Baby Products Reviews of Evenflo Soft And Wide Gate Taupe & ChocolateCustomer Review: Works well, easy to set up and use Summary: 5 Stars
We have 4 gates keeping our son from all steps and stairs on the main floor. Our son is 9 months, crawling proficiently and starting to stand and try to walk along things. He is very big and strong for his age. The gates are tall enough to hold him, but at 5'6" I can comfortably step over them even with my arms full. The mesh is resistant to him pressing and scratching and so far he hasn't been able to push a bar out of place and move the gate.
My only complaint is that I can't find this gate in a smaller or larger version. We have doorways both smaller and larger I'd like to block off but the gate won't collapse or enlarge to fit them. But if it fits the space you want, I highly recommend this gate.
We have a wide staircase and the gate sturdily sits between two posts on one end and a post and a wall on the other. We have a third one that's also between a post and a wall but on an angle and we are very happy with how solidly that holds as well.
All in all, the gate is easy to put together and easy to adjust and use. But once you get it adjusted plan to just leave it wherever you set it up most of the time. It's easier in the long run to let it stay in its spot and buy several for their spots than move it and re-adjust it for different spots on a regular basis.
Customer Review: good for pets but don't expect to move it Summary: 4 Stars
this is a fine barrier if you have medium sized dogs, to keep them out of rooms with wide openings. It adjusts fairly easily by screwing or unscrewing the poles on top and/or bottom and, since it is adjustable, fits uneven or non-parallel openings no problem, up to about 60". the only "problem" is that it is NOT for you if you have difficulty climbing over (swinging your leg over) heights of about 25-30" or so. once you put it in place, you won't want to keep removing it, as that is difficult if you have the tension tight enough to keep it in place.
it does mark walls where the rubber caps are, mostly due to pressure. not a big deal if you intend to leave it in place.
it does warp if opened all the way after it has been used in a shorter space and then it is a bit of a two person wrestling job to keep top and bottom straight enough to tension it into place.
Overall, a good barrier, but not an opening gate. our three dogs cannot get thru it or tear it.
i would not suggest it for pregnant women, people with joint issues or difficulty stretching or swinging your leg up and over a height. if you have a toddler on the other side of this barrier you will either have to climb over, or lift them over to get them out of the presumably enclosed space.
Customer Review: Great adjustable, portable, soft gate at a great price! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought two of these to close off our living area for my crawling baby. He has since learned to stand up and these gates are holding up great. They seem to be very sturdy (my very strong 40+ lb. 4 year old has climbed over, stood on the bottom, kicked, pushed, etc. and the gates are still holding up!). I read reviews about the paint coming off the walls where the bumpers are but this has not happened to us so far. I think as long as you make sure to retract the sides a little before moving it, there should be no problem. The soft mesh material is great for when my little guy gets a little weepy being "trapped" on the other side - he won't hurt himself falling or leaning against this gate. I love that these are so versatile - I can used them practically anywhere, from I think 38" to 55" (can't remember the exact measurements), they are light, require no extra hardware, don't need a latch to open/close, etc. at 5'4" I can step over these fairly easily and my 4 year old can get over them with a little step stool on each side. I took a chance ordering these online without seeing in person, but after reading the reviews and seeing the price (and free shipping), I thought it was worth a shot. I'm very happy I got these and highly recommend them!
Customer Review: Great for large entryways and kitchens! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased 2 of these to block off my kitchen area. One side of my kitchen has a small recessed area under my cabinets so traditional wooden baby gates wouldn't work. When the 2 knobs at the top where locked in place, the bottom half of the gate would still swing back and forth because they had nothing to grip to. With this one, I can adjust the top and bottom to different widths.
Also, with other baby gates, my kids could scale them by sticking their toes in the holes on the plastic mesh. With these, they are a tightly knit mesh so there are no holes to stick their toes in! The mesh is also easy to remove for washing.
Another plus is that with the wooden gates, you may not be able to put the little indicator bar in the correct spot to adjust your pressue. This would sometimes cause it to be too tight and cracked one of my door frames. To me, the wooden gates had too many sharp and hard areas to be truly "safe."
I can't say enough good things about these gates! They have been a lifesaver (and sanity saver!) for us! I have 3 kids, ages 2-7 and have spent a LOT of money on baby gates. This is the only one that holds up to them and is well worth what I paid.
Customer Review: Difficult to install & use at maximum capacity Summary: 2 Stars
I thought this would be the perfect solution for a 59" doorway with no molding in my game room. It was very easy to put together at the smallest width and, based on a few tests that I performed, the tension seemed good and relatively easy to work with at that width.
However, when I expanded the gate to full capacity (instructions tell you that it should be at least 1/2 inch wider than doorway)the gate became very difficult to manipulate. I don't know if it was me or if the gate was defective, but regardless of how much I adjusted the length of the top and bottom bars I could not get them even and the gate was significantly lopsided/warped. Also, the longer I made the gate, the less flexible it became for compression to fit into the doorway. It took about 30 minutes before I could finally get it in with a good fit - and then it was still lopsided.
It was very strong when in place - my 11 month old attempted to climb it and it showed no signs of budging. However, when I tried (again) to fix the lopsided-ness, the gate popped loose leaving indentions in the drywall where it had been mounted. I returned this to the store the next day.
