Baby Products Reviews of Evenflo Top of Stair GateCustomer Review: Baseboard Burden Summary: 2 Stars
I loved the look of this gate, but installing was a nightmare if you have nice tall baseboards (which I do). It was so frustrating for my husband that 30 minutes into trying to figure out how we were going to get the gate on strait with the baseboard in the way, he was so frustrated with the install design that he packaged it up and took it back to the store. We could not put the gate above our baaseboards because it was to high off the ground and our daughter would slide under and get stuck or hurt. We couldn't drill into our baseboards because there was no way for us to line up the gate afterwards (our baseboards stick out from the wall too far). The designer of this product should get a clue based on so many other reviews about difficult installation and make some changes to their product that will allow a gate to be installed over baseboards. Who likes drilling into their baseboards anyway? All that evenflo would have to do is raise the mounting bars on the bottoms of each side by a few inches and it would work much easier for people with baseboards (which is most of the population).
Customer Review: Great gate for the BOTTOM of the stairs! It's REMOVEABLE! Summary: 5 Stars
I actually love having this gate at the BOTTOM of our stairs! My 15 month old daughter rarely climbs the stairs now, but we often have other children over that do. With hard tile at the bottom of the stairs, a tumble would be bad. I wanted a gate at the bottom of the stairs, but not an eyesore that was in the way all the time when not in use.
We tried the soft and wide gate and another pressure-mounted gate, but those are a pain... it takes a lot of time to get them in place securely (kids are rough and can knock or pull them down easily) and then if you want to go up the stairs once you have it in place, you have to climb over it all the time! Not practical...
What I love about this gate is that it slides right off of the hinges and stores away in the closet when not in use! The wall-mounted parts are very small and hardly noticeable when the gate is stored away. Then, when I need the gate, it takes less than a minute to get it out and slide it back into place.
This gate is a life-saver for play group days! I highly recommend this gate.
Customer Review: Awesome Stair Gate Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent gate. It installed easily and works fabulously. I'm not sure what other reviewers were complaining about. If you install the gate on studs in the wall it is very secure, and I thought the template was just fine. It opens and closes very easily and the best part is it stays flush with the wall when not in use. This is great because it doesn't gradually swing back into the staircase like other gates I have used before. You have the option to let it swing open in either direction or lock it to operate only one way. I don't find any need to remove it when not in use since it stays flush with the wall.Yes, a 2 year old MAY be able to figure out how to open it, but would you really leave them alone? Besides A STAIR gate is used as a safety precaution so they don't fall down the stairs, not to kennel them into an area. Besides, at 12months+ you begin to teach your child rules. I have a 1 yr and 3yr old and its great.I don't allow them to climb and play on it, it's just a precaution to use while i am in the same general area with them.I highly recommend this product.
Customer Review: A good choice Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased two of these gates a couple of months ago when we moved into a new house that has an upstairs. We put one at the top of the steps and the other at the bottom. My husband said they were fairly easy to install. He designed a little contraption similar to a kit we saw in a kids' catalog that prevents you from having to drill the banister. It works beautifully and with two active little boys, ages 1 and 3, the gate has proven to be quite sturdy and climb-proof. Plus, the wood looks a lot better than the metal and plastic gates. I have found it easy to open with one hand, though it's not too easy. My three-year old still has a hard time with it, which is good. I also like that it slides and swings, but that you can control which way it swings, so that it doesn't open up to the stairs. After reading other reviews of this gate and others, doing research on the safety and quality, and actually installing and using these gates on our own, we have been most satisfied with our purchase and would recommend these gates to others.
Customer Review: Wonderful sturdy gate! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to put at the bottoom of my stairs to keep my 16 month old daughter from going upstairs without supervision. I previously had a pressure mounted gate, which was awful because she was able to knock it down and go up anyway. She can't knock this down!
It's very sturdy and easy to install. I did it myself in about 10 minutes and I am not a handy person. It was extremely easy. The only problem I had is that the lower mounting piece ended up just in the sheetrock and not the stud, and it's coming a little loose, but that's my fault and not the gate's. I'm sure it will be easy to fix.
I have no trouble closing it. The bottom rung slides easily into the mounting hardware with one hand. If I'm in the room, sometimes I don't even latch the top part because by now, my daughter has given up on this gate. She knows it won't open, so she never goes near it anymore.
I'm going to buy another one for the top of my basement stairs.
