Baby Products Reviews of Evenflo Top of Stair GateCustomer Review: Great Gate! Summary: 5 Stars
If you give this gate a bad review you haven't installed it properly! We have used ours at the top of the stairs in 3 different houses and it's the only gate I trust with my monkey of a 2 year old. He can't get over it no matter how hard he tries, and he does try! I love that it retracts when you open it, I can swing it against the wall and out of the way when I don't need to use it. It's VERY sturdy and I have no problem operating ours with one hand. I've never pinched myself. I think some people must be installing the cups in the wrong configuration if the bottom of the gate is sliding out... it won't do that if you put them in the correct position. My husband had no trouble installing the gate at any of our homes. We're getting another one for the kitchen downstairs. The doorframe isn't quite square (neither is the stairway) and pressure gates are useless in that situation!
Customer Review: The wood is too flimsy! Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this gate for the top of our stairs based on the great reviews it received. My husband installed it with little trouble, although he did have to get drywall anchors for the screws as their weren't studs nearby.
However, one installed, we could tell the gate just wasn't sturdy enough to really feel comfortable with. The wood rungs are very thin and bendable. Our baby is 10 months old, and while he couldn't do any damage to it now, I'm concerned a wood slat could snap when he gets older (maybe 18 mos).
Also, we have a 5 year old who will be using the gate, and I'm not comfortable with the idea of him putting any weight onto this gate as he's using it, I feel it could easily break.
We're retuning this item.
I think it's a fine gate for other household areas, but I wouldn't trust it for the top of the stairs.
Customer Review: Love It, Love It, Love It Summary: 5 Stars
I put this gate up yesterday to keep my daughter from crawling into the kitchen when I wasn't looking. I had actually put off doing this because I thought it was going to be such a pain to have to open the gate every time I wanted to go in the kitchen.
This gate is SO EASY to install - easier than any other gate I've ever seen! And it's a snap to open and close - a truly hands free gate.
My daughter is an enthusiastic climber and she can not climb this gate or shake this gate loose (she tried really hard too - she loves to go in the kitchen and play in the dog's water dish).
The only negative thing I can say about it is that you can't use it on the stairs. And the only reason I say that is because I hate the gate we currently have at the top of our stairs and I wish I could put one of these there.
Hope this helps!
Customer Review: Great for my home childcare!! Summary: 5 Stars
When we were looking at getting gates, we purchased the ones that do not mount at all, and went through countless ones as kids were easily getting them open, or ramming into them with toys and pushing them over (yes, I had them as tight as possible). When our oldest son finally started walking, we looked at getting something more permanent. We were lucky enough to just walk into babies r us and pick this one out! We have loved it. With my daycare kids (I had 6 kids in my home 5 days a week...most of whom could walk, climb, etc..) this gate never let us down!! We love it so much that we purchased another one for at the top of our deck outside. We put some spray paint style water sealer on it, and it is working fantastic. I would recommend this gate to anyone that has small children, it was a life saver for not only my daycare kids but my own two boys as well!!
Customer Review: Pleasantly Surprised Summary: 4 Stars
I considered purchasing this gate, but wasn't 100% sure about it. After searching 5 local stores and reading many online reviews, we decided to go ahead and give it a try as everything else was plastic and pressure mounted.
This gate was not a mistake. By just looking at the photo it doesn't look like it would be very sturdy but after my husband installed it and we gave it a small "beating" to see how it responded, we were amazed, it barely moved. I feel completely confident with this gate and am sure that the only way you could be disappointed with it is if you installed it incorrectly (which is usually the case of most any bad review)
It took a little getting used to opening and closing it at first, but what new item doesn't?! But there is no problem using it one handed with the other arm full.
Don't pass this one up!
