Baby Products Reviews of Evenflo 3 Pack Classic Glass Bottle, 8-OunceCustomer Review: great bottles Summary: 4 Stars
i recently bought these for my 17 month old and baby on the way. i got them because of all the concerns with plastics these days. i have used many bottles including evenflo comfi, dr. browns, playtex drop-ins, nuby non-drip, avent, and soothie. these are by far the best and i can't believe i'm saying that because i used to be all about finding that perfect bottle to avoid gas and spitting up. yes, my daughter is no longer an infant, but these bottles work just fine with no annoying extra parts to wash or liners to buy.
heres what i especially love:
1) no plastic concerns (BPA, phthalates)
2) easy to clean and i feel i get them VERY clean (some plastic bottles feel like they have a residue in them after washing)
3) will accept any standard nipple to customize to your needs( i use nuby non-drip silicone nipples- great for when baby can hold own bottle- when they put it down/drop it/throw it, it will not drip and they are very inexpensive)
4) sturdy glass doesn't break or chip as easily as one might think- my husband dropped one of ours into the street off the top of our car by mistake, no chips or cracks at all
i am very pleased with these bottles- i just wish they had silicone nipples instead, but at least they'll accept nipples meant for other bottles so you can get the right nipple for your baby.
Customer Review: Nipples and dishwashing Summary: 4 Stars
It'll be a few months before we put these bottles to use but I wanted to clarify a point about replacing the nipples and dishwashing. These bottles represent the "old standard" so only the vented "original NUK" and Evenflo nipples will fit and presumably work well without collapsing. The current trend (Avent, Playtex natural, Gerber etc.) seems to involve wide mouth bottles and thus nipples with larger diameter rings. The difference, if you compare the older versus newer style nipples side by side should be fairly obvious. I only mention this here to clarify that options may be limited and to be careful if ordering nipples online.
Update: Last night, I washed the included latex nipples in the upper rack of the dishwasher and found that they came out discolored. Some websites will indicate that the nipples themselves are dishwasher safe. I think the discoloration indicates that some damage has occurred. I wasn't even using the high heat (sanitizing) option!
Oh well... good thing we intend to use these bottles primarily for the storage of expressed breast milk. I'm following other reviewers' suggestions to get the Sassy (MAM Assure Ultivent) BPA-free plastic bottles for trips outside the home and for supplemental feeding.
Customer Review: Great except for venting Summary: 4 Stars
I bought these after using Dr Brown's for six months with my baby who had reflux. The glass is healthier, cleaner and somehow more comforting. The nipples are horrible, I just threw them out. I then tried different combinations of nipples to find a way to vent the bottles:
-with Evenflo silicone nipples - don't vent, get vacuum when baby sucks and need to pull out every thirty seconds.
-with Dr Brown nipples and Evenflo collars - leak like crazy
-with Dr Brown nipples, Dr Brown venting system and Dr Brown collar - vent a little better (but still not well), no leakage
-with a mystery nipple labeled R (not sure where I got it) and Dr Brown venting system and Dr Brown collar - works like a charm. But I don't know the brand of the nipple (yellow, tall, with three ridges around the base).
With all the health risks posed by plastics, I wish Evenflo would just either test other brand nipples and venting systems and make some recommendations, or make a venting system for these beautiful bottles. Born Free is sold out right now of their glass vented bottles, plus they are $10 each.
Customer Review: Slippery glass surface allows for easy cleaning Summary: 5 Stars
My initial reason for purchasing these glass bottles for my second child was the large amount of time I spent scrubbing the breast milk that adhered to the inside of plastic bottles that I sent to daycare for my first child. With a second babe in tow, I was determined not to spend 15+ minutes each evening over the sink scrubbing plastic bottles clean since the dishwasher couldn't get the job done. I hoped the slippery surface of the glass bottles would allow for easier cleaning and I was right! Breast milk that has been bottled in glass bottles in the fridge or freezer rinses clean quickly as opposed to the plastic bottles, and the glass bottles can be popped in the dishwasher. I was also pleased to learn that important immunities contained in breast milk adhere to the inside of plastic bottles, so going with the glass bottles was a bonus.
As for concerns of breakage, my mother was a foster parent for infants for years using only the Evenflo glass bottles and never broke a one.
Lastly, I pay very close attention to plastic codes and it made me feel more comfortable using glass.
Customer Review: Not Nice Nipples Summary: 3 Stars
The bottles are nice & sturdy but as has been commented before, the nipples are shoddy. I breastfed for 11 months, supplementing with AVENT botles(which I was extremely happy with functionally but they have BPA) but I just switched to these because they're BPA-free. I would not recommend these to nursing mothers because the poorly shaped nipple is completely unnatural. These tiny, narrow nipples are unlike AVENT's nipples, which mimic a good nursing latch. We used a #2 AVENT nipple, which has a slow flow and caused my daughter to actively nurse from the bottle. These Evenflow slow nipples are so fast that they caused her to chug-a-lug quickly. At first she even choked. Medela nipples fit as an alternate but they are faster than AVENT as well and they're just the wrong shape. The seal on the Evenflow bottles are slightly leaky if you don't get the rings screwed on just right, which in my one-handed hurry I rarely seem to be able to do.
