Baby Products Reviews of Fisher-Price Rainforest Melodies and Lights Deluxe GymCustomer Review: Love It! Summary: 5 Stars
My husband bought this for our daughter as her first Christmas present. I thought it would be months before she would use it but she seemed to enjoy it right away. Initially she stared at the lights until she fell asleep. Now she kicks and bats at all the toys. She coos and "talks" to the lights and butterflies above. She loves the music and even gets a little fussy in the gaps between melodies. This is the ONLY toy with music that she likes, the rest make her cry. With this we can usually entertain her long enough to eat a peaceful dinner.
The mat was easy to set up, folds in half nicely to move around, doesn't go through batteries too fast, cleans up easily. I just put the bottom part in the washer and air dry. It only takes an hour or two to dry.
My only negative is that it is a little hard for me to interact with her because there is so much stuff above her. I find myself laying down beside her instead of kneeling over her. It makes tummy time a little harder too, just because it is a little awkward to put her in and roll her over.
Otherwise this is an awesome buy! My daughter loves it and I will be sad when she is too big to use it. I look forward to buying the Rainforest Jumperoo and hope she likes it as much as the gym.
Customer Review: Great for all different stages! Summary: 5 Stars
Before I bought this gym I'd read both great and terrible reviews of it, so I was a bit worried. Now I've been using it for about three months and it does exactly what I needed it to do! My baby is four months old and it's fun to watch how he's constantly discovering new things that interest him about this gym. At first it was the sounds (even I find the nature sounds incredibly soothing), then the lights, then the mirror, and now he's reaching for the toys (at first they kind of overwhelmed him, so I removed them for a while). Now that he spends more time on his belly he loves the little things he can grab and he can spend quite a long time looking at all the colorful animals, and he tries to grab those too.
A lot of parents seem to complain that the butterflies don't spin. I think it's a good thing - I think if they did it would be just overstimulating.
It took me a while to figure out how to fold and move it, and it's true that even folded it still takes up some space, but now I just keep it under the crib and it works perfectly!
I guess it depends what kind of expectations you have for a gym like that, but as far as I'm concerned it meets my needs (that is - my baby's needs) just right.
Customer Review: Didn't survive past baby #1 Summary: 2 Stars
This is the type of thing that I think appeals to the adults looking at it but not so much the baby playing with it. There aren't enough toys in reach at any given time and the prime spot, directly overhead, are out of reach altogether. The "glass" part of the mirror fell out. The monkey is attached by a curled tail and it came out as soon as a little hand tugged on it even a tiny bit. Most importantly it didn't stay connected. Instead of the "legs" staying in position by a hook like I've seen on other (more simple) baby gyms, they snap in at the top. One of them stopped staying in, every time we moved the gym it fell out, and it was annoying as heck. As soon as my son outgrew it (when he began crawling) we got rid of it. At this price I'd like to see an item like this, that gets used for such a short period of time, last at least through two kids.
For baby #2 we used a much, much simpler one, the Bright Starts RRRoaring Fun! Play Gym. It's out of production now but I'm sure there are similar items. No music or lights but plenty of what baby wants. I've been thinking my son (#1) wasn't "into" the baby gym and that my daughter (#2) is, but now I'm wondering if it was the Rainforest gym he wasn't into.
Customer Review: Baby's first gym Summary: 5 Stars
My baby has been using this play gym since he was just a few days old. He loves it! And, because as parents we love to see our son happy...we love it too! It is such a joy to watch him play in his gym, because he will move his arms and legs, smile, coo and squeal in delight at the colorful toys! He "talks" at the bright butterflies and will stare at the lights for a long time! He absolutely loves the monkey, too! There are so many things I love about this play gym! It is bright, colorful, soft, comfortable (our son has snoozed in this gym a few times), stimulating and keeps our son occupied for quite a while. It comes with so many toys that you can move around to switch things up or take with him for diaper change or in the car seat. The music is pretty fun and the rainforest sounds are very soothing. My son is now 2 months old and he still loves it whenever I place him in his Rainforest gym! And, I'm sure he'll continue to love it as he gets older and is able to use the "play" mode and discover more about this gym's features (crinkly leaf, different textures and embellishments on the mat). This is well worth every penny we spent and I would totally recommend this to anyone looking for a play gym for their baby.
Customer Review: I love it; she loves it; we're good Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this for my 3 month old because, quite frankly, it just looked too cute to pass up and she needed more toys. :) She loves it! She stays under it talking and checking everything out and it's so much fun for me to lay next to it with her and watch her discover everything. Even her older siblings (5 & 4) love to rearrange all the toys and keep it interesting for her. I also love that it can be a tummy time mat. There are a few cute little 'touch' features on the mat, but it also includes a few toy loops across the edge. I use plastic links to connect from one loop to the next, then attach toys to the links, so she has a little chain of toys that can't get too far out of her grasp. The colors are great and the animals are adorable. The only thing that kept it from being a 5-star for me was that you need a teeny screwdriver (eyeglass size, probably) to open the battery compartment. We've had it for a week now and I still haven't found my little screwdriver to check out the electronic features. Still, it's working out really well for us, and if it's anything like the matching mobile and Jumperoo, I expect that I'll still be pleased with the purchase.
