Baby Products Reviews of Evenflo Top of Stair GateCustomer Review: Very good gate but not perfect Summary: 4 Stars
We have a 1 yr old and 4yr old. Our safety 1st hands free gate is prssure mounted and we couldn't trust it to hold the weight of both boys hanging on it. We decided on this one. It looks nice and is very sturdy. However, my older son is used to his independence with the old gate but now has to call for help getting up or down the stairs (sometimes good, mostly not - esp. when he wakes before us and gets himself stuck). He can close it ok, but cannot open it. He is very frustrated with his inability to help himself, and persistently tries to open, meaning he persistently calls for help. Also, every person who has worked this has pinched fingers at one time or another. Nothing major, but a sharp pain I'm usually careful to avoid, but when I'm tired, I'm not always careful to keep my fingers at the safest distance/angle.
I would recommend this gate, but be aware it is not perfect and depending on your family, may not be right for you.
Customer Review: great looking gate, works wonders! Summary: 5 Stars
This was the 3rd gate that we bought & tried at home. Finally we found a gate that works! It has a nice wood finish, so it looks so much better than the plastic or metal ones. Then, my husband actually got it mounted in minutes, which is great , considering that most home projects, take days, if not weeks to finish. Thirdly & most important, it was great for our 2 toddlers! Though it says 'Top of the Stair' i used it for our kitchen. Even with both of them hanging on, they can never bring it down. They cannot figure out how to open it, and best of all, since it has no holes like a lot of other gates do, they cannot climb over it. They have tried their best to hang on & rattle it, but it never comes off! Its so easy to open & close with one hand. When we first brought it home, I was sceptical it was going to last, but it did! I would recommend this for anyone who has active toddlers at home. It looks great, works well & is great Value for Money!
Customer Review: Our FAVORITE!! We have 3 of them!! Summary: 5 Stars
This gate is awesome! We have three of them and I (female) have installed them all myself with ease! It probably took me 15 minutes the first time and 10 minutes with the additional two we bought. And, the hardware is metal which is a huge plus! We had purchased a very pricey gate that had plastic hardware, and after replacing it three times I gave up and purchased this one. It comes with a template and it's simple to install - step by step instructions. As long as you line the gate up correctly (which is explained in the instructions) it opens and closes quickly and easily for adults, however my three children, the oldest of which is almost six, can't figure it out! And that's saying something because my three year old boy has figured out every contraption out there! We love it and I recommend it to everyone! Even when I'm in the store shopping and see people looking at gates I recommend it to them. Buy it! You'll LOVE it!!
Customer Review: Better than most Summary: 4 Stars
Well, this is the 5th different gate we've tried and I have to say, by most standards, it is better than the other 4 varieties we've tried. It is quite sturdy (my 19 month old daughter likes to hang from it in our dining room and it's no worse for wear yet) definitely the most attractive one we've had yet, and I've had no problem with her figuring out how to open it. I also really like that it truly is able to be opened with one hand!!! The only two things I didn't really like about it, are that it is a little difficult to get the mounting hardware positioned *just* right, even with the template, and I have been able to jimmy the bottom brace out of the bracket when I work at it (my daughter hasn't, however, even for all her climbing on it.) Even with those two things withstanding, I'm planning to buy two more to replace the rest of the gates in our house, because this one is by far the most secure I've found yet.
Customer Review: Much Better Than Plastic Pressure Fits Summary: 4 Stars
This is a much better gate than the plastic varieties. I did encounter two issues when installing this gate. Firstly, there were no studs in the wall where I needed to mount it. Secondly, the width of the baseboards meant that the bottom mounting brackets were 3/4's of an inch on each side closer than the top ones. I managed to solve both these issues by screwing 3/4 inch strips of plywood into the wall studs, then bolting (not screwing) the top brackets to the ply. Screwing the ply to the studs was sufficient because all of the pressure that our little guy would put on the gate would be at right angles. Bolting the brackets and using washers prevents it from tearing out. I am suprised that the manufacturer did not include alternative mounting instructions, considering every house I've ever seen has had some kind of baseboard. (Perhaps the wanted to avoid being sued, especially in the litigious-happy U.S of A.!)
