Baby Products Reviews of Fisher-Price Rainforest Melodies and Lights Deluxe GymCustomer Review: Great Gym - Baby Loves It Months On... Summary: 5 Stars
I love this baby gym, and so does my daughter (now 6 months). I inherited it from my in-laws when she was just a month old. At first she would just lie there and look and the pretty lights and dancing butterflies (our fan made them move) but over time she began kicking the tucan bell and crinkle leaf, then hitting the elephant rattle and parrot spinning thing, now she chews on monkey, plays with the leaves in giraffe's mouth and looks at herself in the mirror.
What I love about this gym is the variety of toys:
* bell tucan which she also enjoys chewing now - it's beak is made from a colourful satin which must feel nice in her mouth. she also loves nibbling on the back felt feathers and little feet.
* plush monkey with satin curly tail
* elephant rattle with soft plus ears
* parrot flipper that easily spins when batted at
* red froggy mirror, perfect size for her to hold and with firm edges to chew
* pretty satin butterflies that dance in the wind
* big crinkly leaf, easy to kick and grab
As my daughter's arms have gotten longer, she now plays with the butterflies and gym poles. She can sit up now and play with the ears of the giraffe. It's have to be her favourite toy.
The music settings are great too:
* two volume levels - loud and soft
* can play music or ambient rainforest sounds (e.g. crickets, frogs, bird chirping) which is very nice to listen to
* also has a 'rattle play' option where the gym plays a short snippet of music when the gym is shaken
The music tunes loop about 3 or 4 times then the gym auto-switches off, which is handy to save battery power as I have left it on a couple times accidentally.
Customer Review: A safe choice without researching 50 mats! Summary: 5 Stars
My husband and I recently purchased this mat for our ten-week-old baby girl. She's our first child, so we've spent HOURS researching various items while trying to choose well. There were an overwhelming amount of choices, and we looked at everything from Fisher-Price to Baby Einstein to off-brand products.
Long story short, she LOVES her new play area. Like other reviews mention, there are a lot of interactive pieces. We can move around the individual toys which is really helpful depending on her mood and movement - we can strategically place the rattle pieces or move the harder plastic toys away from her head and toward hands or feet.
The best part for our daughter is the canopy's lights and sounds. She's fascinated watching the different colors flash. She also enjoys the butterflies hanging from the top. As for the sounds, it's not nearly as bad as we were dreading. The baby songs have a kickier, island feel to them. (If you've spent too much time listening to music on other baby items, you'll understand what I mean!) The setting with just nature sounds is also a nice change and still keeps her interested.
We do have a few minor criticisms... The "20 minutes" of music actually repeats some of the songs, but there's still a nice variety. Also, it takes C batteries which aren't the most common but fine if you know to plan for that. It's portable but not quite as easily moved as the pictures would have you think.
Overall, we're very happy with our purchase and would definitely choose this one again!
Customer Review: Great! Summary: 5 Stars
The Fisher Price Rainforest Gym is a wonderful toy for babies! At a time when they can't control their environment by grabbing and mouthing toys, this provides them with a way to "play". Our kids bought one for our grandson when he was about three months old, and he has loved it! Even at a very early age he interacted with the gym by making noises, kicking, and waving his arms. He is now four and a half months and is beginning to be able to grab some of the toys that hang from the gym. It is very stimulating...it has colored lights that go on and off, and is very colorful. Even the mat that the baby lays on is covered with colorful pictures that keep him interested when he's having "belly time". He's not a bit over four months, and I notice him being even more interested in the mat because he can maintain the position for longer periods.
When we started babysitting at our own house, we bought one as well. We knew it would be an invaluable babysitting tool, and help make our little guy happier. We're very happy we did.
The toys/rattles that hang from the gym can be changed, so if the time comes when he is not as interested in the original ones, we can put on some new ones, and it'll be a whole new toy.
I would definitely recommend this gym. During the early months your baby needs his environment "switched up" to keep him content and happy. This provides you one more option, and may just give you a few moments to yourself from time to time as well! It's a godsend, and well worth having. I highly recommend it.
Customer Review: Rainforest bliss Summary: 5 Stars
We got this for our son when he was about 7 weeks old. Although he couldn't reach out for the toys yet, he enjoyed watching the lights and listening to the rainforest sounds. He didn't like the music until he was a little older. It plays Brother John and Skip to the Loo and 2 other songs. I love that you can move the toys around, but I do recommend buying a pack of rings so that you can hang the toys lower or add other toys. I like the Sassy ones because they have different textures. The mat could be a bit thicker, but if you're using the playmat on a carpeted surface it's fine. It was easy to put together (requires a small phillips head screwdriver). The arches connect to the mat with large button-like bottoms. It has 2 volumes, which really comes in handy when baby is sleepy. My son has fallen asleep in it several times after playing for awhile. The baby-activated setting is a bit confusing. My husband thinks that there is a sensor that detects baby's movements and that's what activates the music, but it doesn't say anywhere on the packaging or instructions what exactly causes the music to be triggered. I've used it everyday for 3 weeks and haven't had to change the batteries. The music or sounds play for 20 minutes and shuts off automatically. I love that it has soft and hard toys and you can actually see yourself in the mirror, unlike some "mirrors" that just reflect a blurry image.
Customer Review: Great for home, not meant for travelling Summary: 5 Stars
This mat was a no brainer for me after getting the Fisher-Price Rainforest Open-Top Cradle Swing and seeing how wonderful the colors and brightness of the product are. No, it is not meant for travelling and the mat is perfectly thick enough, even on my hardwood floors.
The only issues I had with it was the amount of time spent trying to figure out how to get the butterflies to move (they don't) and that there are no extra rings to add length (a little short for a 3 month old to view AND grab at the same time) or to attach more of your own toys. But those are insignificant and not problems compared to how many hours she has played with it and believe it or not, her activity on the playmat has tired her out so that she finally slept through the night! That in it and of itself makes this worth so much more than I paid for it, as far as I am concerned.
No matter which one you end up choosing, be sure to get a playmat. It was incredible how quickly she has developed since we bought ours a week ago. She "talks" so much more now, coos, smiles, laughs and just makes crazy noises and loves kicking the elephant rattle and looking at herself in the mirror. Also, I posted some customer images for a better idea. Enjoy! :D
