Baby Products Reviews of Evenflo SimpleStep Pressure Gate TaupeCustomer Review: Great Gate Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased two of these gates to restrict a small two year old child who is coming to visit from entering a portion of my home that would have been a diaster from his spending a week with us. My son had first purchased one of these so that his child could not fall down a flight of stairs off of his nursery room. I helped him install it several months ago and was impressed with the ease of installation and how well it fit into the stair opening. The screw type adjustment with threaded studs (4) seem to really lock the gate in position without having to drill holes in a wall. It is a well thought out design with the expansion panel for larger door openings. A child's head or even a fairly large dog cannont get through the gate so it can be used for pets as well. All and all this is a great gate and I love the latching mechanism to swing open the gate. I have yet to have a child figure out how to open it.
Customer Review: Great Gate Summary: 5 Stars
It took me longer to get the gate out of the packaging than it did to set it up. I am very pleased with how easy it was to set up, how well it works, the stability (it doesn't wobble at all) and the speed of shipment. The gate is unobtrusive and I can still close my door, which is important since the gate is for my bedroom. I am using the gate for my dog (77 lbs) and am so glad that I don't have to set up chairs, etc. as a barrier anymore when I want her to stay in the room. This is much safer and looks and works much better. I haven't had any trouble opening and closing the gate with the handle. If you don't want the gate to close automatically (which I don't) and you don't mind opening it with your hand as opposed to your foot (in which case you can't close your door) this gate is perfect. I would definetly recommend this gate, especially for the price.
Customer Review: Good for the money Summary: 4 Stars
I found the gate easy to install and a good value for the money - I have another pressure-mount gate that I like better but it cost twice as much. We have this one in our bedroom doorway and I like that the profile is so slim that we can still close the door without removing the gate. The gate swings both ways which makes it easy to use, and the one-handed operation takes some getting used to but is doable. Like some reviewers said, in order to have the gate tight enough that your kid cannot yank it loose, it becomes so tight that you can't just push the gate closed. However, it is easy to hold the locking mechanism in as you close the gate, and I consider that to be an acceptable workaround. The gate is a nice neutral taupe that fits in with our color scheme - much better than the other offerings in this price range that are gaudy white plastic.
Customer Review: Just what we needed Summary: 5 Stars
This is just what we needed to keep our cats out of our daughter's bedroom! We don't need the extension, but we have it in case we need it for a later use.
The latch is pretty easy to use (once you read the instructions), not very loud, especially to open (in response to someone else's review, it does click shut more loudly, but still not "loud"). My 2.5 YO daughter can close it, but not open it. We did figure out that we can ALMOST close it (but not latch it closed), so that she can get in and out but the cats still think it's closed.
I installed it (I'm a fairly bright female, age 39) in about 7 minutes, including time for reading instructions.
I really like it, she tripped over it once, but that was it, she learened really fast. If I needed another one, I would definitely get this one again.
Customer Review: Difficult to open and close Summary: 3 Stars
We are using this gate more as a pet barrier than child gate. As a mother of 3 boys, I've installed lots of gates. This one does install very quickly. But I keep wondering if I've done something wrong... if I tighten the upper adjusters as tight as possible, it becomes much more difficult to open and close the gate.
As other reviewers have noted, it is not simple to open. You need to squeeze small buttons on opposite sides of the latch, then pull the handle back. I'm an average size woman, and I need two hands to do it. If I loosen the upper adjusters as the instructions indicate, so there is a 1/8" gap between the two sides of the latch, the gate is not as securely mounted. Ours is in a wood-framed doorway so good pressure is possible if it didn't make the latch so difficult to operate. Not sure if I'll be keeping it.
