Hi,
Our son turned 4 weeks old today; Two hours ago, he was also a split second away from suffering serious injury.
I persuaded my wife to purchase the new Ergo Sport and Baby Insert based on the excellent reviews the ergo carrier had received. I went ahead with the purchase even after trying this exact setup (sport with insert) on at a baby expo in Brisbane/Australia and thinking to myself how difficult/awkward it was to leverage. The reviews stated it was the best, and that was all that counted. We want the best for our boy, so we'll get used to it.
The instructions bundled with the infant insert leave a lot to be desired; only just now have we realized that the ergo baby website carries an instructional support video that shows two different variations to using the insert (the latter matching the pdf/printed documentation).
With much frustration in trying to leverage the ergo with insert without assistance from a second person, my wife turned to google and from there a link to youtube to watch a 5 star ratged video titled "How to use the Infant Insert of the Ergo Baby Carrier" by user "bellybeyondnz";
We followed these instructions blindly, assuming that this was the correct procedure. The video shows a women first laying a baby on to the insert, then wrapping it around him, and lifting the swaddled baby in to position inside a partially assembled carrier, and then raising shoulder straps etc. Note, the instructional video on the ergo website (first variation) leverages this style of approach where baby is first wrapped/swaddled and then inserted into carrier.
I'm 6'4 tall. To cut a horrible story short, standing with carrier semi assembled, I effectively dropped my son wrapped in the insert whilst awkwardly trying to put him in to the carrier; Through luck/reflexes, I managed to catch him about a foot from the ground. He still screamed like we have not heard before, and we hope no damage has been done.
Please, please, please try this device and insert out thoroughly at a store before purchasing and make your own mind up whether this setup is suitable for a new born. Don't accept reviews alone. Make sure if you do purchase, that you view the instructional video on the ergo website before use.
I'm sure once my son reaches 15 pounds and can use the ergo without need for the infant insert, this will be a great carrier. But i'm certainly not sold on the infant insert. I have doubts the ergo was ever designed with newborn in mind. Maybe it is because our son is quite tall (61 cm / 2 feet ?).
Update: My wife has since tried the Baby Bjorn (Baby Carrier Original) out on our son. Its feels more secure for the newborn, but leaves them sitting completely upright with neck essentially taking full load of the head weight. Our boy will not fall asleep in such a position - but will in a more side-style position of the ergo. We are going to persist with the ergo, but be extremely careful and do everything sitting down.
