Baby Products Reviews of Fisher-Price Papasan Cradle Swing - Nature's Touch N1973Customer Review: Highly recommended Summary: 5 Stars
I am a first time mom to a three month old son, and a family member bought him this swing. It is without a doubt his favorite thing and the only place he is happy for any length of time outside of mommy's arms. We put him in it and he immediately starts smiling and cooing, and after playing for awhile usually peacefully falls asleep.
The swing's strongest attributes are its cozy seat (roomy, so makes baby feel nice and snuggled without feeling confined), the mirror above baby's head, and the music it plays--it is less shrill and tinny than most baby-toy music, a bit fuller sounding and thus much less annoying. Someone else noted that it swings very fast. I think there are a good variety of settings, but I like that it is able to go fast because my little speedracer loves the high speed. Also, baby *loves* the side-to-side motion, so even if you don't buy the papasan style, I highly recommend going with a swing that has that feature.
I would say the negatives are the bland coloring; nice for blending in with the living room, but it isn't as visually interesting for baby as the Ocean Wonders swing appears to be. I like the removable toy bar but the toys are not all that visually interesting either. Finally, the mirror is so fantastic but the cozy headrest may make baby less able or inclined to stare up at himself--my son does it at times but not as much as I would have expected.
I would say overall this swing is more soothing than stimulating, which is fine because you can always add more toys /colors to the environment, but it is harder to create a really secure and comfy spot for baby. I can't say enough great things about this swing!
Customer Review: Absolute lifesaver... Summary: 5 Stars
This swing is my daughters favorite place in the whole world (apart perhaps from her Dad's arms!)... and it always has been. Our daughter is now 4 months old, but we bought this swing when she was 5 weeks, and I must say this was the most worthwhile $130 I have EVER spent. It is sooo comfortable and there is very little negative I can say about it. Amy, our daughter was colicky up till 10 weeks, and although at times nothing would console her, this swing was always our best bet. She just relaxes with the side-to-side movement... she much prefers this than front-to-back, but it is good to have the option. The shape of the cradle means she feels secure and comfortable and the tunes are soft and relaxing. She doesn't seem a big fan of the nature sounds, and yes, its true, all she sees of the overhead mobile are the l'il critters feet... but really the pros outweigh the cons - I attach Tiny Love toys from the mobile and that adds more interest. It is true that the swing mechanism clunked and clicked a little more than I thought it would, but if anything Amy likes the rhythmic sound it makes, so it turns out to be a bonus!!. Before I bought this cradle swing, I borrowed a standard swing from a friend (I think it was Evenflo) swing and there is no comparison - the side-to-side movement seems much more soothing for newborns, and they can lie/sit in a much nicer position. This is the Mercedes-Benz of swings and in my opinion worth every penny. Now that Amy is more interactive and likes to grasp at objects the toy bar is becoming another firm favorite... again it is easy to clip other toys and rattles onto the loops of the bar. I cannot recommend this swing more highly... GET IT!!
Customer Review: Absolutely wonderful swing for swing-napping baby! Summary: 5 Stars
My son is now 8 months old (and ~19lbs) and still needs his swing most days for naptime (sometimes with the motion on and sometimes just with the "mobile" on) -- We have tried and tried to have him sleep in his crib with very minimal success. Anyway, this swing has been wonderful for him.
We did start off with the F-P Aquarium swing, but he seems to like this one better. It is immensely easier to get your swing-napper in and out of the Papasan swing than the Aquarium one... which can be a critical factor if baby falls asleep in your arms (or while nursing) before you've managed to get them in the swing! My son seems to also enjoy the Papasan "mobile" more than the Aquarium swing -- he hardly gave the fish much notice but loves to watch the moving leaves, bird, and bugs on the Papasan.
I do want to mention that we've NEVER had a problem with the motor smoking or starting on fire... and in our house this swing is used a lot!!! Plus, F-P has really, really good customer service for their swings -- when the bird on our Papasan mobile stopped moving for some reason they sent us out a whole new motor housing unit free of charge (so now... I always have a backup to keep this swing in action!).
So, overall... I am extremely pleased with this swing. Speeds and sounds are just fine and it doesn't seem to eat batteries the way others have. While our Aquarium one still gets used by our son at daycare, I have to admit that were I to do it all over again... I would just buy the Papasan style. It seems that he is more comfortable in the Papasan seat and still has room to grow (... while we sloooowly transition him to a crib). ;)
Customer Review: This swing is great! Summary: 5 Stars
Although I've never owned a swing before, I have to say that we have really liked this one. The colors blend so well with our home so it really helps keep the cluttered look down. I work from home and used this for our son's naps each day until he was about 5 months old (at which point I had to switch to his crib as all he wanted to do was socialize! I do agree that it rocks way too fast and we were scared in the beginning, but I would simply turn it off after it got going and he would usually fall asleep before it stopped rocking...and stay asleep for about 2-3 hours at a time(The book 'Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child' recommends that children get better sleep if they do not sleep in motion anyway). Additionally, I didn't want him to get used to rocking while sleeping and then not be able to sleep in his crib at night. Therefore, the fast rocking was not an issue for us and once he got heavier, it wasn't a problem. The different music/nature sound choices are great and he really likes the mirror/mobile. I also agree with the reviewer who stated 7 minutes is too short. I'm glad it shuts itself off (or I would probably forget like I do for the bouncer chair we have) but 15-20 minutes might have been better. Our mobile just stopped working, but I called the customer service number today and they are going to send me a new one. Now that he is 7 months, we still use the swing for short periods while getting meals or bottles ready. Since I hadn't used the toy tray previously, he does enjoy playing with it while he waits. He is a very tall baby and will soon outgrow it, but we've gotten much use out of this swing. It is definitely worth the money.
Customer Review: Great swing, amazing customer service Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this swing just under a year ago, when our baby was about two months old. She LOVED this swing and was either asleep in it, or just peacefully playing and looking around the room at us. Now she is 14 months and has not used it for awhile, so two months ago friends bought it from us for their newborn son.
They used it only two months, when one day they turned it off and smoke started coming out of the motor compartment. The batteries were intact, but the swing didn't work whatsoever anymore, even with new batteries.
I called Fisher Price, and they were very concerned about the smoke. I didn't have the purchase receipt anymore, and wasn't sure if it was still covered by the warranty. They asked for the Product Code and Run Code, and where I bought it (Babies R Us). They are now sending me a brand new motor housing (the entire top portion of the swing, which you just attach the legs to). They are also sending a pre-paid label to put on the box, so I can send them the dead motor housing. How great is that!
I am so impressed and amazed by Fisher Price's customer service. No receipt, and still they are totally helping me out and basically replacing the swing. Talk about gaining customer loyalty! It's good to know you can pay $130 for a baby item and get your money's worth all around.
The swing itself is just wonderful. The motor is quiet, my baby loved the moving bugs, and the two swinging directions offers a nice change for the baby. The swing's colors are great as well, soothing and neutral, instead of the usual super bright primary colors on most other swings.
