as all the outlets in a bathroom, all outlets in a kitchen, all those in a bedroom, etc. With my old monitor, for example, if we had it plugged into the same line as our cell phone adaptor across the room, there was HORRENDOUS static. (Ironically it was clearest if you wre running the toaster on the same current.) My electrical engineering hubby had to explain it to me!

This monitor is horrible! I thought the idea was nice, lights indicate noise level as well the sound. Static is horrible! It squeals for no reason, even when I'm across the house from the base! On channel B, the sound goes in and out for no reason. And the batteries died so quickly, in the middle of the night while I was sleeping no less! I didn't hear my daughter until she was screaming and wailing! Thank God it has a cord to plug it in as well, which is how I use it now, but that is SO inconvenient! The monitor picks up the baby in the downstairs apartment crying through the floor clearly, so why does my daughter sound distorted? And the newest thing: it now picks up a radio station! As my boyfriend says, we'd be better off using walkie-talkies with the button taped down on the one in our daughter's room!!!Customer Review: Absolute Junk

I returned the first monitor with power problems. Unless held just right the power supply to the receiver failed. The second unit has even more problems. Any subtle movement near the transmitter causes a loud crack from the receiver. The antenna is loose and reflects any movement to the microphone through it's rattling. The receiver has steadily picked up more and more static from it's power source. After three weeks the only way we can get even marginal reception is to use batteries. If the box and receipt had not been thrown away this unit would be returned as well. I'm purchasing a new (different brand) monitor and will consider crushing this unit and sending it to the manufacturer to let them know how I feel about their products. "Fisher Price" is for toy's not electronics.
