Baby Products Reviews of Fisher-Price Learning Patterns RockerCustomer Review: Best Gift Ever!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
My mother got me this great seat when my 2nd daughter was just a month old. Our baby liked to be held all the time and would not take a nap unless somebody was holding her. Don't get me wrong I love to cuddle with her but trying to clean or do anything with one hand all the time can be very, very challenging. This seat put an end to that right away! Because of the design it is almost like a baby hammock. She felt safe and secure, allowing me to get some chores done or take a nap myself!
Now that my daughter is 6 months old we absolutely adore this chair! At first she just sat in it. Now that she is getting better control of her hands she loves to reach for the toys on the toy bar. You can switch around the toys if you like or use different ones. You can also clip toys to the sides of the baby and on the front harness if you don't want to use the toy bar.(great for younger babies) The rocking motion came in handy while I was cooking dinner. I just put the seat near me and gently rocked it with my foot, keeping her happy and getting dinner on the table. The seat cover is very easy to take off and wash in the washing machine. It reclines for younger babies and sits up more for older children. It also has a stablizing bar so you can stop it from rocking. This has come in very handy since we do not have a highchair yet and have been eating solid food for awhile now. She seems to like the bright contrasting colors, though it may not match my decor it is well worth it! It does have a vibrate mode and I have only replaced the batteries once. I think as long as you remember to shut it off when not in use you will not have to replace them frequently.
Overall I look forward to using this chair for quite some time since it converts into a chair for toddlers. I have nothing negative to say about this chair, Even the price was very reasonable! If you or someone you know is expecting a baby go out and get this. It is well worth the investment!
Customer Review: Great-UNTIL 7-8 months Summary: 3 Stars
I have the previous version of this seat, recieved as a gift for my third baby. It is just about the same except the toy bar. I loved the seat when my baby was newborn, I was able to keep him in it and calm him with the vibrations and know he was safe off the floor with two older brothers running around. All was well until one day, at 8 months old, my son was able to shimmy himself up, push off with his legs, and fall out of the chair. I thought that it really must just be that my son was a very flexible baby, that was very determined to chase his brothers around. But needless to say, that was the end of its use in the house until my fourth son was born. We used the chair again and I didn't anticipate that my new baby would be able to get out of it the way his brother did. But, right on time, at 8 months, he squirmed and pushed and got out. I can not emphasize enough the importance of having 5-point harnesses on EVERY piece of equipment you buy for your baby. My third son was also able to get out of his 3-point harness stroller at 8 months and we had to buy a new one with a 5-point harness. Our highchair is now with a 5-point harness (Combi Easy-glider deluxe, which can be used as a play chair as well. Highly recommended!)and I feel much safer knowing he's secure. New mothers, save yourself the trouble of finding out the hard way. Buy equipment with 5-point harnesses. If I had to do it again I would buy the COMBI rocker- pricier than others, but above and beyond the others for safety. The reason for the three stars is that it definately has its use up to the point of crawling, and has its use after the point of walking as a toddler rocking chair. But I would avoid it during the period between crawling and walking, unfortunately this is the time frame that sometimes need the chair most, during those times that mom has to attend to other things.
Customer Review: GET IT! Summary: 4 Stars
I'm a first-time mom at 40 & I received this item as a shower gift. I wasn't too sure about it at first, it seemed a bit large for my daughter (even though she was 9.7 lbs at birth & 21"), but with the use of a head-positioner I found it to work similar to a cradle. At her nap time, my daughter would fall asleep in my arms & I would just ease her into the seat (with the kickstand out, with the arch of toys off & with the vibrate feature off). She stayed asleep for at least 1.5 - 2.5 hours at a time. Maybe she felt cradled since the sides come up a bit.
She didn't care for the vibrating feature until around 3 months, but I like to believe it helped/helps her when she's gassy. She wasn't interested in the arch of toys until about 3 months. She's now 5 months old, easily falls asleep in the seat on her own, and loves the toys (which can be switched with some of her other "link-type" toys).
This item is easy enough for me to carry between the upstairs & downstairs (without her in it of course), so since my daughter likes me within her sight, she stays a lot less fussy for a longer period of time, since she can see me whether I'm working in the office upstairs, or while I'm making dinner downstairs.
I've just started putting up the kickstand and using the rocker feature, as I wanted to wait until she was able to support her own head before rocking her too far forward. The buckled restraint seams comfortable for her and is easy for me to fasten/unfasten. I haven't used the rocker to its full potential yet & can't really say how effective it will be durring her toddler years, so I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5, but if it's as useful as it's been so far, I have a feeling that my daughter and I are BOTH going to be enjoying this one until she reaches the rockers' 40 pound weight limit!
Customer Review: Don't buy this chair! Summary: 2 Stars
I received this chair at my baby shower, and initially I loved it. Recently though, the rubbon attaching one of the toys to the toy bar came apart and my son's hand got caught in the fibres - a definite choking risk, if not a strangulation risk! This chair was returned to Fisher Price and I bought another one.
My 8-month-old son managed to tip the second chair over within 24 hours by sitting forward to suck his toes, which meant that he landed face-first on my kitchen floor with the chair still attached to his butt!! Fisher Price informed me that the chair isn't suitable for children able to sit forward (i.e. about 8 months) until they are able to sit in it themselves without the straps with their feet on the floor (about 18 months!). I was disgusted with this and returned this chair too! Bad marketing really since the main picture on the box shows a child of about 9 months playing happily with the toys on the toy bar!
I now have the 2005 version of this chair. The seating position is subtly different so that the child sits lower, making the center of gravity lower and the chair more stable, and the front of the rockers are fitted with bump stops. Even when my son leans right forward to suck his socks, the chair isn't anywhere near the tipping point. I know because I experimented with the demo model in Babies R Us before paying for a new chair!
On the minus side of the new chair, the method of attaching toys to the toy bar has changed - instead of velcro loops it is fitted with velcro straps so that you can only attach the toys that come with the chair, unless you modify it by adding your own loops to accomodate link-a-doos or similar rings.
Don't waste you money on the Learning Patterns model, spend a few bucks more and get the safer (in my opinion!) 2005 version!
Customer Review: Wonderful haven for infants Summary: 4 Stars
We received this as a birth gift for our son, who is now one year old. It was wonderful watching him grow with this chair. At first, it was a snuggly hammock where he spent some of his more restless naps and nights. The vibrating feature was great for calming him, and we could rock the chair to help him get to sleep, then leave him safely buckled in.
What was superior about this chair, as compared with the typical bouncy seat, is that when the kickstand is up, it is not on as steep an incline. This means it can be used by younger infants, even when they aren't great at holding their heads up. With bouncy seats, their heads tend to flop over.
Eventually he began batting at and grabbing the toys on the toy bar, which helped keep the chair interesting enough that he'd remain calm while I took a shower, checked e-mail, etc. This chair was one of those priceless items we would pack up and take with us when we travelled so he'd have a familiar place to hang out, wherever we were.
So for those first 6 months, this chair was definitely a winner. But since he's gotten more active, he is not content to sit there for long at all, and when he tries to sit forward, it does appear that the chair might tip over (though it never has). The one remaining thing I find useful about it is that it's a good place to buckle him in when I need to trim his fingernails. It keeps him still if I put the kickstand up.
I'm not getting rid of it yet. I am hoping that when he reaches an age that he's willing to sit still at all, this chair will be a place he enjoys. (My sister-in-law has the same chair and said her 4-year-old still enjoys it.)
