Baby Products Reviews of Fisher-Price Precious Planet Happy Giraffe BouncerCustomer Review: Baby loves it, small design flaw Summary: 4 Stars
We received this as a gift for our baby, and she has loved it ever since I put her in it at about 1.5 months. It's been fun to watch her figure out that the bouncer moves when she moves, and more recently that she can make the toys rattle when she bats at or grabs onto them. She is big for her age (4 months) and still fits comfortably in it.
Pros: This item is easy to put together and take apart for transporting and it is lightweight, making it very portable. It's also pretty sturdy and has a "harness" strap so I feel comfortable leaving the baby in it. We set it down wherever we are and it usually occupies the little one for 20-30 min, or maybe more if she chooses to take a nap in it. The toy bar is removable so you can use it like a little seat if you want. There is also a vibrating function, though I have not used this personally. The biggest pro is that our baby seems to love it, and it is one of the more reasonably priced bouncers with all of the basic functions.
Cons: The base is made of metal rods that curve around, but the problem is that they are wider than the bouncer itself (in the photo it's where the green rubber covers the white metal rods) so we, and anyone else who visits, are constantly tripping over the bouncer if we're not careful. The worst is when we get the metal part caught between our toes and then trip - I honestly thought I broke my toes a few times... ouch! It seems that a solid base design or at least some panels to cover the sides would be much safer since I'm not about to put this on an elevated surface to avoid tripping over it. Another small con is that the middle ring plays sounds when you pull on it, but one of the four sound cycles is a little useless, and sounds kind of like very low growling (other sounds include a "meow", and 2 MIDI-sounding tunes). Not a big deal, but I could do without it personally.
Overall I would recommend this bouncer over some of the pricier models unless you are pressed for space and can't put it somewhere where it won't be a safety hazard!
Customer Review: Truly useful baby gear Summary: 5 Stars
My son LOVES this. He's six months old now, and has used it since we brought it home from the hospital. As a movement-loving baby, he thrives in this thing, and sat in it constantly as a newborn (when he wasn't being held) so he could look at us and his mobile. We even changed his diapers in it, since his reflux made him lose much of his lunch if we laid him on his back for a diaper change right after a feeding. Now that he's older, my son can very effectively bounce himself by waving around his foot, and the seat never fails to put him in good spirits. He enjoys the toy bar, too, and I'm sure we could hang other toys on it if he gets tired of the three rings/animals. And -- very importantly -- it washes so, so well. It always comes out of the dryer (after only a brief spin) looking good as new, and the fabric has never stained. I wish all our baby stuff washed up like this seat.
We have friends with babies who have different bouncy seats, and my husband and I are so glad we have this one. It's a little deeper than the others we've seen, with higher sides, so our son seems (to us) to be more secure. The seat is positioned deeply enough that he's able to really move his legs, which isn't the case with others we've tried. The metal base is a little wider than the seat, with rubber corners, so the whole thing is very stable -- again, more so than others we've seen. The weight balance makes us more comfortable picking up the seat with our son in it than we do with other bouncers. The safety restraint is excellent.
And, most importantly, my son can really make himself BOUNCE in this thing!! :o)
Customer Review: Great bouncer, great service Summary: 5 Stars
When our boy was first brought home this was a life saver for us. It was the one place that he would sleep on a consistent basis. We left the toy bar off when he was very young. Once he started to get a little older he would swat the animals on the toy bar and bounce a lot. When he started to get enough coordination to grab the rings and pull the lion to make noises, the lion stopped working. This happened to be after some older cousins were pulling on it, so that may have been a factor. When I contacted Fisher-Price they sent out a replacement free of charge and very quickly. As soon as I hung up I told my wife the experience with Fisher-Price is how all companies should model their customer service. I may have just been lucky, but the rep was professional, helpful, and without a long wait to talk with someone. Now that my son is a little older (over 5 months) he is more active, but still crawls over to it and likes when the vibrator is turned on. He just holds onto it and feels the fabric. Sometimes he tries to eat it too. :-) The vibration probably feels good against his gums.
The main con for this was getting to the battery compartment. Getting the fabric over the bar was frustrating most the time. The toy bar was not the easiest to take off sometimes, but that's being picky.
Customer Review: Eh, it's ok. Summary: 2 Stars
For a bouncy seat, it does the job. However, as a first time Mom there are a few things I would have reconsidered. Our little one is a bit over 5 months old and has been using this since she was first born.
First, the pros to this seat:
1. It's colorful and sturdy.
2. It's lightweight.
3. It vibrates.
4. It's affordable
5. It's washable
Next, the cons:
1. For a newborn/infant - I felt that the head support was only so-so. I added a detachable head support for the first several weeks because our baby's head kept falling to the side.
2. It's absolutely impossible to maneuver your baby into the seat WITH the mobile bar attached without hitting your child in the head/face with the hard molded plastic mobile toys.
3. The seat doesn't play any music - which our baby really would have loved. The middle mobile toy (the lion) rotates between a really wussy purr and a VERY short song. It's a shame the song isn't longer.
4. If you baby is at all active, she will just kick the hard bottom of the seat where the on/off switch is.
Would I buy this seat again? I don't think so - I'd search for a better alternative that plays music.
Customer Review: Perfect from Birth-3mos...at least. Summary: 4 Stars
This was a gift from my registry and I really got a lot of use out of it.
My little one wasn't keen on the vibrating option or the hanging toys and never napped in it like others report, but he loved the supported angle at which he could sit during his first 3 months.
He was always by my feet in this chair watching me as I cooked, typed, cleaned, dried my hair, whatever.
Once he reached about 23.5 inches (he was 21 at birth), his feet started hitting on the base bar. I rolled a burp diaper up under his toush and was able to let him use it through about 24.5inches.
He's now 19weeks and a hair over 25inches and we only really use it to stage his bath towels for whoever is pulling him from the bath. It's not practical for general use anymore because he hits his feet too hard on the base.
All that said, we really got a lot of use out of this and just about every other mom I've met who has one also sang its praises.
But bouncy chairs are like swings are like car seats are like any other baby holding contraption: some babies love them some babies hate them. My little man hated the swing and fusses with the car seat. Go figure.
