Baby Products Reviews of Fisher-Price: Peek-A-Rounds Jungle Friends TreehouseCustomer Review: Limited activity and very loud! Summary: 2 Stars
I was very excited to purchase this toy for my son, who loved the Roll-a-rounds Swirlin' Surprise Gumball Machine. I was looking for something else he can use the roll-a-rounds with, and the age recommendation is up to 2 years. He just turned one before Christmas, and received this toy as a gift at Christmas. The short story is that I am very glad I found this toy on sale and didn't pay full price!
Based on the description, I thought that there would be lots of fun activities for him to do. The set comes with some roll-a-round balls, but you can use any others that you have as well. There is an off switch, and there are 2 volume settings. The switch is on the bottom, so it isn't very convenient and I usually just leave it on. The assembly was very easy, and the instructions are well written. My son was able to play with the toy within minutes of opening the box (which is always a plus!).
For all that's listed in the description, I have found that there are really only two activites - either putting the ball into the tree so that it rolls down and starts the spinning and music, or pressing the big red button to start/stop the spinning and music. Opening and closing the door to see the monkey in the tree got old pretty quickly (though my son will now say "oo oo oo" when he sees a monkey!). In my opinion, the dragonfly spinner and butterfly slider are not really "activities".
My son plays with this toy for short periods of time. It didn't take him long to figure out that he can put the balls into the hole and watch them roll down. There is no way for baby to decide which way the ball will roll (over the waterfall or over the bridge), so I think that interests him a little bit. He also figured out that he can make it stop by pushing the red button. We spend time together talking about the animals and the sounds they make (which is why it got 3 stars for educational value), but on it's own I don't think it teaches much more than cause and effect.
I have been disappointed by several things about the toy. First, the toy is LOUD! When the balls get spinning, you can't hear the music even when it is set on high. It's not that I mind the noise, necessarily, but the music and animal sounds were one of the features I liked when I purchased the toy. Secondly, there is really not much to do other than put a ball in the hole. When I read the description, I thought there would be more to it. Now that we have it, I am a little disappointed with the actual features. Third, the spinners are already starting to show wear. My son does not play with this toy very often, but where they balls spin the sticker is starting to wear off. I wouldn't mind if this was a well-loved toy, but he has only had it for a month! Fourth, I think that my son is too old for this toy. The age recommendation was from 6 months to 2 years, so I thought he would be right on target at one year. He has played with this toy for short periods of time since Christmas, and is pretty much finished with it. That might be because he recently started walking and doesn't enjoy sit-down toys as well anymore. I think I would recommend this for a baby who is starting to sit on her/his own and is looking for ways to make things happen!
