Baby Products Reviews of Evenflo SimpleStep Pressure Gate TaupeCustomer Review: Bang for the Buck Summary: 4 Stars
Overall this is a good gate. I use it for a puppy, so it's a much more different experience for me than using it as a "baby gate".
The intstalation was easy. At first I thought the gate was broken becuase the latch didn't meet and the upper end stuck out farther than the lower ends. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE THAT WAY. I just want to make that clear. When you fasten it to the wall, the pressure pushes the top together so that it can latch.
Use of the product was a litlle hard. The latch requires you to push in two buttons (pinch them between your index and thumb) pull it to the side (left or right depending on a few things) WHILE holding the buttons. And pushing it forward or towards you. It sounds hard. And at first is. But you'll get the hang of it. Using 2 hands if you can makes it easier.
Quality of the product is great. It has withstood a lot. But keep in mind I have a 5 pund puppy not a 10+ pound child.
One other thing I MUST note is that there is a bar along the bottom that touches the floor. It is VERY easy to trip over. And when you do, it hurts. Don't let this factor alone deter you from buying this gate. It's a good and relativly inexpensive product and one of the only decent pressure mount gates out there that I could find.
Customer Review: it works if you can get it to work Summary: 3 Stars
it's hard to decide on how many stars to give to this product. I could've give it only 1 star for these reasons:
1. it's almost impossible to slide the locks to open the gate
2. once installed, the bottom of the gate (the part that opens) does not align with the frame. it stick out. this, however, does not affect the usability of the gate
I gave it 3 stars for these reasons:
1. it's the cheapest swing-open-pressure-mount gate i can find
2. After disassemble the sliding lock and oil and wax the inside of the lock, it becomes easy to open. BUT i don't recommand you to do so. there's 2 springs inside that jumps out when i disassemble the lock, and had a hard time knowing where to put the springs and assemble them back together
3. I used it for the bottom of the stair and it fits well with the included extension. I like the 'first year hands-free gate', which you open the gate by stepping on a foot-paddle. But it cannot be used for the bottom of my stairs because the wall of my stairs end where the steps end. I can only install a gate on the bottom step. You won't be able to reach the foot paddle if installed this way. also, it's $20 more than this one and I would need to buy an extra extension(another $15) for the same width
Customer Review: Excellent product! Summary: 5 Stars
We have this gate between our kitchen and living room and we LOVE it! We have used it for about 9 months so far (from the time my child could crawl through 15 months).
It opens in either direction and it will stay all the way open when you want it to, which is really nice for when your child is in bed and you don't need to gate closed. You push it shut behind you and it easily shuts on its own. It is extremely sturdy and durable. It never once came down and my son hangs from it like a monkey. The surface is easy to clean and it does not scratch or get marked up. There is no where for any fingers to get pinched, which was very important to me. There is nothing to step on for a kid to use to climb over. It is not hard to take down if you need to - or to put back up. You only need one hand to open it. Most adults coming to our house had to be shown how to open it once, but then they got it. It would be very hard for a toddler to figure out how to open it because there is a little button on each side of the latch that you squeeze with your thumb and fore finger while sliding the latch back. It would be very hard for a toddler to get their hand up and around the latch and squeeze with enough force, while sliding it back to get it open.
Customer Review: Still going strong after 7 months Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this gate to keep my newly adopted 2 year old yellow lab in the kitchen when I am not at home. I put it up in November 2007 and it's still working like a charm. Like other reviewers, I was very confused when I took it out of the box and saw that the top was splayed much wider than the bottom. I really thought it was broken, but as I started to mount it in the doorway I understood why it was like that. This gate is incredibly sturdy and strong, easy to open (once you understand how), and it keeps my dog in the kitchen when I'm not home. The bar across the bottom does cause some tripping, but once you get used to it, you learn to step over. And without the bar on the bottom the gate would not be nearly as effective. I strongly recommend this gate to anyone who wants a strong, sturdy, effective gate, but doesn't want to put holes in their wall. Another benefit is if you have molding at the bottom of the doorway or walls, this gate can accommodate for that - which many gates do not.
I have left this gate in place since I put it up 7 months ago, so I can't really speak to how well it holds up to being put up and taken down.
Customer Review: decent gate and not too expensive Summary: 4 Stars
we bought this to fit a 36 inch wide doorway. Its easy to assemble, although when you first start to put it up you think its never going to fit because you have to unscrew the positioning screws for a long time and then fiddle with them to get it level and square. Once you take the time to get it in correctly (there is a little red/green indicator to help with this), it works just fine. The catch requires a decent amount of strength to use with only one hand (I can do it with my right hand, but not easily with my left) so maybe not good for older people or an elementary school age child. No worse than any of the other safety stuff for parents (half of which I can't open!) You do have to be careful walking through it not to hit the sides (opening is plenty wide but feels narrow compared to a door) or trip over the crossbar at the bottom, although we've bumped into it plenty and it hasn't dislodged from its place in the doorway. I'm happy with this product and it saved me a lot of money over the others I was looking at that would have required me to buy an extra extension; the extension I needed came with it.
