Baby Products Reviews of Evenflo Triumph Advance LX Convertible Car Seat - AshburnCustomer Review: unacceptably difficult to use rear-facing in a sienna but good forward-facing Summary: 3 Stars
Update [Feb 2011]
For several months now, we've been using our two seats forward-facing, and this has provided an enormous improvement in usability. I still would not give them 4 stars because (a) They are a pain to install/move, so much so that we usually make an adult passenger squeeze between the captain's chairs into the bench seat in back, rather than move a car seat and let the adult sit closer to the front; (b) I often have to use both knobs to tighten the straps sufficiently; (c) sometimes it's difficult to push the tab to start loosening the straps (though all the hints in the other reviews do help -- read them). Aside from those issues though, this seat works well when forward-facing and our kids seem comfortable in it. The shoulder strap height is ridiculously easy to adjust, the fabric is easy to clean (still looks new), and getting the kids in and out is generally fairly easy.
On average however, I'd still give this no more than 3 stars, because the seat was the bane of our existence when used rear-facing, and rear-facing is supposed to be a supported configuration. My original review still stands for rear-facing use of the seat and I still do NOT recommend it for rear-facing, at least not in a Sienna.
Original review [Dec 2009]
After all the positive reviews, we confidently bought this child seat at a brick-and-mortar store that had it (in another color) on sale. Our twins are *almost* 20 pounds, and are getting a bit long and a bit squashed in their Chicco Keyfit 30 seats, which we've loved except for two facts: we don't see how the kids will be comfortable in them 10 pounds from now; they didn't fit the twin stroller frame we bought (and returned). So on to the Evenflow Triumph Advance DLX. We installed two of them today in our Sienna, which has two captain's chairs behind the driver and passenger, rear-facing.
First, the installation was a royal pain. Let's just say many swear words were involved in the process and that those seats are never going to be moved from the captain's chairs to the bench in back, like our old ones were when my FIL traveled with us. Strike one: installation is way too difficult.
This afternoon we brought out the kids to take them for a spin in their new seats. The good news is that the kids definitely fit in them better than the Chicco. Also, because the Evenflow sits up a bit higher on its base, the kids could look out the side windows a little, which I think they'll appreciate during daylight hours.
But strike two: getting a child in the seat is a painful chore. Those convenient little knobs, which worked so easily in the store? They butt right up against the car's seat back when the child seat is rear-facing. Yes, we could recline the car seat a bit to alleviate the space problem, but then the child seat wobbles much more because the foot of it doesn't have anything stable to rest against. So as long as the seat is upright, to turn the plastic knob to tighten the straps, you have to dig your hand -- hard -- into the upholstery and turn as hard as you can. In 20 degree weather with no gloves, doing so causes great discomfort. I found I had to stand in the van (bent over so I didn't bump my head), lean way over my child, rest my forehead against the car seat back, and try to turn both knobs simultaneously, to get sufficient leverage. Then step back out of the van, adjust the straps so the harness is properly positioned, then stand back up to tighten some more. Repeat 3-4 times until the straps are sufficiently tightened.
Strike three: getting a child out of the seat is just as bad. The release button is a lever on the knob. And the knob is jammed against the car seat back. And you have to push the lever really hard until it clicks, hold it down, and spin the knob to release the tension on the harness. With one hand. With a screaming child in your face.
The only reason I didn't give this product one star is because we haven't tried it forward-facing. I have high hopes that the seat will be easier to use in that position. But if you're planning to buy this product to use rear-facing in a Sienna, DON'T.
