Baby Products Reviews of Fisher-Price Rainforest Waterfall Peek-a-Boo SootherCustomer Review: Cute crib soother with many options Summary: 4 Stars
My son had issues falling asleep since 10 weeks and continues to rely on a crib soother or mobile at 8 months old. Compared the the FP Aquarium ones, I think this one is much more interesting and creative. I love the fish and bubbles! The light can be too bright when he's fairly drowsy after the middle-of-the-night feeding so I use music only, and thankfully there is a very low volume setting. Sure wish the music/motion/lights could be longer than 6 minutes as I often stand rocking him while watching it for almost that length of time! And having to lean over to reset it while holding onto a crying (sometimes arching) heavy baby can be scary. To have an option of setting a timer (eg. 6 - 15 - 25 min) for the 3 modes would be perfect. Or a remote would be helpful but this always jacks up the price, and it means potentially disturbing the baby when resetting by remote. Fortunately, his sleep issue is getting better and haven't had to reset the timer. We had a very old model of the FP aquarium that ran for 20 min and when he was younger, I had to reset at least once on many occasions! That always disrupted his falling asleep.
The music isn't annoying. I was worried the rainforest sound would drive me nuts as it's on for all 3 modes but it doesn't bother me at all.
Have only had it for 3 weeks, used 1-2 times daily. Haven't changed the batteries it came with yet. Hopefully batteries will last another 3 weeks??
Another small "complaint" is that the on/off switch is way to accessible for my baby. He sees me pushing it so he tries to get at it and sometimes succeeds in turning it off! And he doesn't know how to turn it back on reliably so that defeats the soothing purpose! Fortunately, I think it's happened only when I'm still in the room.
A better timer would have given it 5 stars! (even if it drained the batteries faster. A sleeping baby is far more valuable than the cost of batteries!)
Customer Review: 12 months of use and still going strong! Summary: 5 Stars
We have had this crib soother for about 12 months now. When my daughter was around 5 months old, she figured out how to kick the parrot to get it turned on and it made her ever-so-happy. We never had any issues with the animals squeaking and we use a night light in her room so we do not have any issues with the lights being too bright. My daughter is 15 months old now and has found the switches on the side that control the lights and motion. Apparently she prefers just the music because every time I turn one of the others on, she switches it back to music only.
While I agree that it is a very daunting task to get the straps off, I would be more worried if they weren't difficult. Babies get smart and get rough with their toys... which poses a safety risk! I think the straps are so tight for safety reasons and therefore I am able to tolerate it. We only ran through batteries when we had this on full swing all of the time. Now that she prefers just music or music and lights (occasionally) we have changed the batteries maybe twice in the last 6 months. She will turn the music on when she's just playing in her room, too. So, this gets used at more than just bedtime and naptime. I think this will last until we get into a toddler bed and through the next little one!
We have another crib toy that I purchased a few months ago as a backup for when the soother needs the batteries changed or just to give her something different and it runs through batteries A LOT faster than this. The straps are almost as difficult on that one as the Rainforest soother but I have noticed my daughter has managed to get it somewhat loose from time to time. Overall, VERY happy with this purchase and I wish I had gotten it for her from the start.
Customer Review: Our baby loves this Summary: 5 Stars
I replaced our old Ocean Wonders Aquarium soother with this Rainforest Waterfall version about a month and a half ago. The Aquarium was still working and our baby liked the lights and music, but I was looking for something that would play for a longer period of time. With the Aquarium, I had to go in her room and press the button a couple of times before she would fall back asleep. Not fun at 3 or 4 in the morning when all I want to do is fall back asleep. I had read that the Waterfall soother plays for up to 18 minutes, so I thought I'd check it out.
The soother has 3 different length settings: lights, music/sounds, and movement for 6 minutes; lights and music/sounds for 12 minutes; music/sounds only for 18 minutes. There are 3 settings for the sounds: rainforest sounds without music; rainforest sounds and lullabies; rainforest sounds and classical music. There are 3 volume settings as well.
I have ours set for 12 minutes of sounds and lullabies and I rarely have to go back in her room and press the button a second time. She almost instantly settles down once the music starts. If I happen to put her down for a nap or for bed while she's still awake, she'll quietly watch the lights and fall asleep on her own. And I'll admit that hearing the songs and rainforest noises over the baby monitor is soothing and relaxing as I try to fall back asleep.
My only complaint is that the lights seem REALLY bright for something that is supposed to lull a baby to sleep. I ended up covering ours with a light flannel blanket to dull the light a bit. The baby can't see the critters, but since I don't have them set to move, it's not really a big deal.
Despite the bright lights, we're happy with this soother.
Customer Review: Still loves it after 6 months! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this soother for my son when he was 6 months old. He is 13 months old now and still loves it. When I first purchased it, he couldn't turn it on by himself. Now, he can do it on his own. My husband and I can hear him over the baby monitor playing with it both when he goes down at night and wakes in the morning.
I have it set on the "works" for him--lights, music, sound... and I have only replaced the batteries once so far. But to be fair, he only uses it 2 or three times a day when he is in his crib. I do agree with the reviewer who said that it was bright. There have been several times where I have walked into his room half asleep at night only to be blinded by the soother's blue light! Thankfully, it never really seems to bother my son. I have noticed that is a kind of a pain to put the soother on the crib (and to also take it off). That difficulty notwithstanding, I was honestly thrilled that it could be attached at all. I have had problems with other toys not fitting on the thicker wood rails of my son's crib. Overall, I am very happy with this soother, it has exceeded my expectations.
Update:
My son is still using this cribside toy and he is now over 2 yrs. old! It helps him get back to sleep at night when he wakes and I'm sure saves my husband and I many trips up to his room.
Update #2:
This toy is now attached to my daughter's crib, a hand-me-down from her big brother who is now almost 4. She is 10 months old and loves the soother as much as my son did. Talk about really getting a lot bang for your buck, what a great purchse this has turned out to be!
Customer Review: My Special Needs Daughter LOVES This! Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter has severe developmental delays and this toy soothes her without fail. We were introduced to it at a children's hospital before she was taken into surgery by a nurse. This soother calmed her immediately and we quickly bought one to take home.
The button is large and easy for her to turn on/off in spite of her lack of muscle control. Sometimes I will peek into her room in the middle of the night and I can see that she has turned the soother on from it's pale blue light. The light also helps her to find her pacifier by herself which means I don't have to go into her room to help her every time. If she isn't able to find her "binky" on her own, the light helps me to quickly find it in her bed.
The toy also has a lot of options and settings. For instance there is music, "nature noises" like running water and crickets chirping, the different animals can move, the afore mentioned light, and three volume settings. Any one of these can be shut off completely or used in different combinations. If the light is too bright for your child, you can easily turn it off while still having the music or sounds playing. Are the moving animals and water keeping your baby from going to sleep? You can turn off the movement while keeping the light and music/sounds on. We personally have ours set with the light on, movement, "nature sounds", no music, on low volume. LOVE IT!! The soother automatically shuts off after a period of time. The lower the battery is, the shorter the soother's "play" time is.
I really hope that Fisher-Price continues to make this product or else we would be in trouble!
