We spent a lot of time running between stores buying and returning gates that did not work. It wasn't a question of price (though the cheaper ones were certainly more than subpar) we just wanted one that worked. Many of the gates we purchased said that they were wide enough for the space we had but they flimsy when stretched beyond a normal doorway width. Also, many of the gates with swinging doors had extensions to fit the doorway but one extension was always too small and two too big. The crosstown has a smooth sliding expandable frame that adjusts at the top and bottom. Also, it has tension mechanisms that fine-tune the fit at the top and bottom--if you have uneven molding or slanted walls, this is helpful. It is easy to take down several times a day and you can pack it and take it with you in its case. Awesome!! We also love that the gate is soft mesh so there are no injuries when my daughter rams her face into it repeatedly (hypothetically speaking). I will say it can be annoying when I have to lift my 4year old over it because it has no door, but the peace of mind and ease of use outweighs the minor annoyance. And, Amazon gave me a great price and it was at my doorstep the next day. Now I just need to return all the other craptastic gates I bought!!Customer Review: Evil Gate ruined my good mood

Yes, it fits the hallway. And it cost 35 bucks. That's where it earns two stars.
Other than that, this is an evil, evil gate. I just spent a good 20 minutes WITH the instructions, and still couldn't get the darn thing up right. 20 minutes having a minor panic attack trying to set up The Devil's Gate with a baby crawling all over me, mind you.
You have to push in 4 different buttons hidden by folds of fabric that sometimes decide they don't really want to be pushed, and there's some stupid knob thing that you have to twist (after you uncover it) while it's pressed against the floor. You have to adjust it JUST SO or start all over. Oh, did I mention the buttons have to be pushed in a certain order, OR YOU HAVE TO START ALL OVER? Yea, I'll stick with the $10 pressure gates with the archaic wood slat thingies, thankyouverymuch. I really wasn't planning on spending this much energy on a GATE this morning.
I'm sure if you have a lot of patience, no baby to corral, and plenty of time, you can figure this gate out easier than I. However, if you actually HAVE a baby, I recommend something a bit simpler.

Ordered this for the wide opening between my kitchen and living area. It's really sturdy and does the job. 19 month old hangs on it and runs into it and it doesn't budge. Putting it up was pretty easy once I figured out how it works... putting it away is a little harder though because the buttons you have to press to get the side bars to collapse are really stiff, which is good cause the kids can't do it then!
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. Great price for a great gate.
***UPDATE***
We have owned this gate for just over a year now and have not had problems until just now. The latching mechanism on the top bar of the gate has broken and now the top bar will not lock into place anymore. We have used and abused and love this gate for awhile so this made us a little sad. However, we called Evenflo and told them about our problem and they are replacing the gate for free, even though we purchased this a little more than a year ago! They had great customer service, and yes, I would purchase this gate again.

I LOVE this gate. We do not have kids but have friends that visit frequently that do. I wanted a gate that was stable and could be used in a variety of places without needing mounting hardware attached to the walls... THIS IS THE GATE! Like many reviewers, I struggled to understand how to mount the gate the first time, but after you've done it once and you understand which side to extend and how to release it, it's super easy. I'm 5'6" and have been able to walk over this while mounted on the stairs without trouble. The best part is you can mount this gate pretty much anywhere. The length gives you the option to mount it places that you can't with other gates, but also with the top and bottom being able to extend separately it allows you to mount it on places that are uneven. We extend it from the wall to the banister which is wide at the bottom and skinny at the top and it is very secure. I highly recommend this gate to anyone, and I've even given it as a gift because I love it so much.Customer Review: Does the job, but not easy to put up or take down

This gate is okay. I am not thrilled with it, but it does the job. It is difficult to lengthen and shorten the width when trying to fit it to your doorway. The release button is on the metal bar underneath the material and does not always work on the first try...you have to keep pushing it in all different ways hoping that it will finally release. It is a "clicking" mechanism (with each click it get longer or shorter in length). My doorway seems to be a width that is in the middle of one of these clicks, so I never get a really tight pressure grip on the door jam. My older kids when stepping over the gate are constantly knocking it down. I kept the gate because I really do not want a gate that I would have to drill holes in my nice door moulding and I like the fact that this gate can be folded up for travel. I am hoping that with a little more time, I'll get the feel for installing the gate, and the older kids will get better at stepping over it!
