Baby Products Reviews of Evenflo Top of Stair GateCustomer Review: I replaced all my gates with this one. I love it! Summary: 5 Stars
I thought my hands free gates were the best ones ever until I got one of these. I don't miss the handsfree feature because this gate opens easily with one hand and is stable enough to rest a laundry basket or whatever on it. I have four dogs that must be separated at all times and we live in a split level house. This is the sturdiest gate I've seen...and I've had a lot of them since my "kids" don't ever outgrow them. I feel absolutely confident when my nieces are visiting as well. I have them at the tops of my stairs. I ordered extra brackets (very inexpensive) from Evenflo so that I could move another one between bedrooms depending on my needs without having to buy multiple gates. It's hard to tell from the photo but there are 4 brackets. On the "hinge" side they are approx. 1"x2" and practically flat. On the other side they're maybe 1-1/4"x3" and come out about 3/4". The gate slides up and out of the brackets so it can be easily be moved or removed by an adult. I think the brackets are pretty inconspicous when not in use as they fit in the door frame without interfering with opening and closing the doors. The gates blend in with different decors. I wouldn't anticipate ever having to replace these so I'm not sure what other reviewers are talking about, I have a 70lb dog come to the top of the steps and jump up on it at least 3-4x a day and I might tighten the screws a couple times a year. In case you can't tell, I highly recommend this gate.
Customer Review: Great Gate! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this gate. We have a split level home with two sets of stairs going up, one set going down. I only bought two gates, but I bought two EXTRA sets of hardware (only [money] apiece on the company's website!), one for the downstairs family room (so baby can't go UP those stairs) and one for the kitchen. I easily move the gates to wherever I need them. For starting newell posts that don't fit any gate height, I bought a 3' tall piece of oak and stained it to match my railings. Screwed it into the newell, will just patch those tiny holes when the gates are gone for good, then installed the gate on that piece of wood. Got a thick (2") oak banister to screw into the stud for an area at the top of the stairs where the landing newell wasn't even with the wall. For top-of-the-stairs installation on ANY gate you need to screw into wood, not just drywall or it isn't safe. Now our setup is safe and it's pretty, since I stained the wood to match. I don't think you can stain the gate though, it has a safe, non-toxic coating on it and you wouldn't want to mess with sanding that off or anything.
Only drawback is it took several weeks before my 4-1/2 year old learned to operate the latch. I've actually decided the difficulty of the latch (it's not hard once you get used to it)is a huge benefit, because people or kids new to our house cannot operate it without help and thus leave it open, leaving a dangerous open stair.
Customer Review: Sturdy Top of Stairs Gate Summary: 4 Stars
After reading the other reviews, I chose and installed this gate at the top of the stairs to our finished basement. Like most of the other reviewers, I found the gate to be very sturdy when in the locked position and I feel safe that my 13 month-old daughter will not be able to break through it, climb over it, or figure out how to open it for quite a while yet anyway! Also I didn't have much trouble installing the gate by myself, although the directions weren't the greatest.
However this is the only gate rated for stairwells that I have examined and I have to say that I am very disappointed in the quality of the one-way swing mechanism. It consists of a little piece that screws into the top of the gate, where when it comes into contact with the top hinge, is supposed to keep the gate from opening into the stairwell. I found it to be very weak and mostly will pose only as a reminder not to try to open the gate that way. I would NOT trust it one bit to block my little one's fall, if she were to push against the unlocked gate. That is what I had hoped--that it would be a second-line of defense. (I believe it could not sustain a push of much greater than 5 or 10 pounds of force or a toddler could push right on through.)
The most important thing that I was looking for was for it to be secure when it was in the "locked" position and I DO feel good about that. So overall, I give the gate 4 stars.
Customer Review: THE BEST PURCHASE EVER!! Summary: 5 Stars
In our home we have the Eddie Bauer baby gate (not a big fan), but we needed a really safe sturdy gate for our summer cottage. The stairs are so steep I feel like I am climbing a ladder sometimes and with so many kids in and out of our home in the summer, my husband and I didn't want to take the chance of any accidents on our stairs. I researched so many baby gates, including the Kiddie Guard (expensive), but with so many positive reviews on this gate, I decided to give it a try. It is a pain to install. Warn daddies in advance to expect the worst when it comes to intallation. But the end result is SO worth it! It took my husband a few trips to the hardware store, but now that it is up, I love it and so does he!! It is super secure and sturdy. There is NO WAY any kids (even older kids)I know can get past this gate. My 22 month old daughter goes up to the gate and tries to shake it, the gate does not budge, doesn't even make a sound, it will not move unless a strong adult unlatches it. The price is so reasonable I thought it wouldn't be as good, but it is better. As for adults, it is simple to open and close and we have had no pinched hands at all. I am hard pressed to recommend anything to other moms, but this item is a winner. If you want a true "top of the stair" baby gate, this is a must have. This gate would work in many other parts of your house too. Evenflo has figured it out!
Customer Review: Budget price gate with 1st class quality Summary: 5 Stars
We've had this gate in use at home for a year. So why write a review now? Because we just replaced the gate.
My husband fell down the stairs this weekend. Thankfully he wasn't injured more than just a couple bruises. He did however break the closed baby gate at the bottom of the stairs when he fell against it. The gate didn't disengage, but a couple of the wooden slats on it were broken off the bottom railing.
Think about that folks; it took the weight of an adult man falling against the gate to cause it to break.
My toddler has stood on the bottom rail of the gate and shaken it numerous times in the past year. Never once has said toddler managed to open the gate or do damage to it.
Now don't you want something that sturdy in your home?
Best of all when the gate was broken this weekend a quick call to Babies-R-Us confirmed that they had a replacement in store. An hour later I'd driven to the store, purchased the gate, and installed the replacement into the existing undamaged wall bracket hardware. The second gate fit into the wall hardware exactly the same as the original gate had. I didn't need to fiddle or adjust any tension settings the way I have with other gates in the past.
For my money, this gate is one of the best on the market. Reliable every time and a great price.
